However, the survey failed to ask about the meaning of “Christian.” After Pres. Reagan declared that the USA is a Christian nation, a young man’s response to a journalist asking about the meaning of Christian was “to be a patriot” (reflects biblical ignorance). In this series, our purpose is to show that Christian Nationalism is not New Testament Christianity, nor an advocacy for a state church or religion. Although it is said biblical religion began to be jettisoned upon the advent of the Enlightenment and the focus on scientific discoveries, the thrust was in the 20th century USA via Religious Humanism and later called Secular Humanism to hide its reality. Today’s Postmodernism (no such thing as truth) was spawned by the first Humanist Manifesto (1933). Christendom had been blind sided. One of its signers, Thomas Dewey (atheist), was a major promoter at Columbia University’s teachers college. Although it took decades eventually teachers throughout the land have been educated in his Humanistic thoughts. In the 1980s, while doing graduate studies, I was astounded at the number of well worn copies of each of his books in Auburn University’s library. Prospective teachers were being unwittingly indoctrinated. Harold Drummond wrote in Educational Leadership (Dec 1964), “The basic goal of education is change....This issue focuses upon the school as a change agent – and the specific focus is on changing people.” Humanism’s spokesman, John Dunphy wrote in his award-winning essay, “The Humanist” (1983), “The battle for humankind's future must be waged and won in the public school classroom by teachers who correctly perceive their role as the proselytizers of a new faith: A religion of humanity – utilizing a classroom instead of a pulpit to carry humanist values into wherever they teach.
