FOR THE LOVE OF ANTIQUES (AND MORE)
Come to the Brookings Summer Arts Festival to visit the many wonderful art booths, to eat and eat and eat, to be entertained at the bandshell and other stages in the park, to visit and learn in the Rendezvous and Historical area, and to learn and be impressed in the Edibles and Naturals area. But definitely don’t miss the Antiques area on the southwest side of the park. Even if you’re not an “antiquer,” you will enjoy the trip down memory lane.
The funnest part of visiting the ten antiques booths at the Brookings Summer Arts Festival is that you never know what you’re going to find or what you’re going to learn. Those pretty
ruffled dishes that you serve ice cream in – the ones you’ve always wondered about – maybe you’ll find a few more to replace the ones you ‘ve damaged over the years. Maybe you’ll even find out what company made them and when! Or maybe you’ll find a replacement for the pink wine glass your sister knocked over and broke at a family dinner years ago. Maybe you’ll start a new collection of baskets or pottery or cast iron door stops. And don’t forget to bring pictures of items you may be interested in selling to the dealers. Buying and selling antiques is fun and educational for everyone involved, and if you’re lucky you may make a new friend and start a new or add to an existing collection.
Your 2022 BSAF Antiques Area vendors are:
R. L. Brenner, (Chances R) Ethan, SD
Curtis & Irma Buer, (Buer Antiques) Canby, MN Randy Bullis, (Bits of Yesterday) Arlington, SD Kathy Cole, (Memory Box Antiques) Burleson, TX Ardella Galvin, (Rags to Rugs) Roslyn, SD
Jim and Becky Gladis, (Mill Creek Antiques) Chatfield, MN Boyd & Judy Hagenson, (BJ’s Collectibles) Britton, SD Sandra & Thomas Halajian, (Sandy's Unique Collectibles) Watertown, SD
Shawn Hoffman, (Hoffman’s Antiques) Vermillion, SD Dave & Diane Rieck, (Antique Trap) Humboldt, SD
Visit the Antiques Area at the Brookings Summer Arts Festival, Pioneer Park
Saturday and Sunday, July 9 and 10.

BROOKINGS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL 2022 COMMITTEE MEMBERS
Coming from all different walks of life, the committee members of the Brookings Summer Arts Festival all have one thing in common: the desire to create the finest arts festival in the state of South Dakota. Each year, the thirty to forty volunteers come together once a month to plan and design a weekend of art, food and entertainment for the thousands of people who attend the annual event each year. It takes a diverse group of volunteers to put the festival together, and we could use your help.
Please contact us at [email protected] or (605) 692-2787 with any questions and for meeting times.

LIVESTOCK
Last week, we continued discussing why Jesus suffered a horrifying death on the cross. It was a worldwide event – God’s announcement of the cost of sin and the pardon available to every person who would ever live. Jesus was nailed to the cross at 9.a.m, but at noon the world sud- denly became dark for three hours – not just in Jerusalem or Judea. “Now from the sixth hour until the ninth hour there was darkness over all the land” (Matthew 27:45).
Secular records reflect that in the first few centuries people tried to give a natural explanation – eclipse of the sun. However an eclipse of the sun of three hours in one place requires a slowdown of the speed and rotation of the earth’s planetary motion.
In AD 52, Thallus, a historian wrote of this event darkness as an eclipse. Julius Africanus (AD 221) quoted Thallus in his disagreement with Thallus’ assessment that it was an eclipse. Phlegon (AD 137), a Greek author, wrote in his chronology that in the “fourth year of the 202nd Olympiad (AD 33)” that there “was the greatest eclipse of the sun” and that “it became dark in the sixth hour of the day (noon) so that the stars even appeared in the heavens.” Although an eclipse of this length and dimension is not possible (unless it was a miracle), these records provide corroborating evidence that there was an extraordinary darkness in AD 33.
Phlegon further stated that at the same time of the ,“There was a great earthquake in Bithynia, and many things were overturned in Nicea.” That is in harmony with Matthew 27:51 which states that there
was an earthquake in Judea at that time. Although we do not know where the epicenter of the quake was, it was not of a magnitude to de- stroy Jerusalem, but this record shows that the quake was felt 700 miles from Jerusalem. Phlegon’s record corroborates the evidence attested to in the gospel accounts. “So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, ‘Truly this was the Son of God!’” (Matthew 27:54). Implicitly, the soldier recognized the darkness and earthquake was a miraculous event. Why was it dark for three hours (12-3 pm) and then light again at the moment Jesus died on the cross?
