DEEPAVALI

The word “Deepavali” is a
combination of the words "Dipa" and

"Gavali", the first of which means
'light' and the latter means 'in a row'
or also known as diwali, is a festival of
lights celebrated by those of Hindu
faith and is a holiday in malaysia. It is

celebrated on the 14th day of the
month of alpasi in the tamil calendar

between october and november.
People celebrate Deepavali as a
festival representing the beginning
and the victory of good over evil, thus
having light as the celebration’s
central symbol. It means the light that

took over the dark.

Deepavali is one
of the most
important

festivals of the
year to celebrate

by performing
traditional
customs at
homes.

WHY
CELEBRATE
DEEPAVALI

The reason celebrate Deepavali is
because as the majority of the Hindus

are Tamils in Malaysia.
It follows the south indian pattern of

Deepavali, where it celebrates the
festival as the day when Lord Krishna

defeated and killed the tyrant ruler
Narakasura who had kept torturing
his patrons since long. The villagers
then celebrated the victory of the
Goodness of defeating Evil by turning

on the lights and partying.

HOW THEY
CELEBRATE
DEEPAVALI

There are several Deepavali customs.
On Deepavali, or Diwali, families would
get up early in the morning to take an

oil bath, symbolic of cleaning and
purifying one’s body and mind. They
would then perform prayers at home

or worship in the temple.
It is also a day of feasting. Family and
friends gather for delicious food such
as thosai, chicken curry and tradisional

delicacies like muruku, laddu,
momapodi, palkova and ghee balls.

On the eve of the Deepavali festival, a
lamp-laying ceremony was performed

that was accompanied by the whole
family. They're going to put on "vilak"

lights. The "vilakku" lamp is a
traditional lamp made of clay. The
Deepavali festival will also be more
lively with the availability of modern
lights. Hindus believe in the God of

wealth and prosperity, goddess
Laksmi, who will come to visit their
home at that time. Preparations for the
installation of the lamp were made to
welcome the arrival of goddess Laksmi.

Hindus will decorate their homes with a "kolam" or
"rangoli" which is a floor decoration made of rice dyed
before the sun's order. Usually this "kolam" is made on
the doorstep as a sign of safety and grace so that every

household gets well - being.
This skill of making a "kolam" which means ‘pool’ it is
usually inherited by generations. Although it may seem
difficult, Hindus can make it beautifully, uniquely and
attractive that is mostly plant-motivated. This ceremony
is very meaningful because this celebration is not only
celebrated by Hindus but also other human beings in

the world.
