PREVENTING PICKLEBALL INJURIES
As most pickleball players can attest, swinging a racquet a few hundred times and chasing a ball around a court can lead to some painful problems. The most common injuries are sprains and strains of the hips, knees, dominant shoulder and elbow, and low back.
TIPS
CONSIDER THE FOLLOWING INJURY- PREVENTION TIPS:
Stretch and get some blood flowing with a brisk 10-minute walk before hitting the court.
Choose shoes with proper arch supports, or consider after- market insoles or custom orthotics.
Make sure you are well hydrated before, during, and after your match. Replace your fluids, whether you feel thirsty or not. (Alcohol and caffeine don’t help.)
Learn and practice proper pickleball techniques, including your grip, swing, and footwork.
Some mild soreness acceptable, but don't hesitate to stop in the middle of a match if you experience more significant or sharp pain.

HAND & WRIST INJURIES
Attach a long lever to a small joint and swiftly hit a ball - What could go wrong? Anything from overuse strains to broken bones.
ELBOW TENDONITIS
Firmly gripping a racquet places stress on the bony bumps where your wrist and forearm muscles attach to your elbow. This is often a site of tendinitis within pickleball players.
KNEE PAIN
Running and pivoting places tremendous torque on your knees. This stress can damage ligaments and irritate joint cartilage.
BACK PAIN
Continually bending forward and quickly rotating places tremendous stress on your spine's soft tissues and joints. Injuries to muscles, ligaments, and discs are common.
ROTATOR CUFF PROBLEMS
Repeatedly raising your arm can pinch sensitive tendons and bursa. Unchecked, small irritations can transition to more significant tears over time.

The second half of property taxes are due by October 31, 2023. Taxes can be paid at the Brookings County Finance office on first floor of the City-County Government Building located at 520 3rd street, Suite 100. To avoid waiting in line a drop box is located in the hallway outside the Finance office and also outside the west entrance of the govern- ment building for afterhours drop off. Payments may also be sent via mail to the Finance Office at 520 3rd Street, Suite 100, Brookings, SD 57006. No receipts will be mailed unless requested. If mailing your taxes, they must be postmarked with an October 31st date or earlier to avoid penalty. To ensure proper payment, please include a parcel num- ber or your tax statement for each property you wish to pay. Only full payments accepted. There is also the option to pay online using a credit card, there will be a convenience fee charged to you for any use of credit cards. To pay online with credit card visit the Brookings County website: www.brookingscountysd.gov. On the right side of the home page click on the link called “Pay Taxes Online” follow the instructions given. It will give you the amount of the convenience fee at that time. Please pay before due date to avoid penalty and interest.

A close reading of the Old Testament reveals the perpetual selfish prideful dominance of one man over another ultimately manifested in slavery. During the New Testament (NT) period of the Roman Empire, 40% of the population was enslaved. Last week we began to consider the evidence in the NT with a remark made by Jesus comparing the power of sin to being a slave (John 8:34-36). Note: The Greek word for slave (doulos) is mentioned 127 times in the NT.
During the apostle Paul’s third mission journey he established a con- gregation in Corinth to whom he wrote several epistles. It was the capi- tal of Achaia (Greece) in the empire and a seaport. Just the number of men needed to moved small ships over land on the Isthmus of Corinth (5 miles long/ascent-descent 260 feet) would be tremendous. Thus, the slave-labor population would be great.
A number of slaves became Christians as indicated by his first epistle – “Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it. For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ’s slave” (1 Cor 7:21-22). The essence is that there is no class dis- tinction among Christians. Whether free or slave, they are equally for- given by Jesus’ blood. Note the potential social impact of Jesus’ only true religion for mankind, only one.
Paul continued, “You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men. Brethren, let each one remain with God in that state in which he was called” (vv23-24). The price at which slave and freedman were bought is the same – Jesus blood.
