Top attractions in Jersey
Three of Jersey’s ‘hidden gems’ have been awarded a place on a prestigious
list of Britain’s top attractions. The accolades for Hamptonne Country Life
Museum, Jersey Museum and La Hougue Bie came from Visit Britain.
Hamptonne and La Hougue Bie were both given the ‘Hidden Gem’
accolade, whereas Jersey Museum and Art Gallery nabbed the ‘Gold’ award.
World famous Celtic Coin Hoard
The massive hoard, which contains nearly
70,000 coins, was found in a field in
2012 by metal detectorists. The hoard
can be viewed around the island at a
special pop-up exhibition in parish
halls throughout the year. The
exhibition will feature at St Lawrence
Parish Hall in April, St Brelade Parish
Hall in May, Trinity Parish Hall in June,
St Saviour Parish Hall in July, St Ouen Parish
Hall in August and St Helier Town Hall in September. The rest of the
treasure trove, including ancient gold torques and gold and silver jewellery,
can be viewed at La Hougue Bie Museum throughout the year.

attraction for nature lovers as
Samarès Manor is part of an ancient feudal fief,
steeped in Jersey history. Vincent Obbard, whose
title of Seigneur de Samarès requires him to pay
homage to Her Majesty the Queen when she
visits the Island, explains how the manor got its
name: “Samarès is probably a derivation of
salsemaris, meaning salt marsh. In Norman times
they dammed the sea as it came up over the
dunes and extracted the salt, which has made the
area extremely fertile.”
Vincent, who has lived at the manor all his life
and runs the estate with his wife, Gillie, is also
very proud of his own family history. A guided
tour of the manor house is available Monday to
Saturday and among the treasures on display are
the sea chest and Trafalgar medal of one of
Vincent’s ancestors, Lieutenant John Chrystie.

Lovely Lavender EnjOy jErSEy 2019/2020 29
In the summer months, the Jersey Lavender
Farm has to be one of the most alluringly
fragrant and picturesque attractions on the
Island. From mid-May to late July the lavender
is in bloom and makes for a spectacular sight.
But while soaking up the beauty of the
glorious lavender, it should not be forgotten
that it is also a crop that needs to be
harvested and processed at the right time to
obtain the precious lavender oil that is used in
the range of Jersey Lavender products.
During harvest time there's the unique opportunity to learn about the
processing of the lavender and other herbs. From 4th June to 25th August
2019 there is a talk in the distillery every day at 11.30am and 3pm,
explaining how the pure essential oil is steam-distilled from the lavender
flowers and how it is then transformed into Jersey Lavender's range of
home and body products.
The farm itself is perfect for a peaceful stroll – around the herb gardens,
through shady woods and along the nature-friendly pathways that surround
the nine acres of lavender. There is even a 'Discovery Trail' to follow, which
is great fun for children and adults alike, and feeding the many chickens and
doves is not to be missed! At Sprigs Café, the farm offers delicious
homemade breakfasts, light lunches and traditional afternoon teas. You can
even sit out on the café veranda and enjoy the view of the tranquil garden
scenery. In the Sprigs shop you can find that perfect gift of ‘Lavender Farm
magic’ to take away with you. You can also top up from home as the
products are available from the website, jerseylavender.co.uk

Inside story
At Liberty Wharf you'll find a range of independent
retailers going above and beyond
Liberty Wharf is a popular, covered shopping arcade located in St Helier, houses for visitors to

Taken over by SandpiperCI last year, Liberty Wharf has an eclectic range The arcade has a mix of
of local, boutique shops, high street retailers, restaurants and coffee franchises, which include George,
M&S Food, Costa Coffee, Hotel Chocolat and Laura Ashley. It will also
include the IQ Apple Store from mid-summer.
Equally important are the independent stores located here, which
include Rococo Art and Gifts, Eclectic Ladies Boutique, and Little Star.
Little Star is a baby and nursery specialist offering clothes and equipment
from top brands including Stokke, Bugaboo, Snuzpod and Sleepyhead. It
occupies a fabulous space which retains the building’s old granite walls and
original beams.
Unlike other UK traders, Jersey’s independent retailers are fortunate that
there are no vast out-of-town retail centres drawing shoppers away from the
high street. This means that these smaller Jersey retailers can thrive, though it
is clear that they are a dedicated bunch: “You have to work really hard to stay
ahead,” says Little Star’s Lara Rogers.
“Having my own shop means I can
listen to my customers and provide the
service I know they want.”

There’s a lot more to running an independent store than simply selling
clothes, says Lara: “It’s about investing in your customers long-term,
sharing your knowledge, letting them ask questions and see and touch the
products, gaining their trust, and allowing them to go home and have a

In other words, everything you miss out on with online shopping.
