UNITED WAY GETS A BIG ‘THUMBS UP’
Brookings Area United Way has once again been recognized by United Way Worldwide for meeting membership requirements for 2019. To meet membership requirements, Brookings Area United Way must adhere to a locally developed and adopted statement to ensure volunteers and staff broadly reflect the diversity of the community it serves, undergo an annual audit conducted by an independent certi- fied public accountant, adhere to a locally developed and adopted code of ethics for volunteers and staff which include provisions for ethical management, publicity, fundraising practices, and full and fair disclosure, and represent itself as a United Way in accordance with all United Way Worldwide trademark standards and requirements.
Heidi Gullickson, Executive Director of Brookings Area United Way, says, “We are excited to be part of the United Way network. We will continue to be advocates in the community and provide the resources needed to make Brookings County stronger.”
By fulfilling the requirements for membership, Brookings Area United Way is a verified United Way within the Worldwide network and is pro- vided greater access to resources, marketing efforts, and opportuni- ties to make an impact. This network allows the chance to bring these resources back locally to Brookings Area United Way funded partners to help realize their full potential.
Brianna Doran, Executive Assistant, emphasized how exciting it is to stay involved in the worldwide network, “[Brookings Area] United Way is a philanthropy marketplace. We are not just fundraisers; we bring these international and national resources in the United Way World- wide Network back to the community to allow our Funded Partners and other local nonprofits realize their full potential. Whatever problem they’re facing or just need more information on, we can help.”
The Brookings Area United Way thanks the generosity of the Brook- ings area to continue to surround our community’s problems and find creative solutions through collaborations and strong partnerships.

Thrivent Financial teams up with Samaritan’s Feet to host a Back to School Shoe Drive August 1 - 30, 2019
At Thrivent, we believe a key part of being wise with your gifts is sharing them. That’s why we’ve teamed up with Samaritan’s Feet to help bring shoes to children in need. A new pair of shoes can help a child start the new year with confidence – confidence in the classroom, with their friends, and to pursue their dreams.
Join us as we provide new shoes to kids in need by bringing new children’s athletic shoes and dropping them off at our office, 601 4th Street Suite 103. We are available from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm, Monday – Friday. Call Michele Smith at 605-692-6643 or email [email protected] with questions.
Monetary donations can be directed to

Attracting and Feeding Hummingbirds
The most common species of Hummingbirds is the ruby-throated hummingbird. Their feisty, lively nature makes them fun to watch at the feeder as they spar with others for the nectar.
Hummingbirds love the color red, so it helps to plant red Geraniums or other red flowers under or near the feeder to attract them to the area. Be sure to hang the feeders high so the birds are out of the reach of luring cats waiting to pounce. It is also nice to place a tomato cage below the feeder to serve as a roost for chicks the parents may decide to bring to the feeder.
Do not use store bought red nectar because it weakens the eggshells and causes many chicks to be lost. A homemade recipe for Hummingbird Nectar is a 1:4 ratio of water and table sugar. Boil the sugar and water for several minutes to help detour mold from growing in the feeder, then let it cool before using it.
Make sure to clean and refill the feeder at least once a week because bacteria can grow. Sometimes bugs or ants get caught in the feeder and that contaminates the nectar and it is best to clean everything out and refill it.
Humming Birds eat 5 to 14 meals each hour. They consume half their body weight each day and that is about the weight of half a walnut shell.
They use spider silk and plant down for a large portion of their nest interior with lichens, moss and plants covering the outer portion to help hide it from predators

In the USA today absurdities regarding religion, er... uh... specifically Christianity as a state religion, abound. The charge? A cross here or nativ- ity scene there violates the 1st amendment, somehow government estab- lishes a state religion called Christianity. That stretches credulity, it questions the accuser’s capacity to reason. Fact: It’s hate toward Christen- dom. But is Christianity the state religion? Or is it a theistic nation or an atheistic nation? Check history!
The US founders for the most part were theists, i.e., they believed in a liv- ing supreme (divine) being in control of the existence of nations. For ex- ample, George Washington referred to God 146 times in his writings. Nearly a century later after the civil war President Cleveland stated, “I know there is a Supreme Being who rules the affairs of men....” Yet, they did not ad- vocate a national religion.
That the Bible was the founders guide, is revealed in their writings, e.g., “Suppose a nation in some distant Region should take the Bible for their only law Book, and every member should regulate his conduct by the pre- cepts there exhibited! Every member would be obliged in conscience, to temperance, frugality, and industry; to justice, kindness, and charity towards his fellow men; and to piety, love, and reverence toward Almighty God ... What a Eutopia, what a Paradise would this region be.” (Diary and Auto- biography of John Adams, V. III, p. 9).
The mandatory Christian Evidence university courses in the 19th and early 20th centuries reflect the importance of the Bible in the national life, yet no state church! Roger Sherman, one of the founders of the US constitution and congressman, stated, “Congress has no power to make any religious establishments”(Congress, August 19, 1789).
Although congress has not authored a state religion or church, is it possi- ble we have accepted a Trojan horse via the education system, that as a peo- ple we are practicing that religion and do not consciously acknowledge that we are Humanists. And that government at all levels unwittingly submit to this religion via legislation, starting with our public education system for nearly a century?
"The battle for humankind's future must be waged and won in the public school classroom by teachers who correctly perceive their role as the pros- elytizers of a new faith....The classroom must and will become an arena of conflict between the old and the new – the rotting corpse of Christianity and the new faith of Humanism." (John Dunphy, "A Religion for a New Age," The Humanist – Jan/Feb 1983, p.26). If the Foundations be de- stroyed...

Just to name a few - an extraordinary location, a one owner home with many excellent features and an attached oversized double garage, an additional garage for additional storage, a yard with many established trees and shrubs, a view of Lake Herman and last but not least an owned lake access on the West side of Territorial Road with a staircase, dock and lake access. The residence on this property includes a one owner home built for the Barker’s by Craig Williams Construction in 1993/94 with approx. 1,456 sq. ft. on the upper level and a substantial portion finished on the lower level; the main floor is comprised of a covered front porch and front entrance to a living room with a vaulted ceiling, a gas fireplace and coat closet; a dining room with a bay window and built-in china cabinet; a kitchen/dining area with a sliding patio door to a South wooden deck, oak cabinets with Corian counter- tops, a built-in desk and an electric stove with microwave above, a refrigerator and built-in dishwasher; a master bedroom with closet and attached master bath with a tub-shower unit; a hallway with closet; an open staircase that accesses the lower level; a 1⁄2 bath and a main floor laundry area with a closet and side walk door to a spacious attached double garage (approx. 28’x34’) with a finished interior, 2 overhead garage doors with electric openers, a natural gas wall heater and last but not least - an interior staircase that provides a 2nd access from the garage to the lower level. The lower level of the home is nicely finished and includes a family room with a gas fireplace, a bedroom with egress window and spacious double deep closet; a 3⁄4 bath with shower and linen closet; and a large room utilized by Dan Barker as an archery shop/office with 2 closets, egress window and walk door from the lower level to the garage – this space could also be easily converted to bedroom use, providing a 3rd bedroom; a utility room with a natural gas boiler providing hot water heat in the home, an AO Smith gas hot water heater, a water sof- tener, a Nutone central vacuum system and a 200 amp breaker electrical system (that shows a final in- spection date of 9/19/94) and there also is a central air conditioning system servicing the home. The exterior of the home has a combination of brick and cedar siding and asphalt shingles. Additionally there is an unattached garage (approx. 18’x26’) with an overhead door and electric opener, concrete floor, elec- trical, a steel roof and cedar siding. The residence is in a pleasant parklike setting with an established lawn and many trees and shrubs and is in a semi-private setting as the property is situated between Ter- ritorial Road and Prairie Village. The purchase of this home comes with a parcel of land providing private lake access that has approx. 50’ of frontage on Lake Herman - lying on the West side of Territorial Road that has a recently rebuilt staircase leading from Territorial Road to the lake - additionally there is a dock and electrical near the lake. A property with all of the amenities that are encompassed in this property is extremely rare and this auction provides the opportunity to purchase a rather exclusive residential lakeside property. Come take a look for yourself as this is a most impressive property!
