QUESTION, PERSUADE, REFER TRAINING RECENTLY OFFERED
Brookings Area United Way recently hosted a 1-hour, Question, Persuade, & Refer (QPR) training that teaches people three sim- ple steps anyone can learn to save a life. We had 12 participants from local businesses, nonprofits, city officials, and churches.
“Through one QPR training, we now have 12 more individuals in the community better equipped to approach mental health and suicide. As we begin recognizing the struggles in our community, trainings like QPR can have a big impact,” said Heidi Gullickson, Executive Director of Brookings Area United Way.
QPR is intended for people and organizations that make up the fabric of a community. Professionals who regularly interact with people such as police officers, nurses, human resource directors, primary care workers, school/college leadership, faith communi- ties, and friends and family of individuals with mental illness or addiction, and community members are encouraged to attend.
If you are interested in hosting a training for your business or organization, please visit: https://brookingsunitedway.org/mental-health-training/
If you have questions, please contact Heidi Gullickson, Brookings Area United Way, at [email protected] or 692-4979.

UNDERSTANDING ADVERSE CHILDHOOD EXPERIENCES:
BUILDINGSELF-HEALINGCOMMUNITIES
An Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) training will be held on April 11th from noon to 1 PM at the 1921 Building in Brook- ings in their 2nd floor community room. This event is in person and attendees can bring their own lunch.
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) are the most powerful determinant of the public’s health. ACEs are common - in fact, they are widespread, but they do not have to define an individ- ual’s future or potential. Understanding ACEs, their impact, and how to build hope and resiliency can aid in establishing a trauma-informed and self-healing community.
April is Child Abuse Prevention Awareness month, the Center for the Prevention of Childhood Maltreatment is hosting a com- petition throughout counties in South Dakota to increase the number of residents that have been educated in understanding in ACEs. There are other opportunities to learn about and par- ticipate in for April and they can be found on our website: https://brookingsunitedway.org/get-involved/#calendar
The trainers for this event: Dana Martens, MSW, CSW-PIP, Brookings School District Social Worker; Ali Teesdale, BCYMP Executive Director; Curstie Konold, MPH, MSW Intern; and Nikki Eining, CSW-PIP, QMHP Outpatient Mental Health Therapist.
United Way Worldwide is the leadership and support organization for the network of nearly 1,800 community-based United Ways. It ad- vances the common good, creating opportunities for a better life for all, by focusing on education, income and health. For more information about United Way, please visit: www.brookingsunitedway.org or contact Heidi Gullickson. Email to [email protected] or call 605-692-4979.

God wants each of us to be transformed – “And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God” (Romans 12:1-2). “Transformed” in the Greek language is meta- morphow is transliterated into English as metamorphosis. An example of this is when a caterpillar spins a cocoon and emerges as a butter- fly/moth. It is the same life/being but totally different creature. This transformation is not instantaneous, but a slow process. Unlike the but- terfly, humans have a choice whether to submit to God and be trans- formed. Transformation is voluntary – no one can decide whether you will be transformed. How does radical transformation begin, i.e., being de-conformed from the world into the “perfect will of God?” God’s will is that each person adopts the character of Jesus – “... the stature of the fullness of Christ” (Eph 4:13). That is one tall order. How does that begin?
Mark’s account of the good news for mankind opens with Jesus be- ginning His ministry in Galilee. Jesus' inaugural speech serves as a statement of the reason He came to earth. He began by declaring – “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). His commands must have shaken His coun- trymen to the core. Repent and believe – a two-step process. In that day, repent had a very general meaning and was commonly used in the world. It meant “to turn,”i.e, to turn from one thing or way to another. So what did Jesus mean? Repent of what? His audience was Jews, God’s chosen nation.
Mark’s account is brief, but Matthew’s and Luke’s reveal the reason. John the baptizer was on the scene six months before Jesus, declaring baptism for repentance for the remission of sins (Mk 1:4). Although the Jews were accustomed to their ablutions before entering the temple, John's message was new. He commanded people to “bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abra- ham as our father’” (Lk 3:8). Why did Jews appeal as descendants of Abraham? They thought that heritage put them in fellowship with God. Now, Jesus (Mk 1:15) said they had to turn from that to something else? What was it?

Why I'm Running
Since May 2017 I have had the privilege of serving the Brookings community as a member of the City Council, and I would love the opportunity to continue in that role. Brookings is my home, and I love being engaged in my community. I believe that Brookings is the best place in South Dakota, and I want to help make it the leading example which all other communities in our state strive to match. My husband Tim and I are excited to grow our roots here with our children Lily, Ella, and Teddy.
