Healthy vs. Unhealthy Perfectionism

Perfectionism can enhance a child’s achievement and well-being or can be damaging to self-esteem and
success. Healthy perfectionism represents the characteristics that are positive for students, including
gaining a sense of pride from achievements and a drive for success. It is important to recognize the
differences between unhealthy and healthy perfectionism.

Healthy perfectionists are often more
concerned with obtaining mastery
of a given skill, while unhealthy
perfectionists are more concerned
with how they perform that skill.
Unhealthy perfectionism can impact
a student’s behavior and overall well-
being. Healthy perfectionists can be
classified by their motivation. They
form or develop personal standards
for effort and work, while unhealthy
perfectionist tends to base their
standards on evaluative concerns.

It is important for parents to encourage
children to move from unhealthy to
healthy types of perfectionism.
