BROOKINGS CHAMBER TO CO-HOST MIDWEST ECONOMIC FORECAST SUMMIT
The Brookings Area Chamber of Commerce is proud to partner with the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber to bring the Midwest Economic Fore- cast Summit to our region on Tuesday, February 8, 2022. Brookings will act as a host site for the summit, giving our regional partners the opportunity to gather and watch as it is live streamed from Fargo.
This summit is the first of two that the Brookings Chamber will co-host, the second being a Cybersecurity and Technology Summit on Tuesday, August 2, 2022. These summits will convene regional and national industry experts and thought leaders for crucial conversations on significant regional topics.
The Midwest Economic Forecast Summit is in partnership with chambers of commerce from across the Upper Midwest and will bring together leaders and experts to engage in a timely, in-depth and holistic discussion. Keynote speakers for the event will be: • Neel Kashkari, President and CEO of the Federal Reserve Bank of Minneapolis • Dr. Scott Beaulier, Dean of business at North Dakota State University • Commissioner Steve Grove, Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development. In addition, Dr. Joe Santos, Professor of Economics for the Ness School of Management at South Dakota State University, will offer a live component.
Kashkari will address the economy on a national scale and touch on the im- pact of COVID-19, federal recovery dollars, housing and workforce chal- lenges, and more. Dr. Beaulier has spent his career actively engaged in understanding and advocating for policies that foster dynamic, vibrant economies that best allow businesses and entrepreneurs to thrive. He will discuss how policies are integral to our economic success, and how people – innovative, creative and dedicated business leaders – are the lifeblood of any economy. Commissioner Grove is focused on empowering the growth of the Minnesota economy, and under his leadership, the department works on growing the state’s workforce, closing the opportunity gap, and providing businesses and startups the support they need to grow and thrive in Min- nesota’s economy. In addition to these three keynote speakers there will be panel discussions featuring leaders in agriculture, energy, healthcare, hospi- tality, manufacturing, and technology.
Our nation recently faced a global recession, record U.S. unemployment and extreme economic uncertainty. This is an opportunity to learn about regional and national trends, understand our biggest threats, examine factors that keep our area competitive, and hear from leaders across various sectors that are the backbone of our economy.
Kaitlyn Luebbert, Director of Programming and Special Events at the Brook- ings Area Chamber of Commerce, said “The changes in our economy bring both challenges and opportunities. It’s important to keep our local industry leaders up to date on current and future trends. We expect this to be an ed- ucational and valuable experience for everyone, from business owners to stu- dents and everyone in between.
Developing and maintaining a vibrant economy is essential to the continued growth of the Midwest; we hope you join us for this new, major event series and important discussion.
Midwest Economic Forecast Summit Tuesday, February 8, 8AM – 12PM, Swiftel Event Center
Who is invited: Members of the public, chamber members, business owners and operators, professionals in the aforementioned industries, college stu- dents and members of the media.

Why are My Plants Sticky and have Little
Brown Bumps on Them?
By David F. Graper, SDSU Extension Horticulture Specialist Emeritus Brookings Area Master Gardeners
Houseplants can become infested with a variety of insects as well as mites but one of the most serious pests are scale. To put it bluntly, scale really suck! They actually do suck sap from plants to collect the sugars in it as food. They have a tiny stylet that they insert into the plant, almost like a mosquito sucking blood. The digestive system of a scale insect is not that efficient so a lot of the sugar in the sap gets excreted as waste. This sticky waste is called honeydew. It may ac- cumulate on the plant’s leaves and stem, on the pot, windowsill or
even on the floor.
So why is this potentially such a serious insect pest? It may attack just about any kind of plant. It multiplies rapidly and spreads easily. It is often multiplies on plants undetected until the infestation is severe. The only life stage of the insect that is really susceptible to treatment is the crawler or first stage that hatches from the eggs. The crawlers are so tiny they are barely visible to the unaided eye. After that each young insect develops a waxy body covering, making them nearly im- pervious to most treatments that kill by contact. You may read about using an old tooth brush or cotton swab to get the final adult stage in- sects that look like brown bumps off the leaves or stems, but often those are dead females, the younger stages are much harder to see so many of those will remain and continue to develop and multiply.
The best control of scale is prevention. Be VERY careful of bringing new plants into your collection unless you examine them carefully for scale and other insects or disease. If you see scale, do not even bring the plant home. If you don’t find any, that’s good, but you should still quarantine them away from your other plants for several weeks so you can check them over again before moving them near other plants. If you handled plants with scale, do not handle other healthy plants until you wash up and maybe changed your clothes. You might be bringing scale crawlers along with you and could potentially infest healthy plants.
Carefully scout your plant collection and look for the adult scale. Often most people don’t know they have a problem until they see the hon- eydew. While it is usually clear, sticky and shiny, it may also look black because sooty mold likes to grow on it. Be sure to check those plants in the back of your collection that might not get very close scrutiny on a regular basis. If you find an infested plant, carefully remove it from its spot in your collection if it is near any other plants, maybe within 3’. If it is badly infested, place it in a garbage bag and get it out of the house. I have found that about 4 hours outside when the temperature is below 0 is quite effective in killing the scale. And even if it doesn’t kill the scale, the plant will look so bad after it thaws out you won’t want it anymore anyway.
If you want to try treating it, an insecticidal soap, ultrafine horticultural oil, Neem oil or similar product may kill the earliest stages of the scales as it clogs up their capacity to breath and may break down their waxy coating. If you can find a systemic insecticide that is labeled for houseplants, that might knock them back, but likely only for a while. Initially many people think they can cure a scale problem. But often they soon find out that they have spread to other plants. In the end, instead of just throwing out one plant they may have to get rid of a lot more plants to finally get it under control.

This kind of success isn’t an accident, as it only happens with an extensive understanding of market trends and conditions, along with a wealth of expertise gained from decades of experience and a reputation of success for being a leader in the auction industry, as our motto states “SUCCESSFUL AUCTIONS DON’T JUST HAPPEN, THEY’RE PLANNED!
Questions continue to be presented to us about the strength of the land market, it has been our observation that the land market surged upward throughout 2021, achieving record prices in many cases. A big part of the equation as to why land values remain strong, is that in most areas there continues to be an inadequate supply of land available for purchase, hence demand outpaces supply. Furthermore, low interest rates, strong grain prices and remarkable yields created positive stimulation to the land market - This is especially true for high quality agricultural cropland. It is our belief that farmland values at the end of 2021 and going forward into 2022 are VERY STRONG!
At the close of 2021 we witnessed that many land buyers remain “Sold on the Market” – especially those that had strong equity positions, as there remain many individuals that are anxious to invest in agricultural land as a safe haven for in- vestment of their dollars. One key factor remains – That being that the economic theory of “Supply and Demand” remains in full force and effect, as it appears that there continues to be an unbalanced demand for high quality cropland, as there seems to remain a greater supply of qualified buyers in the marketplace, than there is land available for purchase. AS FOR 2022 – It is our opinion - that if there are no major adverse economic influences, if interest rates remain at attractive levels, if crop production remains average to above average and if commodity prices don’t erode significantly, we foresee prospects for continued strength in the land market. Land sale results in 2021 achieved “Record and Near Record Highs” in many instances, rivaling previous all-time peak values achieved in the period from 2012 to 2014 and even surpassing those levels in some areas and establishing some NEW RECORD HIGHS!
In 2021 we recorded 7 sales over $15,000.00 per acre – the high being +/-37 acres in Lyon County Iowa at $39,750.00 per acre, 24% of our sales fell in a range from $10,000.00 to $14,999.00 per acre, 22.5% of our sales fell in a range from $7,500.00 to $9,999.00 per acre, 24% fell in a range from $5,000.00 to $7,499.00 per acre 12% fell in a range from $2,500.00 to $4,999.00 per acre and the remainder including some west river and more marginal grassland sold below those levels. One recent article sourced from the Federal Reserve District Surveys of Agricultural Conditions indicated a one year change through the third quarter of 2021 that regional land values were up 23% in SD, 26% in Minnesota, 28% in Iowa and 16% in Nebraska.
In summary, IT IS A GREAT TIME TO SELL! - As the Demand for High Quality Land and Pasture Outpaces Supply. As we begin 2022, it appears that the mindset of farm operators and investors alike in the market for land have a relatively high degree of optimism and remain competitive in their pursuit and acquisition of land, and that said - the auction method of marketing in conjunction with our knowledge and professional experience creates a forum that exposes your property to the maximum number of qualified buyers, resulting in the true “Fair Market Value” and “Top Dollar” for your property. Our sales are conducted in a manner where there are no “Buyers Premiums” or “Hidden Fees!”
A Sincere “Thanks” to all of the sellers we had the privilege to serve, a big Thank You also, to all of the buyers, bidders and others who attended our real estate and personal property auctions, and especially to those who continue to spread the accolades concerning our auction services and staff, our professionalism, experience, reputation and integrity. Again, THANK YOU ALL for your business and continued support! We look forward to putting our experience to work for you in 2022.
These auctions were conducted by Chuck Sutton and Jared Sutton and their primary associates which included Wayne Bessman, Dean Stoltenberg, Terry Haiar, Tom and Ted Souvignier, Burlage & Peterson Auctioneers, Dan Uthe, Dean Gulbranson and Mark Joens of Fischer-Rounds Real Estate in Pierre, SD, as well as Other Cooperating Brokers, Auctioneers and Associates.

Our firm has grown to be recognized as a leader in the auction industry. Furthermore, auctions have become the marketing method of choice for farmland, being the most tried and true method of marketing with a proven record of results surpassing such methods as sealed bids and negotiated sales, with auctions providing the “Ultimate Marketplace” - by maximizing the number of prospective buyers and also allows the seller to set the terms of sale and puts all buyers on an equal playing field, where all parties have a fair and equal opportunity to bid and buy.
Acre per Acre, Item per Item, Head per Head and Dollar per Dollar, a professionally managed and conducted auction is the most efficient method by which a seller may merchandise and obtain “TOP DOLLAR” for their property.

The country is a mess because personal lives are a mess. In 2021 the American Worldview Inventory surveyed the worldview of four generations. It revealed 43% of millennials (born 1984-2002) stated they either don’t know, don’t care, or don’t believe God exists. That is a 15% drop in two generations.30% of Americans believe there is no way to know if God exists. Yet, 40% of Americans believe a per- son has no intrinsic value. Are we becoming a nation of agnostics and atheists?
Further, 31% of teens and young adults “strongly agree” that what is “morally right and wrong changes over time, based on society. That is a 6% increase in just three years. This is the influence of Secular Humanism, the major tenet of which is each person is his own god and makes his own rules, only to be changed by one’s own desire. Man has always loved being his own god. Over 3000 years ago,God warned via Moses, “You shall not at all do as we are doing here today—every man doing whatever is right in his own eyes” (Deuteronomy 12:8). God stated the result of such rebellion – ”There is a way that seems right to a man, But its end is the way of death” (Proverbs 14:12). That death is separation from God, ultimately be- comes a nation’s death.
This attitude is revealed in 65% of teens and young adults who be- lieve that “many religions can lead to eternal life.” That is a 7% in- crease in just three years. Note there is no source confirming many ways to eternal life. It is simply man making his own religion.
The survey revealed this in the rejection of Jesus as the only way. Although half of all boomers(1946-64) believe they will go to Heaven only because they confessed their sins and accepted Jesus as their Savior; 26% of Gen X (1965-1983); 16% of millennials. Yet, 69% of Americans call themselves Christians! Huh?
Even more saddening is Americans younger than 55 are more likely to distrust the Bible. Are we a floundering nation? Not know- ing what is truth? Jesus said He is the way, the truth, and the life (John14:6). We will review His claim. If so, it is your only personal hope and the nation’s only hope.
