• $2,500 in Prize Money to be Awarded
The thirteenth annual Brookings Area Idea Competition is now open and taking entries from residents, including SDSU and high school stu- dents, providing the chance to win a total of $2,500 in cash prizes.
The 2020 contest, hosted by Brookings Economic Development Cor- poration (BEDC), encourages entrepreneurs, innovators, creative thinkers, and basically anyone with a good idea to participate by sub- mitting a one-page description simply explaining what your idea is, who would benefit from it and where are you at in the process of developing your idea into a potential product or business. Finalists will be asked to give a five-minute pitch of their idea to a panel of judges.
“The Idea Competition continues to be one of our most popular pro- grams,” said Jennifer Quail, BEDC Director of Entrepreneur Support. “In addition to having minimal requirements, this contest provides peo- ple with the opportunity to take their product or business ideas to the next level of development.”
Ideas can be submitted online at startupbrookings.com/idea Entries will be placed in either the General Business or Science/Technology cat- egories, and a total of $2,500 in prize money will be awarded with re- ceipt of money subject to winners reaching business milestones.
The competition is free, and the deadline for idea submissions is Tues- day, February 18th. Finalists will pitch their ideas on Friday, February 28th, and winners will be announced at an open house networking event that evening, from 4:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. at the Brookings Innova- tion Center.
“Brookings is a very creative and innovative community,” said Quail. “We are looking forward to seeing what the next big idea will be!” Questions about the contest may be directed to Quail at [email protected] or 605-697-8103.
The Idea Competition is just one of many programs supporting ideas, in- novation and entrepreneurship in the Brookings region. For more infor- mation, visit the Brookings Start-up Hub at www.startupbrookings.com

BEDC Funded Equipment Expands Opportunities for SDSU

• PCB Printer to Enhance Student Experience, Faculty Research
Brookings Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) is excited to continue supporting SDSU student and faculty innovation opportunities

by providing access to a Printed Circuit Board (PCB) printer. This printer liwviellrbye!a key resource for numerous student teams working in a variety of areas: mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, biological en-

BEDC manages a science and technology equipment fund to support en- trepreneurial activities within the Brookings community. The intent of the fund is to assist startups and those focused on emerging technologies with financing for specialized equipment integral to their mission. This
fund is utilized to help startups purchase equipment through a no-inter-

when presented with an opportunity to support these efforts, we took

it,”saidJenniferQuail,BEDCDirectorofEntrepreneurSupport.
PCBs are used when developing prototypes, conducting research and in
numerous senior design projects. Currently, students and faculty work- ing on senior design or independent research projects develop these PCBs usually as a rough prototype on breadboards or use pre-assembled bEoaRrds as needed. The new printer will not only speed up the process of design, but also increase the accuracy of the boards and provide a pro- fessional outcome. Shorter development time can lead to enhanced dis- covery, redirection of efforts and elevated results and outcomes.
The PCB printer has been purchased by BEDC and will be available to students and faculty early in the Spring 2020 semester.
“We see the PCB printer as a key tool and resource for our students as it provides for a better understanding of the process from starting with a design to finishing with production,” said Dr. Anamika Prasad, Assistant Professor of Mechanical Engineering at SDSU. “In addition, it will also enhance the professionalism of the student project which is critical when seekinginternshipsandemployment.”
BEDC’s Entrepreneur Support Program is interested in the continued development of creative and impactful ways to support ideas, innovation and entrepreneurship in the Brookings region. For more information, visit the Brookings Startup Hub at www.startupbrookings.com contact Quail at (605) 697-8103, by email at [email protected] or stop by their office at 2301 Research Park Way, Ste. 113, Brookings.

BCYMP CELEBRATES NATIONAL MENTORING MONTH BY HOSTING MONDAY MORNING MENTORING MEET-UPS
January is National Mentoring Month, and this year the Brookings County Youth Mentoring Program (BCYMP) is celebrating the annual campaign aimed at expanding opportunities to connect more of our community’s young people with caring adults by hosting Monday Morning Mentoring Meet-Ups at Kool Beans Coffee.
“National Mentoring Month is a great time to highlight the work we’re doing for youth in our community,” said Darla Biel, BCYMP’s Executive Director. Each Monday in January, from 7:30- 8:30 a.m., Biel or Katie Goossen, BCYMP’s Volunteer Coordinator, will be at Kool Beans on Main Street and will buy coffee for anyone who’d like to learn more about the non-profit’s mission.
BCYMP strives to increase the resilience of young people in our community and add protective factors against trauma by building and supporting additional consistent and encouraging relationships with trained, caring adults. BCYMP has an established 1:1, community-based mentoring program, and continues to pilot a school-based group mentoring program in collaboration with Avera Behavioral Health.
“BCYMP’s vision is that each child in Brookings County has plenty of adults in their lives that provide support, challenge their growth, and expand their future possibilities,” Biel said.
Research shows that mentors play a powerful role in providing young people with the tools to strive and thrive, to attend and engage in school, and to reduce or avoid risky behavior like drug use. In turn, these young people are:
– 55% more likely to be enrolled in college
– 81% more likely to report participating regularly in sports or extracurricular activities – 78% more likely to volunteer regularly in their communities.
– Morethantwiceaslikelytosaytheyheldaleadershippositioninacluborsportsteam.
Yet, the same research shows that one in three young people in our country will grow up without a mentor. Today, in Brookings County there are 50 young people on BCYMP’s “Pending Mentee” list. In other words, 50 youth who could benefit from having a mentor outside their family have applied and are waiting for a BCYMP Mentor.
“In the past two years, BCYMP has doubled its outreach,” said Biel. “We now have 125 active Mentoring Pairs, and can match students who attend Sioux Valley, Brookings, Deubrook and Elkton schools, but there is clearly a need for youth mentoring and room to grow.”
Research research shows that 44% of adults are not yet mentoring but are willing to consider it and mentoring is poised for growth.18 to 29-year-olds are more than twice as likely to cite having had a mentor in their childhood than those over 50. Almost half of today’s young adults report having a mentor in their youth and those rates appear to have been rising steadily over the past several decades.
National Mentoring Month is the time of year where engagement from community members interested in becoming a mentor is highest. With the support of the mentoring community, we are encouraging the public to go beyond just digital engagement – and become involved in real life.
In our community, people interested in supporting BCYMP by volunteering or donating can come to Kool Beans on Main Street from 7:30-8:30 a.m. any Monday in January to learn more.
“If the Monday Meet-ups don’t work for you,” Biel added, “we can meet another time.” She adds that BCYMP is also available to speak at service groups or other organizations about mentoring and ways that adults can increase the resiliency of youth in our community.
National Mentoring Month is led by MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership, the national organization working to expand the quality and quantity of youth mentoring relationships nationwide. Each year since its launch in 2002, National Mentoring Month has enjoyed the strong support of the President and the United States Congress. Other prominent individuals who have participated in the campaign include: Maya Angelou, former President Bill Clinton, Clint Eastwood, Quincy Jones, Cal Ripken Jr., Bill Russell, and Usher.
To learn more about the role mentoring plays in our community and to find opportunities to support BCYMP visit https://bcymentoring.org or call 605-697-0444.

The readily visible symptoms that Secular Humanism is the nation’s reli- gion is everywhere. Most folks do not see them. Each generation grows up thinking their environment is normal, acceptable and right.Previous gener- ations bemoan the direction of the new generation. But were the previous generations right? The truth is if one does not have actual biblical knowl- edge, he does not know the certainty of what is right and wrong. That per- son will live by his own feelings or a manmade standard. That is what the religion of Humanism is – manmade! Some might deny or scoff that Secu- lar Humanism is a religion, however Humanists own words are confirmation.
John Dewey, Columbia U professor and signatory of Humanist Manifesto I (1933) wrote, “If we have any ground to be religious about anything, we may take education religiously” (New Republic, Sept. 13,1922). Charles Reese also a signatory, published Humanist Religion (1931) and edited Hu- manist Sermons(1927). In Humanism (1933), John Dietrich declared “...while there has grown up within liberal churches of America a very def- inite movement known as Humanism, which is seeking to ground religion in human living rather than in some supernatural existence....” In 2000, A World Religious reader devotes a chapter(pp17-58) to Secular Humanism, thereby recognizing it as a religion.
In 1983, John Dunphy, declared, “I am convinced that the battle for hu- mankind’s future must be waged and won in the public school classroom by teachers who correctly perceive their role as the proselytizers of a new faith:...These teachers must embody the same selfless dedication as the most rabid fundamentalist preachers, for they will be ministers of another sort, utilizing a classroom instead of a pulpit to convey humanist values in what- ever subject they teach, regardless of the educational level—preschool day care or large state university. The classroom must and will become an arena of conflict between the old and the new—the rotting corpse of Christianity, together with all its adjacent evils and misery, and the new faith of human- ism” (“A Religion for a New Age,” The Humanist).
The goal to get God and His word out of our society or at foster biblical ig- norance has always been the goal of Secular Humanism and the public edu- cation system and theological liberal seminaries have been its evangelistic vehicle. Increasingly for 40 years the most obvious symptom is the state of the family unit. What has happened to the family?
