Attendance (NPSLBA)

Introduction to the programme

The NPSLBA is based on a model of effective learning which follows five stages:
• Acquisition of knowledge
• Modelling of good practice
• Practice application
• Feedback and reflection
• Embedding the experience

Key features of the programme
Emphasis is on exploring the relationship between theory – considered in the study
days and cluster sessions – and practice – carried out in the work based activities.
This process has proved to be a significant factor in driving change. To achieve

impact, the support of colleagues in the workplace is crucial, but the best practice
always includes the following elements:

• An understanding of the main benefits of the programme by the host
organisation.
• Dialogue between participant and line manager or senior colleague to
agree workplace activities.
• Time to attend the study days, undertake cluster group work and work
place activities.

NPSLBA study topics

Participants can download zipped resources that will support them in delivering
cluster sessions. The study topics, numbered 1 to 28, are grouped under the
following themes:

Whole school ethos

These topics cover work that will support the development of a positive school ethos
that meets the needs of all pupils through developing a vision for behaviour and
attendance. Developing opportunities for learning social and emotional skills
promotes good behaviour and full attendance:

• 4 Strategies to secure good behaviour and improve attendance

Leadership and management

These topics cover the role of senior leaders in improving behaviour and attendance

Engagement of learners

These topics consider how transfer and transition impacts on behaviour and
attendance and involve strategies that include peer support and counselling skills.
They will give you the opportunity to apply learning theories to your practice:

• 10 Underlying causes of challenging behaviour and poor attendance
• 11 Addressing the causes of poor attendance
• 12 The impact of transfers and transitions
• 13 Using counselling skills with staff, pupils, parents and carers
• 14 The impact of peer support on behaviour and attendance
• 15 Applying learning theories to behaviour and attendance practice

Meeting the individual needs of learners

These topics are to support participants working in settings with pupils who have
behavioural, emotional or social difficulties (BESD). They will support the
development of peer support systems and effective partnership working. There are
also opportunities to develop approaches for working with parents and carers:

• 16 Establishing peer support systems for staff in settings that include
children with BESD
• 17 Partnership working in settings that include children with BESD
• 18 Developing approaches to working with parents and carers in settings
that include children with BESD
• 19 Supporting BESD provision through collaborative working

Working in partnership

These topics support participants looking at how the school works as a part of the
wider community including working with parents and carers. There is also an
opportunity to look at how effective alternative provision can positively impact on
pupils' outcomes:

• 25 Supporting the needs of all young people

Preventing violent incidents

These topics will help participants to consider restorative approaches to reduce the
risk of violent incidents as well as learning from them:
