Last week, we concluded with this characteristic of God – His patience with mankind. He was patient from the beginning. Shortly after Adam and Eve sinned, by eating the forbidden fruit, he cast them out of the garden. He warned they would die if they ate the fruit. Dying is separation. They had separated themselves from God, but He allowed them to live, but their sin brought physical death to all of mankind. God was patient then, and continues to be.
The Bible records God’s patience. Six weeks after agreeing to follow God, to accept Him as their Sovereign and hearing His voice (Exodus 19:5- 8; 18-25 &20:1ff), they worshiped an idol of their own making (32:1-35). God wanted to destroy all of them (32:9), but relented when Moses pled with Him(32:11-14). Moses in his anger with Israel broke the tablets of the law, so he returned to God to receive the law again – “And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, long suffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands,forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, by no means clearing the guilty, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the chil- dren and the children’s children to the third and the fourth generation” (34:6-7). A year later God reminded Israel again of His long suffering when they refused to follow His command to enter the promised land (Numbers 14:18). That rebellion reaped 40 years of desert wandering during which everyone over age 20 would die (except Joshua and Caleb).
Fast forward 1400 years, where Paul warns mankind, “Or do you despise the riches of His goodness,forbearance, and long suffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?”(Romans 2:4). If we would just accept God. No, rather man stubbornly wants his way and it al- ways leads to his destruction –“There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death”(Proverbs 16:25). As a society we are on the downhill slide to being destroyed.
God declared His patience, but note the influence of sin has severe con- sequences. Jeremiah pleaded40 years with Judah to repent, stating God’s will “Thus says the Lord: “Behold, I set before you the way of life and the way of death” (Jer 21:8). They were destroyed! Our great grandchildren will live with the result of our sin. And look at the mess (Secular Human- ism) we have allowed and promoted for a century as the legacy for our de- scendants! God is long suffering and ultimately His justice will not be deterred.
