MENTAL HEALTH FIRST AID TRAINING TO BE OFFERED
Mental Health First Aid is an 8-hour course that gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis such as contemplating suicide. This is an evidence-based program widely used throughout the United States.
The goal of training is to help support an individual until appropriate professional help arrives. Mental Health First Aiders learn a strategy that includes: assessing risk, respectfully listening to and supporting the individual in crisis, identifying appropriate professional help and other supports.
Participants are introduced to risk factors and warning signs for men- tal health or substance use problems, will engage in experiential ac- tivities that build understanding of the impact of illness on individuals and families, and will learn about evidence-supported treatment and self-help strategies.
Mental Health First Aid is intended for people and organizations that make up the fabric of a community. Professionals who regularly in- teract with people such as police officers, nurses, human resource directors, primary care workers, school/college leadership, faith communities, and friends and family of individuals with mental illness or addiction, and community members are encouraged to attend.
Adult Mental Health First Aid course will be held on October 7th from 8:00AM - 4:30PM at the Brookings Activity Center. Deadline for registration is October 1st.
Contact Heidi Gullickson, Brookings Area United Way, at [email protected] or 692-4979 for more information or register at https://brookingsunitedway.org/mental-health-training/

Larson Manufacturing Employees Donate 3,761 Pounds of Food
A local manufacturing company founded on the principles of quality, integrity and service demonstrated their culture of giving back with a recent donation to the Brookings Area Food Pantry.
Through a friendly competition between departments, employees collected nearly 2 tons of food during the month of August. The annual food drive is one of several events held as part of LAR- SON’s commitment to the Brookings Area United Way, which cul- minates in a fundraising campaign each fall.
“Our company values serve as a roadmap for how we do busi- ness and how we live our lives, bringing us together and driving our culture,” said Jeff Rief, president of Larson Manufacturing. “Giving of our time, resources and prosperity is a key pillar to our success. The recent food drive was a great demonstration of the generosity of the LARSON team and our mission to positively impact the communities where we live.“
The LARSON United Way Committee leads the company’s on- going efforts to raise money and awareness of the needs of the Brookings region and the non-profit organizations who work to improve the lives of local residents. Last year, over 80% of all LARSON employees contributed to the annual United Way fundraising drive, resulting in a $252,248 donation to the organ- ization.

The New Testament declares Jesus of Nazareth to be the “Son of God” 46 times. Jesus declared Himself to be the Son of God (John 3:18). So is Jesus God?
Christianity, originated with Jesus but founded by others only after he disappeared, rapidly spread.Thirty years after Jesus disappeared, the apostle Paul declared “...the gospel which you heard, which was preached to every creature under heaven” (Colossians 1:23; cf Col 1:3- 6). The entire world had heard of this Jesus and what He promised – eternal life.
Jesus not only acknowledged that one can live eternally, He claimed to be the source of eternal life(John 10:28). How could a person make this claim and create the following – Christianity– after He disap- peared? And why has this new religion continued uninterrupted for 2000 years? The attraction of course is that no one wants to die. Every- one normal person wants to live on and on. If that was not so,we would not do all we can (medical system) to continue to live, even a few more months. People fear death. Yet, the apostle Paul, who suffered contin- uously (2 Corinthians 11:23-28) because he relentlessly told of this promise of eternal life.
As he awaited his hearing before Caesar Nero’s court, he wrote, “... in nothing I shall be ashamed, but with all boldness, as always, so now also Christ will be magnified in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ, and to die is gain (Philippians 1:20-21). No fear of death!
About five years later, he was captured under Nero’s persecution and put on trial for being a Christian. On the eve of his death, Paul wrote, “...the time of my departure is at hand. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith” (2 Timothy 4:6-7). No fear! Why? He believed he would live eternally. Decades later, the apostle John boldly declared “that you may know that you have eternal life” (1 John 5:13).
All religions except Christianity depend on what someone said. Christianity is based on what one person did. The resurrection of Jesus from the grave. Paul wrote, “...if Christ is not risen... your faith is also empty” (1 Cor 15:13-14). Did He rise? If so, He is THE way, THE truth and THE life as He declared (John 14:6).
