FOR THE LOVE OF ANTIQUES (AND MORE)
You’re looking forward to the 48th Brookings Summer Arts Festival, and why wouldn’t you be? As always, it promises to be a most wonderful way to spend the weekend. You’ve been dutifully saving your money since last year’s Festival, and with any luck at all the artist you admired last year will be back this year. And now you have the funds to buy a piece, and maybe even a second piece. And think of the new artists you will discover this year, and there are quite a few of those. When you need a break from looking at all the handmade art, there are
38 food booths to sustain you
for all the shopping still ahead
of you. The crab fritters will still
be there along with funnel
cakes, soba noodles,
quesadillas, blooming onions,
homemade apple crisp and ice
cream, etc. All diets are off for
the weekend! Don’t eat too
much because you still have a
lot of Festival to experience! The Edibles and Naturals area, on the South side of the park by the Antiques area, features products such as jellies, honey, etc. which are produced locally. Many products you can taste before you buy. And don’t forget to visit the Living History area where you can see basketmaking, a tinsmith, and other historical crafts. When you are ready for a break, make sure you take in some of the entertainment taking place in the bandshell and on two other stages in the park.
Make sure you save adequate time to visit the Antiques area on the South side of the park. There are ten antique dealers, one of them brand new this year. They carry a wide variety of merchandise and enjoy interacting with the public about that merchandise. Bring your questions about what you already own and ask more questions about any piece you might be looking at to add to your collection or to start a new one. Luckily you do have “adequate time,” a whole weekend, to pay many visits to the area. You’ll need that time to study all the vintage glassware, the furniture, the pottery, the pieces that just appeal to you and you don’t know exactly why.
Your 2019 BSAF Antiques Area vendors are:
R. L. Brenner, (Chances R) Ethan, SD
Curtis Buer, (Buer Antiques) Canby, MN
Randy Bullis, (Bits of Yesterday) Arlington, SD
Kathy Cole, (Memory Box Antiques) Burleson, TX
Boyd and Judy Hagenson, (BJ’s Collectibles) Britton, SD Sandra Halajian, (Sandy's Unique Collectibles) Watertown, SD Joe and Shawn Hoffman, (Hoffman Antiques) Vermillion, SD Chesley Johnson, (Chesley Johnson Antiques) Marion, SD
Dave and Diane Rieck, (Antique Trap) Humboldt, SD
Marc and Patrice Widmark, (The Barn Antiques) Hendricks, MN
Visit the Antiques Area at the Brookings Summer Arts Festival, Pioneer Park Saturday and Sunday, July 13 and 14.

The Brookings Convention & Visitors Bureau is excited to announce Downtown at Sundown is back for its fifth summer of free concerts on Fifth Street in downtown Brookings. Every Thursday night from July 11 through August 22, we invite the community to enjoy free family fun from 5-9 p.m. with live music, food and craft vendors and free children’s activities. Downtown at Sundown is seven nights of sunshine, live music, cold drinks, local food and a friendly atmosphere. Now in its fifth summer, Downtown at Sundown offers a family-friendly night out with free admission and free kid’s activities. Each week features a different local opener and headliner band, while food vendors and retail booths offer a little something for everyone. This event would not be possible without the support of the City of Brookings and Headliner Sponsor, First Bank & Trust. For more information, visit the website at www.downtownatsundown.org for the 2019 lineup, sponsor highlights, vendors, history, and more.

BRIEF HISTORY: Downtown at Sundown officially kicked off in the summer of 2015. However, the initial idea for a festival- like, outdoor music concert came from the Brookings community. In 2013, Brookings Economic Development Corporation conducted a Charrette comprised of small focus groups representative of all ages and cross-sectors of the Brookings population, as well as a community-wide survey. The results clearly reflected the want and need for a festival-like community event and central gathering place for all ages. After a few important meetings and creative brain power, Downtown at Sundown was off to a fast and furious start. Planning for the 7-week concert series begins in February, while each night in July-August takes an estimated 104 staff and volunteer hours to coordinate, set-up, and execute the event. In 2019, the new Downtown Director, Ashley Biggar is taking the helm, under the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce. ABOUT THE BROOKINGS CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAU: The Brookings Convention & Visitors Bureau (CVB) promotes the city and its diverse attractions to visitors and residents alike on all levels, while seeking out opportunities to attract and develop a strong base of conventions and tournaments. For more information, contact the CVB office at (605) 692-6125, www.visitbrookingssd.com or at 415 8th Street South, Brookings.

BROOKINGS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL 2019 COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Coming from all different walks of life, the committee members of the Brookings Summer Arts Festival all have one thing in common: the desire to create the finest arts festival in the state of South Dakota. Each year, the thirty to forty volunteers come together once a month to plan and design a weekend of art, food and entertainment for the thousands of people who attend the annual event each year. It takes a diverse group of volunteers to put the festival together, and we could use your help. Please contact us at [email protected] or (605) 692-2787 with any questions and for meeting times.

The US constitution’s 1st amendment states “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof....” Its purpose was to prohibit the establishment of a state church such as the Church of England (such state churches exist in Europe today).
The conflict among religions exists throughout history. The best histori- cal evidence is in the Bible.Sinful man wrestles with Jehovah (God), ac- cepting some, but also rejecting His principles designed for the stability of mankind – the foundation of stable society.
The USA was founded on biblical principles – laws and governmental structure. Our history reflects the constant struggle between the movements of Christendom and non-theistic faith. We have considered the19th century Christian Evidence Movement, its influence evident by universities’ re- quired Christian evidence courses throughout the 19th century (eg. Prince- ton 1821-1902; Dartmouth 1822-1909). Still, no state church!
During the 19th century the destructive influence of German higher crit- icism of the Bible, and Darwinian evolution served to undermine Chris- tendom, giving rise to biblical compromise and a slow but sure Trojan horse of atheism infused into American culture. This was evident by Unitarian minister Charles Potter who published, “Humanism: A New Religion,” (1929) and the New Humanist magazine(1927) (University of Chicago).
The foremost Humanist was atheist John Dewey, the “Father of modern American education,” who was greatly influenced by Darwin and has had the greatest impact on American education in the 20th century. He believed Darwin not only answered the question of our origin, but that he had also discovered the governing principle of mankind – there is no absolute truth or fixed principle in anything – everything is ever changing. Ultimately the governing principle of life is pragmatism, meaning that the situation gov- erns what should be done with no consideration of an absolute virtue of right or wrong. Whatever is expedient to satisfy a given situation ought is OK.
This new non-theistic religion rapidly developed its charter – Humanist Manifesto (1933) – of which Dewey was one of the authors. The mani- festo’s first three planks recognized the importance of the origin of the uni- verse and of man himself (as does every religion) – “Religious humanists regard the universe asself-existing and not created.” (first plank). Bravo! Darwin gave the atheism its missing plank –origin.
Since the advent of Humanism in the USA a century has passed. How has it affected our lives –religious, moral, ethical and practical? If the founda- tions are destroyed....
