TYPES OF COMPOST BINS
By Gloria Bauske, SD Master Gardener
Brookings Area Master Gardeners
There are three types of compost bins, Holding units, enclosed bins and tumblers. Each has its own unique benefit.
Holding units are simple bins that are easy to construct using chicken wire or wood slates. They are best for composting fall leaves and yard trimmings.
Enclosed bins: are made of plastic or metal containers punctured with holes to allow air to ventilate. They are best for kitchen scraps and yard waste.
Tumblers: are enclosed bins that are commercially manufactured for easy training and mixing of compost with crank handles. The handle allows the entire bin to be turned at once.
Some prefer to compost underground with out a bin. It is one of the oldest methods of composting. The most basic method is to dig a hole and deposit food scraps in it and cover with at least eight inches of soil to prevent animals from smelling them and digging it up. If the conditions are right it can take as little as two weeks for the compost to decompose.
Trench Composting is another method of composting: Rows in garden plots are selected and rotated on a three-year plan. For example-year one plot A is used to bury organic matter and plot C is planted and plot B is left to fallow. The second year plot C is left to fallow, plot B is used to bury compost and plot A is planted.
Sheet Composting: it is also called lasagna composting because of the layering technique used. Simply mark off a area you want to use and start covering the area with a one inch area of newspaper to deter weeds. Add a layer of brown material like leaves, straw or sawdust up to about four to six inches. Top that with a three to five inch layer of green material such as vegetable waste, grass clippings or garden waste. Add a layer of peat moss or finished compost . Water the bed thoroughly after applying each layer. You can plant in the bed immediately.

Jesus of Nazareth made the audacious, yea astounding and pro- found claim to be God having come to earth in the flesh to experi- ence the temptations of mankind so as to become the compassionate Savior for each person who would submit to His will – become Chris- tians and live according to His will – the New Testament (NT). If the NT is true, His claim to have all authority on earth and in heaven (Matthew28:18) and that He will be the judge in the final day (John 5:22; Acts 17:30-31) If this is so, everyone will ultimately be ac- countable to Him. In stark contrast and beyond man’s imagination is the claim of Jesus resurrection from the dead and ascension into heaven. When the apostle Paul forwarded such a claim to the Greek philosophers, they mocked him (Acts 17:32). Yes, indeed this is hard to believe, but what if it is true – His resurrection, a final judgment and destinies of heaven for the faithful and an unthinkable hell for those who refuse Jesus? How can we know the certainty of this wild claim?
As we considered last week the amount of the most ancient records relative to the time lapse to the occurrence of the event recorded, is the NT. No other documented event in ancient history has such quantities of written evidence. (In comparison to the average Greco-Roman au- thor, the NT has 1000 times more ancient mss/fragments. The ques- tion is “Has the NT we have in hand the that was originally written? Is it accurate?
Even the early Christian church made the appeal to check the apos- tolic writings. During the next 100 years, Tertullian, a theologian en- couraged people to, “... visit the apostolic churches (Corinth, Philippi,Thessalonica, Ephesus and Rome) in which the very chairs of the apostles still preside, in which their very authentic letters are read.” Of the nearly 6000 NT complete mss and fragments, the earli- est has been dated to the late 1st century. With so many copies, vari- ances are evident. The question do they affect the transmission of the original text. Most variances are misspellings. Less than on1% of vari- ances affect the meaning of the verse. None have any effect on doc- trine taught in the NT. This gives us confidence we have what was originally written. Yet there is more evidence confirming the NT’s re- liability.

Pep and Gerry Schroeder have made the difficult decision to leave their beautiful acreage, as they are moving to an apart- ment. This acreage is located at 48222 229th St., Flandreau, SD; located from the Jct. of Hwy. #13 and Pipestone Ave./Hwy. #32 in Flandreau, SD (Trading Post Corner) - 1.2 miles North on Hwy. #13 to 229th St., then 11⁄4 miles West on 229th St.
SALE DATE: THURSDAY EVENING, JULY 29, 2021 SALE TIMES: REAL ESTATE AT 5:00 PM WITH PERSONAL PROPERTY TO FOLLOW
AUCTIONEERS NOTE: Being both in their 90’s and enjoying 74 years of marriage, Pep and Gerry Schroeder have made the difficult decision that they can no longer maintain and manage this acreage, and subsequently have made the decision to offer this property at public auction. Throughout the past 40+ years I have sold a countless number of acreages and farms, but very seldom do acreages of this caliber become available on the market. Acreages with the kind of setting and view as is found on this property are virtually impossible to find in any marketplace. This property features a comfortable one owner ranch style home with a walkout basement that is situated on a spectac- ular location with a pleasant rural setting with a great view overlooking the Big Sioux River and with heavily wooded areas near the residence and throughout the property and along the river bank. Additionally, this property also fea- tures cropland/hayland and existing wildlife habitat and recreational areas and other excellent amenities, which truly makes this a “One of a Kind” property! Mark your calendars and make plans to inspect this property, get your financing in order and come prepared to bid on this extraordinary property!! Chuck Sutton
This +/- 57.25 acre acreage will be offered as a unit and includes a quality built “one owner” home that is in need of some re- modeling, updating and repair, but perhaps moreso, it is the setting, view and other great features and amenities, that makes this a the spectacular property that it is! The residence on this property consists of a one owner ranch style home with a walk-out lower level that was built for the Schroeder’s by Meyer’s Brothers Construction of Elkton, SD in 1990. The home has 2”x6” sidewalls, oak millwork throughout and has a wood basement, and based on County Assessor’s information, has approx. 1,276 sq. ft. on the upper level and has a substantial amount finished area (+/- 810 sq. ft.) on the lower level. The main level has an open front wooden deck and front entry with closet to an open living and dining area with 4 large fixed and operating windows and an East patio door to an adjacent upper level deck with a corner gazebo type structure and a rear staircase which all provide beautiful river and countryside views; the remainder of the upper level has a kitchen with a snack bar and oak cabinets; there is a master bedroom with a walk-in closet and private 3⁄4 bath; 2nd bedroom with double closet; full bath with tub-shower unit; and a wide hall way with a main floor laundry and side walk door to an attached single garage with OH door, electric opener and walk door. The home has a full lower level with a walk-out to a concrete patio and includes a spacious family room with woodburning fireplace with a brick stone faced surround and large windows providing for views and natural lighting; additionally the lower level has 2 finished rooms (1 utilized as a sewing room and the other as a storage/non-legal bedroom) – each would need ingress-egress windows installed, but could be potentially retrofitted to provide 2 additional bedrooms; also there is a utility room with a Lennox Pulse Furnace with central AC, electric HW heater, 200 amp breaker electric service and has a Nutone central vacuum system. The exterior of the home has newer asphalt shingles and has cedar siding that is in need of repair and staining or potential replacement. Other improvements on the property include a 24’x24’ garage/stg building with a concrete floor, OH and walk doors and has a colored steel exterior. Also, a good distance Southeast of the residence is a galvanized metal storage/livestock building with dirt floor. This acreage and adjacent land in- cludes areas with terrific views and has numerous large mature trees throughout the property and adjacent to the bank of the Big Sioux River, as well younger trees and shrubbery planted by the Schroeder’s throughout the period they have owned and occupied the property. This property is serviced by SVEA, Big Sioux Community Rural Water and septic system. The LP tank on the property is leased. According to Moody County Director of Equalization, this property contains a total of approx. 57.25 acres – some of which lies within and both sides of the Big Sioux River. There may be a potential 2nd rural housing location available on this property, although a buyer would need to complete their own due diligence to pursue this matter and to verify floodplain setbacks and meet any or all planning and zoning requirements, regulations or other criteria in order to ascertain the viability for use or approval of a 2nd potential housing site. According to FSA, this property is indicated to contain approx. 55.94 acres of farmland with 23.45 acres of cropland – most of which has been utilized as hayland as sig- nificant portions of the cropland acres lie within the floodplain, as there are no established FSA crop yields or bases. According to the owners, most of the crop/hayland acres are sowed to brome and ryegrass. This is a spectacular property that is home to abundant wildlife including whitetail deer, wild turkeys, pheasants, waterfowl and other wildlife and has been a tremendous private honey hole for the Schroeder’s, their family and a limited number of friends who have harvested numerous trophy deer and other wild game on this property. If you are in the market for a multifaceted and “one of a kind property”, then we invite you to come inspect the property and see for yourself what this property has to offer!
