BCYMP CELEBRATES NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH BY HOSTING MONDAY MORNING MENTORING MEET-UPS
January is National Mentoring Month, and this year the Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program (BCYMP) is celebrating the annual campaign aimed at expanding opportunities to connect more of our community’s young people with caring adults by hosting Monday Morning Mentoring Meet-Ups at Kool Beans Coffee.
“National Mentoring Month is a great time to highlight the work we’re doing for youth in our community,” said Darla Biel, BCYMP’s Executive Director. Each Monday in January, from 7:30- 8:30 a.m., Biel or Katie Goossen, BCYMP’s Volunteer Coordinator, will be at Kool Beans on Main Street and will buy coffee for anyone who’d like to learn more about the non-profit’s mission.
BCYMP strives to increase the resilience of young people in our community and add protective
factors against trauma by building and supporting additional consistent and encouraging
relationships with trained, caring adults. BCYMP has an established 1:1, community-based
mentoring program, and continues to pilot a school-based group mentoring program in
collaboration with Avera Behavioral Health.
“BCYMP’s vision is that each child in Brookings County has plenty of adults in their lives that provide support, challenge their growth, and expand their future p os sib ili tie s,” Bi el s aid .
Research shows that mentors play a powerful role in providing young people with the tools to strive and thrive, to attend and engage in school, and to reduce or avoid risky behavior like drug use. In turn, these young people are:
– 55% more likely to be enrolled in college
– 81% more likely to report participating regularly in sports or extracurricular activities
– 78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities.
– Morethantwiceaslikelytosaytheyheldaleadershippositioninacluborsportsteam.
Yet, the same research shows that one in three young people in our country will grow up without a mentor. Today, in Brookings County there are 50 yo un g pe o p le on B CY M P ’s “P en d ing Mentee” list. In other words, 50 youth who could benefit from having a mentor outside their family have applied and are waiting for a BCYMP Mentor.
“In the past two years, BCYMP has doubled its outreach,” said Biel. “We now have 125 active Mentoring Pairs, and can match students who attend Sioux Valley, Brookings, Deubrook and Elkton schools, but there is clearly a need for youth mentoring and room to grow.”
Research research shows that 44% of adults are not yet mentoring but are willing to consider
it and mentoring is poised for growth.18 to 29-year- ol ds a re m or e th a n t w ic e a s likely to cite
having had a mentor in their childhood than those over 50. Almost half of today’s young adults
report having a mentor in their youth and those rates appear to have been rising steadily over the past several decades.
National Mentoring Month is the time of year where engagement from community members interested in becoming a mentor is highest. With the support of the mentoring community, we are encouraging the public to go beyonSd jiuzsted:ig1italceongluagmemnenxt –1anidnbcehcomtaelilnvolved in real life.
Cost: $7.50 /week
In our community, people interested in supporting BCYMP by volunteering or donating can
come to Kool Beans on Main Street from 7:3A0-l8t:e30rna.amt.eanywMeoendkalyi:n J8a/n7ua/1ry8to l-eaTrnFmore.
“If the Monday Meet-ups don’t work for you,” Biel added, “we can meet another time.” She adds that BCYMP is also available to speak at service groups or other organizations about mentoring and ways that adults can increase the resiliency of youth in our community.
National Mentoring Month is led by MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, the national organization working to expand the quality and quantity of youth mentoring relationships nationwide. Each year since its launch in 2002, National Mentoring Month has enjoyed the strong support of the President and the United States Congress. Other prominent individuals who have participated in the campaign include: Maya Angelou, former President Bill Clinton, Clint Eastwood, Quincy Jones, Cal Ripken Jr., Bill Russell, and Usher.
To learn more about the role mentoring plays in our community and to find opportunities to support BCYMP visit https://bcymentoring.org or call 605-697-0444.

In 1990 John Lennox, an Oxford professor, spent two months in Soviet Russia to teach math to university profs. One said, “We hear you believe in God. Why?” Nightly for two months he answered that question. One professor acknowledged “We thought we could get rid of God and retain the values of being human beings. We were wrong. We got rid of God and devalued humanity.” Isn’t that what’s happening in the USA via Sec- ular Humanism as our defacto state religion via the education system? What are the symptoms that we are utterly rejecting God and His ethics and morality?
The Old Testament reveals the stark depravity of mankind via the propensity of ancient Israel’s to reject God and create idols to their liking. Already in their early history as a nation, the record twice declares, “...everyone did what was right in his own eyes” (Judges 17:6; 21:25).
Several decades before Israel’s northern kingdom was destroyed, the prophet Hosea declared God’s to the people, “My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also will re- ject you...because you have forgotten the law of your God....” (Hos 4:6). And God destroyed the nation and scattered the people throughout the Assyrian empire (2 Kings 17:5-23). What had they done? Rejected God’s way and adapted a religion to satisfy their own desires (vv10-16). To wor- ship anyone or thing other than God was a death sentence (Deuteronomy 17:2-5). Since the people rejected His commands, God destroyed them. Have we as a nation rejected God’s word? His morality of living?
The Russian math professor said the nation got rid of God and His word. Bibles were not printed. It was a true famine of God in the land (Amos 8:11). When the shackles of socialism came off, a lady told me anad in the paper offered free copies of the gospel of John. She read it daily for 90 days, crying each time she read it. She had found salvation and joy in the depths of her spirit, now being a Christian for 25 years.
While so many anxiously in the world await a Bible translation in their own language, Goodwill gives used Bibles away free. So many Bibles, but does anyone want them? Thus the first symptom of the effect of Secular Humanism!
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 16:25).
