Page 12 March 11, 2025 The Town & Country SHOPPER www.TownAndCountryShopper.net Email: [email protected]    We continue our response to a local writer’s fear about the Christian Nationalism movement and the potential to establish a religious theocracy vs the secular government, based on a survey by the Public Religion Research Institute. However, the survey failed to ask about the meaning of “Christian.” After Pres. Reagan declared that the USA is a Christian nation, a young man’s response to a journalist asking about the meaning of Christian was “to be a patriot” (reflects biblical ignorance). In this series, our purpose is to show that Christian Nationalism is not New Testament Christianity. America was off to a rocky start with only 40% of the 100 pilgrims (1620), seeking to worship God independent of the Church of England (Anglican). Although it is often stated that the USA is a Christian nation, that is something of a misnomer. It is better said that the colonial settlers had biblical based faith which influenced the founding of the nation – USA. Last week, we considered that New England taxation on churches was an application of the Old Testament, (principle of tithing) (Demanding Liberty; Brandon O’Brien). The battle to overcome taxation lasted over 50 years during what is called the Great Awakening in the mid 1700s. Justification for taxation to support churches was presented in a sermon by Edward Dorr in 1765 supporting a misinterpretation of Isaiah chapter 49. Most ministers of that era read the entire Bible as a continuous applicable narrative. Several years earlier after Isaac Backus’(Baptist) mother was jailed for refusing to pay the tax (1752), he began to see the difference between the Old and New Testaments and wrote (1756) a booklet focusing on the allegory of the bond woman and free woman, showing the difference (Galatians 4:21- 31). The struggle between these two opposing positions was the seed bed for Backus’ advocacy for religious liberty. At the same time, colonial government tried to regulate the expansion of Baptist churches by the “certificate law.” It required new Baptist congregations to have the endorsement of three old Baptist congregations that existed before the Great Awakening (before 1720). The opposition also had a new tool – education. The Baptist ministers were “unlearned.” Schools that existed did not endorse Baptist beliefs, so Brown University, the first Baptist school was founded (1764). Backus was on the board for 35 years.
