MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING
TO BE HELD IN BROOKINGS
Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experienc- ing a mental health crisis such as contemplating suicide. This is an evi- dence-based program widely used throughout the United States.
The goal of training is to help support an individual until appropriate pro- fessional help arrives. Mental Health First Aiders learn a strategy that in- cludes: assessing risk, respectfully listening to and supporting the individual in crisis, identifying appropriate professional help and other supports.
Participants are introduced to risk factors and warning signs for mental health or substance use problems, will engage in experiential activities that build understanding of the impact of illness on individuals and families, and will learn about evidence-supported treatment and self-help strategies.
Mental Health First Aid is intended for people and organizations that make up the fabric of a community. Professionals who regularly interact with people such as police officers, nurses, human resource directors, primary care workers, school/college leadership, faith communities, and friends and family of individuals with mental illness or addiction, and com- munity members are encouraged to attend.
A Youth Mental Health First Aid course will be held on November 19th from 8:00AM – 5:00PM at Dakota Prairie Elementary School. Contact Michelle Vandeweerd, Brookings School District, at michelle.van [email protected] or 696-4714 for more information or to register.
An Adult Mental Health First Aid course will be held on December 5th from 8:00AM – 5:00PM at Research Park at SDSU. Contact Heidi Gullickson, Brookings Area United Way, at heidi@brookingsunitedway. org or 692-4979 for more information or to register.

Our own disposition to sin made it easier to accept Secular Humanism as the normal lifestyle and thereby erode the culture and biblical virtues of a Godfearing nation. Everyone has several major stumbling blocks – our own pride and its handmaiden selfishness. This is historically so: (1) We do what we want to satisfy ourselves (Judges 21:25; Jeremiah 11:8). (2) Man is eas- ily deceived and often self deceived (Proverbs 16:25; 28:26; Jeremiah 17:9; 1 John 1:8). (3) Man is a rebel in his heart – “...you rebelled against the com- mandment of the Lord your God, and you did not believe Him nor obey His voice. You have been rebellious against the Lord from the day that I knew you” (Deuteronomy 9:23-24). So we substituted biblical virtue for our own self made fluid values, whatever suits us at the moment. C.S. Lewis stated it another way – “Human history... is the long terrible story of man trying to find something other than God which will make him happy” (in Mere Chris- tianity).
In this series we have considered how the public education system in- creasingly has been the tool to undermine biblical virtue, to supplant it with the values of the Secular Humanist religion.
The recent effect of this indoctrination began in the 1960s with three major players: Carl Rogers(student at Columbia University in the 1920s where John Dewey was a professor) created the seeds of the current mess via his “non-directive” counseling therapy. With the help of Abraham Maslow (post- doctoral fellow at Columbia in the 1930s) and his coworker, Dr. Bill Coul- son, they transformed Rogers’ method into “non-directive” education.
Coulson, coauthor with Rogers of 17 books (such as “Freedom to Learn”, “Humanistic Teaching”,“Learning to Feel, Feeling to Learn”) was for teach- ers to promote Values Clarification. The teacher would not teach what was right or wrong, but would become a facilitator in values clarification, en- couraging children to make up their own right or wrong as they saw fit. This course was packaged under clandestine titles such as “Quest”, “Skills for Living”, “Here’s Looking at You 2000”, “Growing Healthy,” etal. Non-di- rective drug education was called “Process Oriented Drug Education.” Non- directive sex education was called “Comprehensive Sex Education.” They promoted choice without any sense of absolute right and wrong – No virtue.
“....The wicked bend their bow, they make ready their arrow on the string, that they may shoot secretly at the upright in heart. If the foundations be de- stroyed, what can the righteous do” (Ps 11:2-3).

Areas of this property has some locations that provide attractive views of Lake Madison and the surrounding countryside. According to Lake County Planning and Zoning, this parcel has areas zoned in 2 districts – the Northern portions being zoned ag with housing restricted to a maximum of 8 residential sites subject to zoning approval; the Southern portions fall into the Lake Park Zoning which allows for a higher density of residences, although subdivision require- ments would need to be approved by Lake County Planning and Zoning, furthermore this area would be subject to requirements of the Lake Madison Sanitary District; potential buyers are encouraged to review the zoning regulations for a better understanding and clarification of current zoning concerning this property with Lake County Planning and Zoning – ph. 605-256-7610.
