The Salvation Army Makes It Easier to Give
“Kettle Pay” Offers Digital Donation Capabilities at Red Kettles through Google Pay, Apple Pay
More shoppers are carrying less cash these days, and it poses a chal- lenge to The Salvation Army, which funds much of its yearly budget through The Red Kettle Campaign.
Now, The Salvation Army is making it easier than ever to give with “Kettle Pay,” which accepts Apple Pay or Google Pay. The holiday sea- son’s iconic Red Kettles now feature stickers that allow you to donate almost as easily as dropping cash in the Kettle.
The Salvation Army has placed smart chips and QR codes on Red Ket- tle signs across the state, allowing donors to simply “bump” or scan their phones to make a digital donation. Donors will be directed to a custom donation page that accepts Apple or Google payment options. The funds will then be distributed to local Salvation Army units based on the donor’s billing ZIP code, and an email receipt will be sent di- rectly to their phone. Donors with an Apple iPhone Xs, Xr, and Xs Max or Android phones made since 2012 can just bump their phones on the sign. Donors with older phones can scan the QR codes.
“For nearly 155 years, The Salvation Army has employed creative, for- ward thinking to find solutions. More consumers are using their phones to pay for everyday items and Kettle Pay makes it even easier for donors to join The Salvation Army’s Fight for Good. Anyone can fight for our neighbors who are experiencing poverty by donating to Salvation Army programs, including food for the hungry, shelter for the homeless, and Christmas assistance for families in need,” said Major Ivan Rock, Commander of The Salvation Army’s Empire State Division.
Now in its 129th year, The Salvation Army’s Red Kettle Campaign is one of the oldest and largest charitable campaigns in the world. Every year, the campaign raises millions of dollars to provide toys for kids at Christmas, clothes and shelter for the homeless, food for the hungry, after-school programs for kids, and other services to America’s most vulnerable populations year-round.
Donations are accepted at any of the thousands of traditional Red Kettles found on street corners and in front of stores across the state.

PARENT & GUARDIAN SYMPOSIUM SCHEDULED IN BROOKINGS
The public is invited to attend the Parent & Guardian Symposium on De- cember 5th in Bell Auditorium at the Brookings High School. The evening will focus on pitfalls that can impact our local teenagers. The event will start with local resources being available for questions and information during the resource fair from 6:00 – 6:30 pm. Speakers will begin at 6:30 and are scheduled for a half hour on each topic. Topic include Vaping presented by the School Resource Office, Social Media presented by School Counselors and Sleep Needs presented by Dr. Matt Bien, MD.
"It is easier to say "NO" to classmates that you are not familiar with than it is when several of your friends suggest that you should try something. Vaping became easily available and did not seem harmful at first to most teenagers. Many high schoolers have said that it is no big deal. With new research coming out, it does seem to be a big deal. We want to add to the conversation that is happening around the state so that Brookings parents are not behind the other towns on this topic.
We also want to continue the conversation on social media use. Each year there are new apps that become the popular ones for teens. We want to inform the public about current apps, how teens hide them on their devices, and how they make a second account in apps that parents don't know about.
We are also concerned about the sleep patterns of local teens. They are having a difficult time shutting things down at night and getting proper rest. The time teens fall asleep has gotten later and later. And the sleep is often interrupted by continual device pinging throughout the night.
“Hopefully the evening will guide families into healthy conversations and assist with setting boundaries for a positive plan in decision making." shares Chad Adamson, Mickelson Middle School Counselor.
This event is sponsored by Brookings School District and Social Net Works. Social Net Works is a collaborative group whose mission is build- ing resilient children and families and more information can be found on Facebook. For more information, please contact Michelle Vande Weerd at 605-696-4714.

Idea Adviser Helps SDSU Community Advance Business Ideas
New Program Implemented onCampus This Fall
A new program created by Brookings Economic Development Corpo- ration (BEDC) seeks to promote and encourage entrepreneurship in the Brookings region by providing 1:1 free, customized coaching for South Dakota State University (SDSU) students, faculty and staff pur- suing potential business concepts.
The Idea Adviser program invites anyone with a business idea to stop in and meet with Jennifer Quail, BEDC’s Director of Entrepreneur Support and certified entrepreneur coach. In addition to helping inno- vators and entrepreneurs explore and evaluate the viability of their ideas, Quail connects them to the start-up resources available in the Brookings region that will move those ideas forward into business op- portunities.
An integral component of the program includes dedicated office hours for Quail on campus, made possible through a unique collaboration be- tween the university and BEDC.
“SDSU leaders understand and appreciate the importance of helping innovators and entrepreneurs discover, define and pursue their busi- ness ideas,” said Quail. “BEDC is so thankful to have the opportunity to bring the Idea Adviser program directly to the campus community.”
While students and staff are encouraged to stop in any Tuesday to Quail’s office, located in room 259 in the Student Union, entrepre- neurs from SDSU and the community can reach out to Quail any day of the week to learn more about the Idea Adviser program or schedule a free consultation. She can be reached by phone at 605-697-8103 or through email to [email protected]
“Programs like the Idea Adviser seek to leverage our area’s assets in pursuit of new opportunities for economic growth and development in the region,” said Quail. “I am looking forward to working with the SDSU community to see what the next big idea will be.”
BEDC is part of the Brookings Start-up Hub, local organizations sup- porting ideas, innovation and entrepreneurship in the Brookings re- gion. Visit startupbrookings.com for more information.

The Brookings Public Arts Commission, in partnership with the City of Brookings, SD, seeks an artist to design, fabricate and install 2D art- work in a public area of the shared use City/County building.

The selected artist will receive a commission of $10,000 (that shall in- clude all South Dakota State Sales/Use Tax), to design, fabricate, and install the artwork. The $10,000 budget also shall include any associ- ated travel costs.
Proposals must be submitted through the Café website: www.callforentry.org Before submitting a proposal, artists must set up a free Café profile if they have not already done so. To find more details about the call, sort by state and choose “South Dakota” on the Café website or visit: https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=7202

been bought by nuns who had left the Catholic Church. One nun even left the order to become a lesbian activist. Another wrote“Lesbian Nuns: Break- ing the Silence.” Other orders of priests and nuns experimented with en- counter group therapy resulting in a mass exodus from the Catholic church. Rogers (evangelical) and Coulson(Catholic) mistakenly assumed people had the same absolute standard of moral reference and would appeal to it in their decisions. Coulson wrote “Maslow saw that we failed to understand the re- ality of evil inhuman life. What we implied (via encounter groups, jm) was people could trust their own evil impulses, that they weren’t really evil.”

In 1964 Rogers’ own daughter finished her masters degree in psychology under Maslow and wanted tobe in an encounter group. Coulson related what she wrote in her diary. “She felt she had hidden her true self behind a ‘mask called wife and mother.’ In coming out from the deep shade of that tree, she was moving toward what Maslow advocated – she was becoming a self ac- tualized person. To prove it she walked out on her husband and three ba- bies.” Later she wrote a book about her experiences of this process entitled “Emerging Woman” (Natalie Rogers, 1982).

Almost 15 years later, after their first encounter group experiment in 1981 and observing his daughter,Rogers bemoaned, “I hope Rogerian counseling goes down the drain.” For over 25 years, Coulson, a man of biblical con- science, warned anyone in the USA who would listen to his speech, “Amer- ican Education:What went Wrong?” More on Humanism’s impact – next!

This land is located in Eastern Roberts County, SD and this auction presents the opportunity to purchase a desirable parcel of contiguous grassland containing approx. +/- 279.50 deeded acres; also presently there is also an adjacent 40 acre parcel of grassland that is leased from the BIA - with the deeded and leased acres this property has been operated as a +/- 319.50 acre grazing unit. This is a well located parcel of land located within 1⁄2 mile of Lohre Rd. and is bordered by township gravel roads and is within 11 miles of the Summit Exit on I-29 and is uniquely situated be- tween Owl Lake and Hurricane Lake, which affords some hunting opportunities for deer and waterfowl. This is a well-managed tract of unpunished grassland that is cross fenced to ac- commodate a rotational grazing program allowing for best management of the grass and a heightened carrying capacity. Perimeter and cross fencing is comprised primarily of a mixture of 4 and 5 barbed wire fencing. Livestock water is provided by dugouts, seasonal waterways and Owl Lake that loops into the Northwest portion of the property. All of this property is sub- ject to perpetual US Fish & Wildlife Waterfowl Easements. RE taxes payable in 2019 were $1,356.42. Pastures with all of the attributes found in this property are uncommon, as this pastureland is in “turn in ready condition” for the 2020 grazing season.
