AGM Report 2019

Yorkshire
County Athletics Association

Annual Report
2019

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

I write this just a few days since the CAU Cross Country Championships at Prestwold Hall, Loughbrough
where, yet again, our Yorkshire teams did us proud, coming home with plenty of medals both for teams and
individuals.

But it’s not only over the country that Yorkshire shine. Our Fell Runners, Road Runners and Track and Field
Athletes all play a part in keeping Yorkshire to the fore.

My thanks to those who provide encouragement to all our athletes, their parents, coaches, officials and the
members of the Executive Committee.

To all our Athletes may I wish you “all the best” for the next twelve months. Be proud to wear your Yorkshire
vest, be well, stay fit and deliver plenty of PBs.

Barbara Goodall

CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

2019/20 set off with a full programme for the year in all disciplines; track and field championship`s back at
Cudworth, senior inter counties at Manchester and juniors at Middlesbrough. Road championships at
various venues and the eversuccessful cross country at Lightwater valley and finished off with a brilliant
CAU meeting at Loughborough.

All successes results are noted in our annual report along with our financial status. The state of our
finances is and has been managed for many years by our ever faithful treasure Roger.

All our championships are put together along with managing team events with skill and personal attitude to
these events. Of course, Fiona Lancaster has a band of knowledgeable staff working with her; Gordon Agar
Terry Bailey, Dave Paver, Steve Gaines, Charlotte Slack and Anthony Bowyer who all are committee
members. All are watched over by our flag waving president Barbara Goodall. May I thank everyone who
has worked to promote Y.C.A.A

Our 2020/21 year starts with the most disserting news of events been cancelled venues closed gatherings
and crowds all been closed or banned people over seventy years of age asked to self-isolate we have
official`s in that age bracket

On that sad note may I wish everyone a good year of athletics when it starts.

Yorkshire Cross Country Championships

Saturday 5th January 2019 – Lightwater Valley, Ripon

Photo credits: Dave and Eileen Woodhead

The Cross-Country Championships were held at Lightwater Valley for the 7th year in succession. The team
at Lightwater Valley are consistently brilliant to work with. The facility itself provides plenty of parking and
easy access from the motorway, along with all the other facilities needed, to make a championship event
work efficiently for the athletes. We would hope to hold the Championships there for some time.
The course was planned by Dave Paver, Clerk of Course and Steve Gaines, Assistant Clerk of Course and
was suitably challenging for a Yorkshire County Championships. It continues to be popular with the athletes,
though it will always be assessed each year with changes made as they’re needed. We will continue to
endeavour to provide the best experience for athletes, spectators, officials and volunteers. Dave continues
to gather a fabulous team of volunteers who helped with setting up of the course, before the championships
and they all deserve huge thanks. We must continue to encourage volunteers to be part of the team in the
future, as it’s an enormous job setting up and dismantling the course.
We are indebted to our wonderful officials and volunteers who did an outstanding job all day, ensuring fair
play. When the weather is poor as it often is at a cross country, it would be easy to forget these amazing
people are out there braving the elements all day. Their efforts are very much appreciated.
The day itself is all about the athletes, they're who we plan for and they were outstanding, whether young or
old, experienced or new to the Yorkshire Championships. Huge congratulations to everyone who competed,
regardless of whether they medalled or not, there were some very brave performances. The benefit of
Lightwater Valley as a venue is the neutrality of the course for all athletes, with no home advantage for

anyone. Then the quality of the course set produces a competition of such a high quality that this ensures
that we take the best Yorkshire Team possible to the UK Intercounties.

Thank you so much to all involved!

UK CAU Cross Country County Championships

Saturday 9th March 2019 – Prestwold Hall, Loughbrough

Photo credits: Charlotte Slack, Hallamshire Harriers

This was the third time the UK CAU Cross Country was held at this venue, and conditions were extremely
trying, with very strong winds. It proved to be a challenging day for everyone, particularly for our Senior Ladies
who really weren’t happy with the new extended distance of their course. Our Senior Ladies team was full of
talented, experienced athletes, and while they did win, they said they found the conditions almost
overwhelming. It’s a matter that I raised on their behalf at the UK CAU board meeting, but I think it is unlikely
that they will revert to the original distance.
There was still an issue with the coach drop off area being too far away from the County tent area, although
it was better than the previous two years. This aside it was once again a really well organised event and our
athletes enjoyed it.
I’d really like to thank our brilliant team of officials, who ensured the Yorkshire team were correctly tagged,
numbered and in the right location at the right time. They were Gordon Agar, Maria Harrison, Susanne
Pickersgill, Barbara Croughan, Janette Tomlin, Nicola Francis, Anthony Bowyer, Helena Brown, Charlotte
Slack and Louise Slack. It’s a long tiring day for them, but they do an amazing job. More help to carry the
gear is always welcome though.
The Yorkshire athletes, continue to amaze me, they are always really supportive of each other and their
sportsmanship on and off the course was once again outstanding. They represented the county extremely

well. There were several team awards… Gold for the Under 17 Ladies, the Senior Ladies and Under 20
men… Silver for the Under 15 Boys and under 17 Men… The rest of the teams were well placed and there
were brilliant performances from every single athlete, ensuring that the Yorkshire Team were awarded the
Ken Rickhaus trophy for overall best team performance. They truly deserved this award, their effort was
immense..

Huge thanks as always for the fabulous support our athletes receive all year round from coaches, family and
friends, many of whom had travelled to support the team.

Yorkshire Road Relay Championships 2018

Saturday 30th March 2019 – The Brownlee Centre, Leeds

Photo Credits: Dave and Eileen Woodhead

We held the Road Relays at the Brownlee Centre for the second time and as venue it worked really
well for the relays and the road races. It provided a safe, totally enclosed road surface for the runners
and it was once again very popular with all the athletes.
We had excellent entry numbers in all age groups, with relays for all senior athletes and road races
for Under 17 and below.
We would like to establish the Road Relays as a regular event at the end of the Cross-Country
season, but finding a suitable venue is difficult. With parking once again being a major issue at the
Brownlee Centre, sadly It’s unlikely we can hold them there again unless some significant
improvements are made for access to parking.
Many thanks to all of the athletes for their brilliant performances, our officials and volunteers and all
of the coaches and family members for their usual brilliant support.

Yorkshire Track and Field Championships

11th and 12th May 2019 – Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Cudworth

Photo Credits: Damian Jackson and Jamie Bloem

We are so lucky to maintain the support of so many athletes and coaches, consequently the entry numbers
remain high across most events as does the standard of performances. Scott Lincoln of City of York AC
particularly excelled and managed to break the Senior Mens’ Shot Putt record with a throw of 19m. It was a
record that had stood since 1962 and was previously held by Arthur Rowe of DPW AC. Later that season
Scott went on to break 20m twice, finishing the season with a PB of 20.39m, and we’re really looking forward
to seeing what 2020 has in store for him. It’s great to see so many youngsters competing for the first time in
a championship alongside so many internationals like Scott, I think athletics is unique in being able to offer
that opportunity.
For events of 800m and above the selection for senior international competition is based purely on times as
they appear on the Powerof10, therefore middle distance and endurance athletes are encouraged to chase
down fast times behind a pacemaker. This is a real shame, and an issue which I think UKA needs to address,
as athletes competing internationally need to learn race craft as well as work on their speed. All athletes need
to experience championship racing whenever they can, and this should be encouraged as part of their
training… I’m not convinced that the current team GB selection policy or the excessive use of BMCs equips
athletes with the skills needed for major championships. Entry numbers for any distance of 800m and above
does suffer a little because of this.

As I said earlier though, the quality of performances across all age groups and events does remain high and
this enables us to select excellent Yorkshire Teams for the Northern Intercounties and the UK CAU Track
and Field Championships. Our athletes are always so proud to wear their Yorkshire vests.

The Yorkshire Track and Field Championships were held at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium for the 9th year in
succession. We’d like to thank Martin Prest, Pete Shaw and the team for all their hard work, the support from
the stadium staff was once again superb.

As always, our outstanding officials work tirelessly for the two long days of competition and always ensure
that everything goes smoothly for the athletes. We are extremely lucky to have the quality of officials we have.
We need to continue to encourage new people to become involved and work alongside them, so that they
can learn from the best. So, if any clubs have currently got officials going through courses at the moment or
in the future and have people who need experience, then please get in touch. Our officials are great to work
alongside and learn from and they’ll be made very welcome.

We will always strive to continue to improve for future events and learn. This is something that we’ll never
stop doing, because the experience for our athletes must be the best it can be. We are so lucky that the
Yorkshire Track and Field Championships continue to be to be well supported and we will never take that for
granted.

Thank you so much to everyone who took part, whether competing, officiating, watching or supporting.

Northern Inter-Counties Track and Field Championships

7th July 2019 – Middlesbrough

I'd just like to say a huge thank you to Northern Athletics and everyone involved in the organisation of the
Northern Intercounty Championships. It was once again superbly organised, and I think athletes from all
counties benefit hugely from this competition. All the hard-working officials worked tirelessly to ensure fair
play and to keep the competition moving smoothly. I know working out the results and team scores is
extremely difficult, but the work is appreciated by athletes and team managers.
This was an event in danger of being scrapped a few years ago, but under the new format it continues to
thrive. It’s an event for U15 and U17 athletes only, with a limited amount of track and field events available.
The events rotate on a yearly basis, but this ensures it is a tight, fast moving event with a high standard of
competition. The atmosphere is always brilliant, and it’s such a privilege to have the opportunity to be there.
We were once again able to field two athletes per event, with just one scoring. This system eases the
pressure on one young athlete to perform and consequently we always see some fantastic performances
from them all. There were some great performances from every county and although we won the overall
championship and therefore the Ken Oakley Trophy, it was a hard-fought competition such was the
standard of all athletes.
It continues to be a very worthy development event for the youngsters, and athletes of all counties wear their
county vests proudly. Our team of athletes was made up of some who have qualified before and some, who
made their Yorkshire debut. The support these young athletes give each other is just

outstanding, and I know many lifelong friendships are formed while part of this team. I believe confidence is
always enhanced in all the athletes.

While the faces within the team may change over the years, the pride in wearing the Yorkshire vests has
never changed or diminished... It’s always an absolute joy to witness this young team in action, it’s very
moving. Once again the members of the 2019 team were everything, we want a Yorkshire athlete to be...

Their performances were once again outstanding, wearing the Yorkshire vest definitely makes a difference
to them. I'm so proud of the sportsmanship and the good manners they all exhibited to the officials and fellow
competitors. They are totally inspiring, so I’d like to say thank you to each and every one of them!

Our athletes are looked after by so many dedicated, brilliant and talented coaches all year round, many of
whom had travelled to Middlesbrough to support the team, thank you! Of course, we must thank the parents
and family members, we know how demanding athletics is on family life and it is appreciated. It was an
absolute pleasure to share the day with all of them, thank you so much.

On a personal note I’d like to say thank you to Charlotte Slack, I will be forever indebted to her. Around the
time I was supposed to start contacting this team, my family suffered two major losses and I had to take some
time off. Without hesitation Charlotte stepped in at short notice and picked up the pieces brilliantly. Together
we took the team up to Middlesbrough, but she’d done most of the ‘legwork’ prior to me returning to my
desk…. She’s still a talented competing athlete, but she does a lot of volunteer work within athletics,

while training to be a nurse, completing master’s degree in nursing and working part time. She was a young
athlete in one of my first teams as team manager for Yorkshire many years ago. As you can see, she is still
doing Yorkshire proud, she’s an exceptional individual and a superb role model for our young athletes to look
up to. We’re very lucky to have her onboard and she’s continued to assist me with Yorkshire teams since.

UK CAU Track and Field Championships

22nd and 23rd July 2019 – Sportcity, Manchester

This was the 5th year in succession that this event was held in conjunction with the England Senior
Championship, but the 2nd time in Manchester and there was so much rain!
The atmosphere was once again a bit flat, but I think that is down to the size of the stadium. It will be going
back to Bedford in 2020. There was a lack of training for the England Athletics staff about the fact it’s an
Intercounty, and the official results certainly don’t reflect that it is an intercounty.
There was good information given to athletes this year prior to the event, and the athletes do continue to
benefit hugely from the quality of the competition. The entry system isn’t ideal, but I think we’re managing to
work it a bit better now, in that I chase the athletes to enter so that we can put the Yorkshire Team out that
we want. We can use reserves, but we can only use athletes who have entered the championships by the
deadline date and there often isn’t enough depth in the entries to replace an injured athlete. There is no
likelihood of this being changed, because realistically being part of the England Championship is the only
way this event can survive in its current format, as the UK CAU have dwindling funds. England Athletics
benefit greatly from team managers pushing and marketing the event, while trying to encourage county
athletes to enter.
As in previous years we had a mixture of U20 and Senior athletes, with newer members of the team
benefitting from the experience of the others. I don’t think we can ever underestimate the value of a
Yorkshire vest to our athletes, and we must remember that. Every single member of the Yorkshire team put

in a superb performance and they were incredibly supportive of each other. It was a huge privilege to see
the Yorkshire Athletes in action and it’s always such a joy to see them compete even in a windswept and
very wet Manchester! They always represent Yorkshire so well.

The Ladies team just missed out narrowly on winning the title for Division 1. Alicia Barrett (Hurdles) and
Jessica Mayho (Hammer) won gold, and Jasmine Nicholls (3k Walk) silver with Jemma Ibbotson (Discus)
and Laura Whittingham (Javelin) taking bronze.

The men’s team were the winners of Division 1, with gold medals going to Scott Lincoln (Shot Putt) and
Tommy Horton (Steeplechase), there was Silver for George Davies (Javelin) and Tom Partington (3k Walk),
while Reynold Banigo (Long Jump) and Tommy Horton (Mile) won bronze.

We really do appreciate all the hard work of all officials; we know it’s an exhausting couple of days for them.

As always huge thanks go to all the athletes, their coaches who do such a fabulous job all year and to all
their network of family and supporters. Without their continued commitment, we wouldn’t be able to put
such a brilliant Yorkshire team together.

Yorkshire Combined Events Championships
and

Open Combined Events Competition

24th and 25th August 2019, Dorothy Hyman Stadium, Cudworth

We had a good level of entries, and also took some late entries from the Hexham International Combined
Events, which was cancelled at the last minute. There was a good standard of performance across all age
groups, which ranged from Under 13 up to Seniors. It’s an event we love doing and we know the athletes
love competing in it… and they get so much from it.
The championships were held at the Dorothy Hyman Stadium and once again the team at the stadium were
superb, their efficiency with the equipment ensured that the event kept moving. Many thanks to Martin Prest,
Pete Shaw and the team, they work really hard on our behalf. We were very lucky with the weather too and
it does help a combined event competition. Many thanks to Sam Isaac who had the brainwave, to dash out
and buy iced lollies! They were very welcome as it was very hot, The competition in future will change slightly
in that it will be known as The Yorkshire Combined Events Open Competition incorporating the Yorkshire
Championships. All athletes will be eligible for medals in the Open and it will be run as one competition. The
top three athletes with Yorkshire qualification will also be eligible for county medals.
Once again, I can’t speak highly enough of our officials, they work so hard and to such a consistently high
standard, we’re always so grateful for their help. We do still need to encourage new officials to attend courses
so that we can welcome them to be part of Yorkshire team of officials. If you know of anyone who is planning
to qualify or has recently qualified, or anyone from outside of the Yorkshire boundaries who would be
interested in working at this or any of our events, then please put them in touch with me.
We’re so lucky to have super talented and a hard-working core of experienced officials working at Yorkshire
events, and there is a real opportunity for new officials to work alongside them and learn from them. We all
work hard at events but it’s also enjoyable, because we have such a great bunch of people involved, all would
be made very welcome! Fi Lancaster
