OPEN LETTER TO ALL 2021 CITY COUNCIL AND MAYORAL CANDIDATES AND BROOKINGS CITIZENS
Citizens of Brookings, our city's masking and business restriction mandates have been devastating to many of the small businesses in our community, and have caused severe financial hardships to many of the families who work and live here.
The City Council should have ended those mandates months ago, with citizens being advised to take the necessary precau- tions that would best protect their own individual health con- cerns, and businesses being allowed to operate to the capacity levels and masking recommendations that best fit their individ- ual business models.
These Brookings City Council mandates have dragged on and on, while other cities in South Dakota either eschewed mandates al- together, or let their short-lived mandates expire. Will our City Council members promise to stop choosing favorites between big box retailers and restaurants/bars, hair salons and fitness centers, and end all mandates April 30th?
Will the City Council incumbents running in this election, Nick Wendell and Patty Bacon, and mayor candidates, Ope Niemeyer and Jeff Miller, promise to slam the door on these mandates and NOT reimpose them again on our city with every new little Covid flare-up that may blow in later this summer or fall?
I will.
If I am fortunate enough to be elected as the Mayor of Brookings on April 13th, I pledge right now to do everything in my power to get Brookings open and keep it open and never impose any business restrictions or mask mandates – and let our citizens and businesses make their own decisions regarding personal health and financial interests.
I would very much appreciate your vote on April 13th - and look forward to serving you!
2021 Candidates, the citizens of Brookings await your reply.

Planting Potatoes
By Gloria Bauske, SD Master Gardener Brookings Area Master Gardeners
I remember helping my mother plant seed potatoes on Good Friday when the air was crisp and the birds had just recently returned home from warmer places. It was a fun but dirty project that involved get- ting into the mud but it was the first glimmer of hope that spring wad arrived.
Seed potatoes can be purchased in many different stores that also sell flowers and bulbs. Carefully cut the potatoes leaving one eye per piece of potato that will sprout and take root.
Buy the potatoes at least a month before you plan to plant them. Store them in a cool, dry area that is around 50 degrees with good lighting with high humidity. Place them on a sheet or cardboard in a safe place where rodents can’t carry them off and let them scab over for at least five days. That will deter disease from invading the po- tato.
Plant them twelve to fifteen inches apart in rows that are three feet apart to allow ample room for the potatoes to grow.
The potato is a familiar vegetable root for Native Americans. It is the Solanum tuberosum that is a perennial in the Night Shade family. The wild species started modern-day Peru and can be found just about anywhere in the United States. Choosing the right potato for you can depend on personal preference.
Russet: Has a light and fluffy center and a thick skin
Red: Is a firm potato with a think skin
Yellow: Has a creamy texture and a buttery flavor
White: Is firm thin-skinned potato with a nutty flavor
Purple: Has a vibrant color that is appealing to the pallet with medium skin and earthy flavor.
Fingerling: Has a firm texture and nutty buttery flavor
Petite: Similar taste to larger potatoes with concentrated flavors

That’s a good question – Will you know God? Many, if not most, will say they know God, but they do not. Folks sense there is a supreme power larger than this world. They might even have heard or even know some- thing about God. But to know Him is the beginning of everything about you, your family and the nation. How we have miserably failed. What? Failed?
Our tendency is to deny failure. If the Old Testament (OT) prophets re- veal anything about humans, it is that selfish pride leads to destruction – personally, societally and nationally. What? Folks failed to submit to God. They did not even know Him.
Just decades before ancient Israel’s northen kingdom was destroyed and removed from their land,God’s prophet, Hosea stated why – “...My peo- ple are destroyed....Because you have rejected knowledge....Because you have forgotten the law of your God (Hosea 4:6). And because of their failure,“...The more they sinned....They set their heart on their iniquity....” (Hos 4:7-8). That’s where the nation is today. But because of our igno- rance of God, our prideful self denies that we could be wrong, as indi- viduals and as a nation.
That the Bible opens with dialogue between the first pair and evil, the seemingly harmless violation of God’s order is revealed to be huge – death! Sin brings physical and spiritual death (separation from God). And it brings national ruin.
That we are a government of the people is revealed by the sins that man loves and therefore legalized by government – abortion, alcohol, blurred justice of real crime, easy divorce, drugs, gambling(beginning with the lotto), homosexual marriage, pornography & etc – These destroy indi- viduals, family and the stable nation. Oh, and getting God and the Bible out of the public sphere has been a century-long task (Hos 4:6). Forbid that we should be reminded of our utter demise. We love our sin!
Before God destroyed them, his prophet pleaded “O Israel, return to the Lord your God....” (Hos14:1). We can not know how to return to God un- less we know Him. Knowing God begins by studying His word. The OT reveals God’s interaction with individuals and nations. Regarding the OT, the apostle Paul admonished, “For whatever things were written before were written for our learning....” (Romans15:4). Read, study, learn and re- turn to God is the beginning for you and the nation... to restore the foun- dation.
