FOR THE LOVE OF ANTIQUES (AND MORE)
Another year has gone by, and the 52nd Brookings Summer Arts Festival is just around the corner. It’ll be fun visiting all the art booths, sampling the amazing array of foods offered, taking in a wide variety of entertainment, visiting the Living History area, perusing the Edibles and Naturals area, seeing the fun the kids are having in the children’s area. And don’t forget about the antiques area! Nine of the ten booths will be there from last year, and there will be one new one to explore.
The great thing about the Antiques area is that it’s different every year. You never know what you’re going to find. So come reintroduce yourself to the ten antiques dealers, and if you’re
lucky you might find something to complete a collection or even start a new one! The Antique dealers for this year are listed below.

WELCOME TO THE 52ND ANNUAL
BROOKINGS SUMMER ARTS FESTIVAL!
Entertainment
Dennis Warner & the D’s. When Peter, Paul and Mary recorded “Leaving on a Jet Plane”, who knew that the writer of that song would become a household name just a few short years later, John Denver. During the 1970’s, John released an astonishing 15 albums and was ranked #8 among the best-selling artists of the decade. When he passed away in 1997, he left behind a legacy of 33 albums and singles certified Gold and Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America. A few of his hits include, “Annie’s Song”, “Back Home Again”, “Take Me Home, Country Roads” and “Thank God I’m a Country Boy”. Please join us for a special concert celebrating John’s music as presented by Dennis Warner & the D’s. Warner is not an imitator or impersonator, but an accomplished performer who will share stories and explore John’s music in his own wonderful, distinctive style. Warner has released 11 albums and a popular children’s book during a career that’s brought him throughout all 50 states and beyond. His latest release “Pilot Me” was one of the top 10 albums of the month for August 2020 according to the FAI folk music world radio charts. “John Denver’s Legacy: A lot of the hits and a few lesser known gems” will be a fun, unique event with the audience encouraged to sing and clap along to some of the greatest music ever written. warnersongs.com
The Rough & Tumble. The Rough & Tumble are a folk/Americana duo, consisting of Mallory Graham & Scott Tyler. Forming in 2011, they’ve spent the last 8 years full time in a 16ft camper with two big dogs and one hamster. At home in festival settings, listening rooms and house concerts, their commanding stage presence, engaging performances and affecting songwriting won them Listening Room Network’s Artist of the Year in 2019 and the Independent Music Awards Americana Song of the Year for their song “The Hardest Part. 2021’s We're Only Family If You Say So, an album about what it means to be family and then to lose it, had singles debuting on American Songwriter and The Bluegrass Situation and has been embraced by fans for its stark honesty, unique storytelling and well-crafted melodies. The band now resides in New Hampshire and has a new album, Only This Far, due out in 2023. theroughandtumble.com
Mogen’s Heroes. Mogen’s Heroes is a fine-tuned trio that has been pleasing Midwestern audiences since 1978. Like the South Dakota weather, they are apt to change styles instantly. Founded by Waubay, SD native John Mogen (keyboards), the group also features Redfield, SD native Bill Hoffman (drums) and Wagner, SD native Denny Gale (guitar). Gale’s writing style stems from three decades with The Associated Press. Hoffman’s incredibly versatile vocals highlight the Heroes’ harmonies, and Mogen’s one-third of a century in music education rounds out this trio’s personality. Mogen’s Heroes love to entertain a variety of listeners. This threesome thoroughly enjoys having fun with music, blending humor with harmonies to please all ages. The band was inducted into the SD Rock and Roll Music Association Hall of Fame in 2018, and Mogen received the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2022.
Mama Said String Band. Mama Said String Band is an instant classic, since 2016 they’ve been bringing their own brand of the grassroots music you’re so used to hearing to stages everywhere. Based out of Louisville, KY, Mama Said String Band brings a refreshing reinvention to Bluegrass, Folk and Americana while focusing on vocal harmonies and contemporary instrumentation. They bring big, relatable emotions and honest songwriting to every show, leaving fans always wanting more. mamasaidstringband.com
Phil Baker. For over 30 years, Phil Baker has used music to educate, entertain, and enrich the lives of young people. Phil Baker is one of the most innovative and respected songwriters shaping children's music today. Known for his signature style - a red guitar, heartfelt lyrics, catchy tunes, and quality musicianship and production - Baker involves the children throughout his show. He has dedicated his life to strengthening communities through music and performance and has made an indelible mark on South Dakota's music scene as well as its cultural landscape. His dynamic presentations tap the potential of today's youth, inviting them to make a difference in their families, schools, and communities, while his infectious ability to connect with an audience through songs and activities leaves young people with the impression they can help make the world a better place. South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism, and the National Endowment for the Arts. philbakermusic.com

The festival started in 1972 with a pioneer theme because of its location, and this area has become a mainstay of the BSAF. In 1976, as part of the National Bicentennial Celebration,
a special area was set aside for historic traders and a muzzleloader target shoot. In 1984, the target shooting stopped and frontier crafts became the main attraction of the Living History Area.
The Brookings Renegade Muzzleloaders Club will be manning the main gate and guiding the parking for the valid handicapped vehicles. The Silver Creek Mavericks will greet exhibitors at the West gate to direct them to their parking areas and assist with large parcel pick-up. The 13th U.S. Infantry/Fort Dakota will hold a brief flag raising ceremony in front of the Bandshell both Saturday and Sunday at 10am.

Paul Imholte. If it has strings, Paul Imholte probably plays it. Paul performs traditional and original music on nearly a dozen string instruments. Raised in central Minnesota, his music portrays both historical American themes and contemporary Midwestern life. Paul’s featured instrument is the hammered dulcimer. In shows for children and families, Paul combines both traditional American folk songs with original songs. He encourages the audience to join in by singing along and by doing somewhat silly movements to songs. As a stroller, Paul fills a cart full of instruments and performs across the festival grounds. His artistry is based on his love for acoustical string instruments and sharing that passion with audiences. paulimholte.com
Curtis & Loretta. Curtis & Loretta’s music comes straight from the heart. The husband and wife duo’s extraordinary harmonies and proficiency on a parade of stringed instruments create an alluring frame for their poignant original songs, and carefully chosen traditional pieces from the British Isles, America, and beyond. The current menagerie includes Celtic harp, mandocello, mandolin, guitars, clawhammer banjo, and National steel ukulele. South Dakota Arts Council support is provided with funds from the State of South Dakota, through the Department of Tourism, and the National Endowment for the Arts. curtisandloretta.com
Brookings Area Community Band. The BACB has, since 1984, been playing Sunday evening concerts during the summer months at Pioneer Park at 7:30 pm. The 100 member band, directed by Dr. David Reynolds, presents themed concerts. Each concert provides a variety of music and family fun including complimentary treats and featuring a children's march.

Is your back pain starting to interfere or even threaten your ability to work?
DA tells about his experience with Advanced Spinal Decompression Therapy at Murray Chiropractic: "I saw Dr. Murray's sign about relief from low back pain without surgery. I had a new job and couldn't be off work for 6-12 weeks after surgery. The pain was affecting my work and I had to find help. Lordex was one of the best things I've ever done! Before having surgery, I recommend you try Lordex first."

EARLY DEADLINE
Due to the Independence Day holiday, we will be closed July 3-4.
DEADLINE for the July 4th issue of The Town & Country SHOPPER will be Thursday, June 29th at Noon.
Get your ads in early to avoid disappointment.
Recently, the SPLC declared Mothers for Liberty, a parental rights ad- vocacy, as an extremist hate group. However, they did not define what it means to hate, nor just what it is about advocating for parents rights re- garding their children is hateful.
First parents. God has mandated parents, i.e., a man and woman mar- ried to each other should have children – “God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them....God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply....” (Genesis 1:27-28). Who has the responsibility to rear the children?
Second government. In fact God has mandated only two functions to government – a system of civil and criminal justice and national defense. God uses both to maintain an orderly society and establish and destroy na- tions (when they are so evil in God’s sight) (Jeremiah 18:7-10; Romans 13:1-7). So who rears the kids?
Hillary asserted it takes a village. Bologne! This couched notion of a “village,” inferring that someone in addition to, or other than, parents has child rearing responsibility is not new. In his, The Culture of Narcissism: American Life in an Age of Diminishing Expectations, Charles Lasch cited two educators from 1918 – “Once the school had mainly to teach the elements of knowledge; now it is charged with the physical, mental and social training of the child as well.” Several decades earlier, Ellen Richards, the founder of modern social work, asserted that “in a social re- public, the child as a future citizen is an asset of the state, not the prop- erty of its parents.”
Dutch theologian, statesman, and philosopher Abraham Kuyper said societal breakdown was inevitable whenever a God-ordained authority either abandoned or exerted authority outside of its Godordained sphere. Seems that both has been occurring in the USA. That plague gave rise to Mothers for Liberty that the SPLC says is an extremist hate group be- cause insistence of parental rights over their own children.
In fact, God has ordained that as a parental responsibility. God has given that responsibility solely to the parents “And you, fathers, do not provoke your children to wrath, but bring them up in the training and ad- monition of the Lord” (Ephesians 6:4).
