That the battle for pure New Testament Christianity has been continuous through the ages. In the modern era, the Renaissance of the 1500s fostered the ancient Greek paganism. The influence of the protestant reformation in the 1600s slowed that influence of pagan thinking. However during the 1700s the Enlightenment brought paganism to the fore again and had a con- tinuing impact in the 1800s and 1900s.
About 1600 the Bible believing pilgrims came to the new land seeking re- ligious freedom. About 100 years later university records reveal hardly any student believed the Bible was God’s word. Near the end of the 18th century, the French revolution, fostering religious scepticism, had significant influ- ence on our founding fathers. Near the beginning of the 19th century, the conflict of unbelief (including atheism, agnosticism, and pagansim) and bib- lical religion noticeably began and grew during the next 50 years. Not only did the nation expand territorially, but the plurality faiths.
On the one hand scepticism was well entrenched. On the other, an awak- ening resulting in the Christian Evidence Movement began. In 1795, Timo- thy Dwight became president of Yale. Previous administrations forbid the discussion about the Bible. Senior students tested Dwight, asking, “Are the Scriptures of the Old and New Testaments the Word of God?” To their sur- prise he formed debate teams – their choice which position to debate. In re- futing the infidel arguments, Dwight’s biographer revealed his impact. He”left the stoutest infidel in the audience utterly confounded. His bolts had the effect of lightning upon the whole college.” He preached for six months on the inspiration of the Bible and began a teaching series – “Evidences of Divine Inspiration.” He essentially spawned in academia the consideration of the Bible as eternally vital for each and everyone of us. For the next cen- tury and more, the significant impact of the Bible would upon the USA. As we opened, we conclude --What has been the influence on each of us? What happened in the 19th and 20th centuries that has bought the current culture to the fore?”
