someone who asked the Prophet, ‘O Messenger of Allah, what practice is most loved by
Allah?’ He replied: ‘Al hal wal murtahal’ This man asked ‘What is al hal wal murtahal, O
Messenger of Allah? “He replied: ‘that is reading the Quran from beginning to end. Every
time he repeated it again from the beginning” (H. R. Tirmidhi).24
The management of the ODOJ program in the period of 2014-2017 is to implement
the routine ODOJ program (One Day One Juz), ODALF (One Day Half Juz), ODOL
(One Day One Sheet); ODOJ has been socialized through social media program with the
International targets; changed into Mobile Apps ODOJ and Websistem; multiplied by
ODOJ group at school/college/office; ODOJ Palestine Care (Cooperation with KNRP);
SAN (Spread Quran Nusantara), Cooperation with PKPU; the nurseries of 100 Quran
memorizers; and ODOJ Qurban (Cooperating With ACT).25
Terms to become a Member ODOJ are Muslims; having the facility of Mobile
Applications or WhatsApp or BlackBerry Messenger; a commitment to read the Koran
one juz per day; and are willing to follow and respect the rules of the Community One Day
One Juz.26
Especially for groups that have been running previously or who want to directly
register one new group which consists of 30 participants (1 group) from friends recitals,
office friends, tahsin institutions, campuses and school friends (organizations), informal
gatherings and others, the requirement has prepared 30 candidates odojers (directly
processed numbering). For the number of under 30 participants, its rest will be helped by
ODOJ management and that group will be ready to follow the mechanisms in ODOJ.27
WHATSAPP AS A CONTEMPORARY MEDIA IN ODOJ
Communication technology is a hardware equipment, an organizational structure, and social
values w ith which individuals can collect, process and exchange information with other
individuals. The impact of communication technology, namely the change in individual
behavior that includes his/her knowledge, attitudes, or actions occurs as a result of the
delivery of communication messages.28
The function of high tech communication media is to create the efficiency of the
dissemination of information; strengthen the existence of the information; educate/direct/
persuade; amuse/entertain; social control.29 The development of communications technology
has resulted in many innovations to facilitate the process of human communication to
become more effective.
The rapid development of communication technology today is caused by several
things: first, communication technologies can potentially reach all people in all of the
world fast. Second, the number of messages and traffic flow information has multiplied
geometrically. Third, the complexity of the technology itself is increasingly sophisticated,
both its software as well as the rigors of its device (hardware).30

Muslims need to take advantage of communications technology, because basically
all of the utility of the communication media will be able to easily influence people. This
means that the consequences of personal and social media can shape and drive human
relations and human actions.31
One of the innovations that simplifies the process of communication is mobile phone.
The potential of mobile phones is to provide access to information and knowledge and a
record that can provide new ways for people who are geographically separated to form a
community based on the same interest, to communicate, and to make their voices heard. It
has been widely recognized, particularly in developing countries where their community
media position is as a means of giving information, analyzing, and allowing them to
understand their world and their role in the environment.32
The emergence of the smartphone is an example of the sophistication of mobile
phone technology. From the various types of smartphones, many of them offer advanced
applications features such as instant messenger service application that is “WhatsApp
Messenger”.
WhatsApp Messenger is a cross platform mobile messaging app which allows users
to exchange messages without having to pay for SMS. WhatsApp Messenger is available
for iPhone, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, Android and Nokia. All these phones can send
messages to one another. This is possible because WhatsApp Messenger uses Internet data
packets which are used to send emails and surf the internet, so sending messages and
keeping in touch with other people will not be charged. In addition to the basic features
of messaging, WhatsApp users can create groups, exchange pictures, video and audio
messages in unlimited quantities.33
Those media not only broadcast a reminder to people to recitate Qur’an but also
share islamic knowledge such as shirah, tafsir, and islamic motivation speech. Admins
or even member of ODOJ group sometimes share their idea or interesting articles in their
groups. Group chat also sometimes gives opportunity for its members to chat each other in
their group, ask each conditions or respond the posts.
Odojers then transfer those knowledge to others in their friendship and network
whether they are odojers or not. It is because what they share are not only read by odojers,
but sometimes those posts are reposted again to other groups.
WhatsApp tends to be used to form social relationships. Whatsapp application can
also be used as a means of interpersonal communication between the user and other users.
If one wants to use Whatsapp in a private context, then the user can store the phone numbers
of other users so that users can connect to each other.
How whatsapp can play as a media ini ODOJ can be explained by this mechanism.
One group consisted of 30 people of ODOJ members and or an Admin. Admin’s duty is
to inform the division of Juz every day, to recap the report of Juz every day, every week
and every month in one of their Group. Every member and admin have to have whatsapp
aplication in their mobile phone. If they do not have it, it can slow down their goal to
khatam 30 juz in a day. It can reduce their motivation too because they do not know other
progress.

All members of the group must complete one juz recitation per day in accordance with
the division of Juz by the Admin. Recitation time starts at the time that they have agreed
before, for example in ODOJ 815 is at 03.00 p.m.34 Whatsapp aplication help member and
admin to control the time because there is a time notification facility.
Members who are unable to complete one juz recitation of the day, are able to offer
his/her part of the Juz (the remaining verses unread) to other members through his WA
groups, a maximum of 3 hours before the deadline for the daily recitations. For participants
who are unable to complete her recitation because of menstruation, puerperal etc. can offer
its Juz (Auction Juz) to other members. The program is called Auction offers Juz. This is
one of the whatsapp function, to sell in auction internally in ODOJ group.
Members who have completed one Juz in his/her recitations, directly report it to
the Admin via its ODOJ Group, by writing: his/her name, Juz, word ‘Finish’. The report
usually uses whatsapp icons or symbols. Whatsapp has various icons or symbols that can
represent anything. Moreover, those icons become the reward to appreciate members who
can kholas (finish) recitating their juz.
All the members give each other motivation to continue their zeal in finishing
recitations of their juz per day. The use of funny icons can motivate other members who
have not finished yet in recitating their juz.
After completing all juz of recitations, the admin and the member read the du’a of
Khatam Quran. Whatsapp also has application in arabic script for the praying.
One of the interesting tips from ODOJ 815 is to give ratings for ODOJ members
based on their time in finishing reading one juz, by giving star icon, from five to one with
emoticons WA with the following provisions. Five stars for members who can complete
one Juz between 03.00 p.m. - 08.59 p.m.; four stars for members who can complete one Juz
between the hours of 09.00 p.m. - 02.59 a.m; three stars for members who can complete
one Juz between the hours of 03.00 a.m. – 08.59 a.m ; two stars for members who can
complete one Juz between the hours of 09.00 a.m. – 02.59 p.m.; one star for members who
can complete one Juz for auction.
The example of the ilustration for whatsapp in ODOJ can be seen from this pictures.

Picture 1. shows the apperance of whatsapp report recap.35 It shows the number
of juz in sequence, member’s name and icons that symbolize the status whether one is
kholas (finish) in tilawah (reciting) or still in progress; murotal/tasmi’ (hear the reciting);
tarjim (read the transliteration); udzur syar’i because of having menstruation; finishing the
auction; or having not finished. This appearance usually comes from admin whatsapp. But
sometimes there are members who also help admin to recap the report.
In ODOJ 55, the icon to symbolize kholas (finish) in tilawah (reciting) is red flower.
While the icon to symbolize finishing the auction is right arrow.

The power of whatsapp actually becomes one of the contemporary media in
transfering islamic knowledge in Indonesia. Whatsapp is almost rare loosing its signal
and nowadays, almost every one who has smartphone has a whatsapp account. Islamic
knowledge which are transfered through whatsapp in ODOJ activities are about spirit and
discipline of worship especially reciting Quran. Whatsapp is a contemporary media of
facilitating fastabiqul khoirot (competing in goodness).
ODOJ and the use of whatsapp are forms of creativity in religion. Creativity in religion
is necessary in order to avoid a freezing process in diversity. If the freeze persists then the
contradiction between religious doctrine and social reality, science, and technology are
always changing unavoidable.40
CONCLUSION
The summary of this research is to define ODOJ and the contemporary media that is used
in ODOJ along with its methods to become the power of transferring islamic knowledge in
Indonesia. ODOJ or One Day One Juz movement is a form of creativity in dakwah which
calls on Muslims to get closer to the Quran. This is a form of dakwah inovation.
One of media that made ODOJ become larger nationally and internationally is the use
of whatsapp as a mobile phone application. ODOJ management and odojers use whatsapp
to form group, to remind, dan to report each other progress in reciting Quran. They also
share their thought, ideas, shirah, hadits, and motivation stories in Islam towards whatsapp
aplication.
Further research about the using of contemporary media in dakwah activities
(whatsapp in ODOJ) from another perspectives and methods are needed to develop theories
about media and Dakwah. It is not only in structural and fungtional perspectives but also
in critical ways.
