was invited to join Seven Nations.

now known as Scotland, Ireland, Wales,

experience.
DS: I started as a step dancer first at seven. I have a
twin sister, Jennifer, that started dancing at four and she
started to travel and I stayed at home. I didn’t want to be
stuck mowing the grass at home so I decided take it up
myself. She was in a successful dance group called
“Double Take” that had grown to include two girls and two
guys. They were replacing one of the guys, so at twelve
years old I got my shot to step it up a notch. Through the
years, we competed all over Ontario and I ended up retiring
from the group around age nineteen. I had also danced
solo competitions and, as I grew older, I began to
concentrate on that more. I had always competed with
both the team and as a solo, but finally started to come into
my own around age seventeen, eighteen and nineteen,
whereas a lot of dancers I had danced with were quite
accomplished as young as twelve. I caught up eventually.
After the group, I competed mostly as a solo until about
1997 when I got involved more in shows and stuff like that.
As for fiddling, I started at ten and competed alongside
step dance categories at the same contests. They offer
fiddling categories as well. The main reason I got involved
in fiddling in the first place was because as a step dancer
you perform to fiddle music, so it seemed like a natural to
me. Not too many people were doing it at the time. I can
think of about three. So I kept up both and really enjoyed
it. Now, with the band I am on the performance side
instead of competition and I love it.

Fontana Clogging Jamboree
Feel Good Workshop Celebrates Third Year at Modern Clogging’s Birthplace
Take over 400 clogging enthusiasts, some of clogging’s best instructors, a jammin’
bluegrass band, then through in a slew of cowboy hats, bandanas and one blindfolded
cow and you have a recipe for one memorable weekend!
The third annual Fontana Clogging Jamboree was held September 23 and 24 at
Fontana Village Resort in the scenic Smoky Mountain of Western North Carolina.
In a time when some expect clogging workshops to be everything for everyone, the
Fontana Jamboree has found a following among dancers who enjoy dancing together
in one hall on hardwood floors to a mix of music and dance styles.
Instructors Scotty Bilz, Chip Summey, Matt Sexton and hosts Naomi Pyle and Jeff
Driggs led the dancers through a Friday evening and all day Saturday of workshops in
the historic main Recreation hall. A second dance room in the Inn featured Lou
Maiuri teaching traditional figures and a seminar on flatfooting. Linda Carolan of
Texas also taught in the Carolina
Room. Linda and her husband Rusty
had been instructors at the Smoky
Mountain Jamboree hosted by Bobbie
and Dewey Paul during the 1980’s and
returned to Fontana as guest teachers
this year.
Ahighlight of the workshop is the
front porch forum. During the lunch
break, everyone runs to their cabin or
to the grill to eat then comes back to
the front porch for a full hour of great
live acoustic bluegrass, sing-a-longs,
stories and freestyling. Workshop-

Draughon of Florida played and sang along with the
weekend’s guest band, the Cashers Flat Bluegrass Band
from Pennsylvania. Pat even played the handsaw, holding it
between her knees and bending it over and bowing it with a
fiddle bow.
Cashers Flat came back Saturday evening for a bluegrass
concert to open the fun dance. Accompanied by champion
fiddler Douglas Meek, the band brought down the house with
an amazing set of clogging tunes. The floor filled up when
the band struck up “Rocky Top.” For many, it was their first
experience dancing to a live band. Jeff and Lou Maiuri
joined the band on stage for a big circle Appalachian square
dance that featured a ball of yarn that took the dancers out of
the Rec. Hall and through the parking lot and back in through
the back door to the dance floor.
Afun game was the “Cow Chip Bingo” featuring Naomi as
Bessie. Folks bought a number and the cow walked
blindfolded through the “field” of numbers until it dropped it’s
chip, giving the closest number the proceeds. The winning
chip fell directly between 2 numbers and two lucky people
split over $250.00.
Next year’s Jamboree features special
guest Ira Bernstein, the percussive
dance legend. For more information,
visit the Fontana Jamboree’s website at

charming even when she belches.
The thing about clogging is, it’s not dancing in the sense
of holding a partner and dancing together. What I saw is
essentially an individual performance skill. There is nothing
wrong with that, but given the choice I’d rather have a
partner on the dance floor, if for no other reason it will
distract spectators from looking at me!
However, I’m not going to let myself feel particularly out
