Festival of Trees
Every year the Brookings Arts Council is transformed into a winter won- derland of holiday splendor created around beautifully decorated trees and displays each with their own theme and style. From whimsical to el- egant and everything in between, this year promises to be no different!
Sign up for tree decorating is available on the BAC website, brookings artscouncil.org. You are also welcome to drop in at the Arts Council and fill out a form. We will continue with last year’s tradition and also accept 3-D non-traditional trees.
Our gallery this year will be themed a Mid-Century Modern Holiday but decorators are free to decorate their tree in anyway their group chooses. We have focused our decorations on the era the represents a combination of post World War II practicality, 50s era optimism, 60s era earthiness, and 70s era tones and textures neatly wrapped up in a stylish ode to Scandinavian design.
The Festival of Trees this year also includes a local artisan shop, the Holly Leaf, musical performances throughout the holidays, and of course the trees!
Watch our website for special extra hours during the holiday season. If you have any questions please call 605-692-4177 or email director [email protected].

New Program Announced: GIFT CARD GIVEBACK
Teaming Up with the Community to Safely Support Our Small Businesses
The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce has conducted surveys of their membership over the past months and has found many businesses continue to struggle, some even at risk of having to close their doors within mere months if conditions don't improve. In response, the Chamber of Commerce has created the Gift Card Give Back program. The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce will build an online shop where gift certificates to participating local businesses will be sold.
The program is open to all locally owned, for-profit small businesses located in the Brookings area that are struggling due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Businesses may join the program by completing the participation agreement form at brookingschamber.org/givebackform and by sending to [email protected] before Friday, November 13 at 5:00 pm. A membership to the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce is required.
The online store will go live on Thursday, November 19. Shoppers may visit brookingschamber.org/store to purchase gift certificates. The program will match each purchase, dollar for dollar, for as long as the matching fund lasts. That means that for each $20 unit purchased, the customer receives a $40 gift certificate to be redeemed when the time is right, and the business receives that $40 now, when cashflow is most crucial.
Kelsey Doom, the Chamber’s President & CEO, says “This pandemic has affected us all, but we’re finding the impacts are significantly greater in our small business community. This program is designed to double any investment made to the matching fund using consumers’ purchases of gift certificates. It’s really a win- win.”
The shopping experience will be broken into two phases. Phase 1 will include a $500 purchase limitation per household; in addition, no more than 5 gift certificates to a single business may be purchased. If there are matching funds left after December 1, 2020, Phase 2 will begin. Phase 2 will simply remove the purchase limitation per household/business. Businesses who sign up are required to agree to a set of terms and conditions for participation. Certificates will expire December 31, 2021.
Individuals and organizations wishing to contribute to the matching fund are invited to contact Kimberly Ton at the Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce. The more funds that are raised means more help that we as a community can provide to the Brookings area small business community.

BEDC Start-Up Academy Now Available
Free online resource walks through steps of star ng a business
Brookings Economic Development Corporation (BEDC) is excited to announce the launch of an online program for anyone thinking about starting a business.
The Start-Up Academy introduces participants to the start-up process and walks them through the steps, terminology and templates of start- ing a business. The program covers seven different modules - Assess Yourself, Assess Your Idea, Business Plan, Legal, Financing, Accounting and Marketing. Each module has an audio component and supplemen- tary resources including templates, how-to guides and examples.
“Brookings has been success in building momentum within its entre- preneurial community,” said Jennifer Quail, BEDC’s Director of Entre- preneur Support and creator of the Start-Up Academy. “We did not want the coronavirus to impact the delivery of services these entre- preneurs need. Being able to offer the Start-Up Academy will support the continued growth of the Brookings area economy through new business development.”
To access the Start-Up Academy, visit startupbrookings.com. In-per- son, individual meetings are also available, and Quail encourages en- trepreneurs at all stages of business development to contact her. She is a certified entrepreneur coach and offers free, confidential con- sultations. Quail can be reached at (605) 697-8103 or by email at jen [email protected]
The Start-Up Academy is funded in part through a grant from USDA Rural Development, which supports programs intended to improve the economy and quality of life in rural America. The Start-Up Acad- emy is just one of BEDC’s many events and programs that are part of the Brookings Start-up Hub, supporting ideas, innovation, and entre- preneurship in the Brookings region. These resources have helped es- tablish Brookings as one of the top communities for entrepreneurs in the nation. For more information, visit startupbrookings.com

Brookings COVID-19 Relief Fund
The Brookings COVID-19 Relief Fund, a collaborative effort through the Brookings Foundation and the Brookings Area United Way. This fund has been created to support providing basic needs services to local nonprofit organizations and area residents who are immediately suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic. Grants have been allocated on a rolling basis as fundraising continues throughout the cycle of this outbreak and the recovery phases making it possible to move resources quickly and to be able to adjust to the evolving needs going forward.
Over $109,735 has been granted out of the COVID-19 Relief Fund to local organizations including the Boys & Girls Club of Brookings, My Neighbor, Family Back2School Program, Brookings Arts Coun- cil, Brookings Regional Humane Society, Lutheran Social Services, Brookings County Child Protection Team, Brookings Backpack Project, and the Salvation Army to assist local residents.
“Our community has seen a large increase in needs. With the Helpline Center data, we have seen an increase of 233% in calls regarding food assistance, a 93.5% increase in calls for rent and mortgage relief, and a 36% increase in calls for mental health aid. This data is comparing January thru August of 2019 to 2020,” said Heidi Gullickson, Executive Director of Brookings Area United Way.
Donations can be made on both organizations’ websites, brookingsfoundation.org and brookingsunitedway.org or by mailing a donation to Brookings COVID-19 Relief Fund, First Bank & Trust Attn: Jeff Lee, PO Box 505, Brookings, SD 57006. This fund is also participating in South Dakota Day of Giving on December 1st. More information regarding Covid-19 changes to nonprofit services, how to request help, and how to volunteer can be found at brookingsunitedway.org/covid-19
The Brookings Foundation and the Brookings Area United Way will administer grants from the fund in phases, initially to help address immediate needs and then through the short-term and longer-term impact of the pandemic outbreak and recovery. What is involved to convince the atheist, whom God declares as “The fool has said in his heart,‘There is no God’” (Psalm 14:1)?
God presented the answer in a broad sweeping statement – “The heav- ens declare the glory of God;And the firmament shows His handiwork” (Psalm 19:1). Although the atheist confidently asserts there is no God, the truth is God has put the sense of His existence in the spirit of each of us. This is evident from the Bible itself.
The structure of books usually begin with a preface and an introduc- tion. Primarily this is to become acquainted with the author, answering “Who is He/she?” and the purpose of writing the book. In stark con- trast, the Bible begins telling us nothing about who God is or what He is? “In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth” (Genesis 1:1). It assumes we know that God exists. Why would God begin His book in such fashion? Because He has put a sense of His existence in each person.
So then why do people deny His existence? The first reason is the re- bellious attitude of fallen man.In short, man likes to be his own god. Eve revealed that in the garden and Satan convinced her God is a self- ish con-man (Gen 3:5). The truth is Satan’s primary tool is deception (Revelation 12:9), seeking to destroy everyone (1 Peter 5:8). Man has adapted Satan’s tool of deception. First and foremost though is how people deceive themselves. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked....”(Jeremiah 17:9). Jeremiah recorded Judah’s self deception. The people thought as long as God’s temple was standing, they had God’s favor. Jeremiah warned them at stood temple – “Do not trust in these lying words, saying, ‘The temple of the Lord...the temple of the Lord are these....and then come and stand before Me....and say, ‘We are delivered to do all these abominations’?” (Jer 7:4, 10).
Even after the temple and Jerusalem had been destroyed, the people refused to believe God. When they kidnaped Jeremiah, they wanted God’s advice what to do (Jer 42:1-3). Then refused God’s answer(43:1- 4). Additionally, they continued their idolatry for which the nation was destroyed (44:15-23) and that they too would die (44:11-14). Indeed, denying the reality of the sovereign God is perilous and the atheist is good at it.

WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 2, 2020 • SALE TIME: 10:00 AM
AUCTIONEERS’ NOTE: This auction awards an opportunity to purchase a parcel or parcels of Choice High Caliber Blinsmon Township, Moody County, SD land that is situated in the “Garden Spot” of Eastern SD. This auction is especially noteworthy as the parcel being offered for sale has been in owned by the Quissel/Olson family for approx. 99 years with ownership dating back to 1921, thus this auction presents an opportunity of a lifetime to purchase this prime cropland. This auction includes choice land with a very high percentage tillable, superb soils with a substantial amount of drain tile installed and is located in one of the most highly regarded agri- cultural areas of Eastern SD. The existing farmstead could be a very nice site for es- tablishment of a new home, as it is situated lying adjacent to a hard surfaced county highway, has a mature grove and is serviced by rural water and electricity. If you are in the market for a parcel of land with a variety of excellent amenities that has acreage housing potential, along with land that would serve as an excellent addition to a row crop farming operation or as an investment, you will want to inspect this property and make plans to be in attendance at this auction. Chuck Sutton
Three words best describe this parcel of land – Choice, Choice, Choice! The land being offered for sale on this auction consists of a parcel of land with an extremely high per- centage tillable, with the nontillable acres comprised primarily of the farmstead, trees and roads and is inclusive of some choice high caliber cropland with some extremely high caliber soils. The improvements on the acreage site include a older 1 1⁄2 story 3 bed- room home that is in poor condition and some other small buildings – essentially the existing structures are in “tear down” condition and are being sold in “AS IS” condition – although with the superb location of the acreage site, the existing mature trees on the farmstead and the fact that the property is presently serviced with electricity and by Big Sioux Community Rural Water, this could well be an excellent acreage site location for a new rural home. Ac- cording to FSA information, this farm has approximately 155.75 acres of cropland, with the nontillable acres are comprised of remnants of a +/- 6 acre farmstead, with an FSA 76.2 acre corn base with a 151 bu. PLC yield and a 73.5 acre soybean base with a 47 bu. PLC yield and is enrolled under the ARC County election of the USDA farm program. There has been a Certified Wetland Determination completed on this land and subsequently in 2012 there was approx. 18,075 feet of 5” and 6” drain tile installed in this land by Evans Farm Drainage and Construction which has enhanced the farmability of this land. According to the Moody County Assessor, this farm has an overall soil rating of .895; similarly information obtained from Surety Agri-Data, Inc. indicates this land has a soil rating of 89.7 - with the predominate soils comprised of Class I and II soils. The general topography of this land is level to level to gently rolling with excellent eye appeal. The RE taxes payable in 2020 on this farm were $5,693.58. This property has potential to fulfill the needs of a variety of buyers including those looking for a rural construction housing site and/or extremely high quality productive cropland to add to their farming operation or their investment portfolio. This is an extremely high caliber parcel of land that truly must be seen to be appreciated!
