The Delta Dental Mobile Program was in Brookings recently and provided preventative and restorative dental care to children ages 0-21 years who did not have access to dental care. 50 children were seen and $38,385 in care was performed. The van will be back in Brookings again in August.
“We are so thankful for the partnership that we have with Delta Den- tal. A $2,500 investment from Brookings Area United Way is lever- aged to provide the much-needed care in our community. This program is one way that we work toward our mission of uniting peo- ple, sharing resources, inspiring hope and enriching lives. Funding programs that assist individuals and families to be healthy and safe is one of our core pillars of focus.” says Heidi Gullickson, Brookings Area United Way Executive Director.
The Brookings Area United Way partners with the Delta Dental Mo- bile Program thru funding, marketing efforts and coordinating the children’s appointments. To sign up for a visit, call the Helpline Cen- ter by dialing 211.

LE VENT DU NORD - RETURNS TO BROOKINGS!
The Brookings Arts Council is pleased to announce the return of Le Vent du Nord to Brookings on September 24 and 25th, 2019. This ensemble originally was introduced to the Brookings commu- nity through the Arts Midwest Worldfest Series, and now returns as a part of the 3M Community Vibrancy Series.
Discover a driving force in progressive folk music! Le Vent du
Nord captures the energy and mirth of a Saturday night kitchen

party, infusing old Québec, with a breath of fresh, cosmopolitan air.
Since its founding in 2002, Le Vent du Nord has won critical ac-

Planting And Growing Irises
The most important thing to know about irises is not to plant them too deep. Dig a hole approximately 4 inches deep and wide enough for the rhizome roots to be fanned out before covering them with dirt. If irises are planted too deep or they become root-bound they will not bloom.
Plant them at least a foot apart so the roots have room to grow and they don’t become root bound and entangled with surrounding iris. When you buy iris, check them for healthy roots prior to planting them in your beds. Cut the roots back to about two inches before planting.
In South Dakota it is best to plant iris in the early spring after the danger of frost has passed or early in the fall after they have finished blooming, so they have time to take root and get established prior to a hard frost. If they are planted too late there is a danger of winterkill because the iris will not be established enough to survive the cold winter.
After the irises are done blooming and prior to frost the tops should be cut back to approximately two inches high. It can be done in a fan style, so the greenery comes to a point like a fan or just straight across. This helps protect the rhizome from Leaf Borers that can bore into the foliage and winter over. When active they bore down the foliage into the rhizome where they hollow it out and kill the flower.
Never mulch irises close to the rhizome because it will cause root rot. They need to have soil that is well drained, so moisture doesn’t collect around them.
irises also need to be planted in a very sunny spot that is free of tree roots. A low PH fertilizer can be worked into the soil once in the spring and again in the
fallF.orasteadybloomoririsesthroughoutthegrowingseasonplantavarietyof them. Check with suppliers for varieties of early, mid and late blooming irises. There are also many different heights of irises: dwarf, mid and tall as well as reg- ular irises and bearded irises. It is also important to know where they were hy- bridized to know if they are hardy for the zone you live in. For example, irises that are hybridized in Texas or North Carolina may not survive harsh Dakota winters.

That there is always a pendulum of conflict between righteousness and unrighteousness is evident and has been since the pilgrims. And that pen- dulum swung more toward righteousness in the late 18th and into the 19th centuries. Atheism was also very visible and idealistic.
Robert Owen (atheist) purchased Harmony, Indiana in 1825 and re- named it New Harmony with the intent to form a utopian socialist com- munity. In the 3-4 years of its existence New Harmony went through five reorganizations. And because of Owen’s attack of freedom of religion and the lack of funds, the new atheist commune dissolved in 1829 and the land returned to private ownership. However, it serves to show the freedom of religion and the conflict between atheism faith and theistic faith.
This conflict was highlighted by the debate between Robert Owen and Alexander Campbell (Christian) in Cincinnati, Ohio in 1829. At the con- clusion on the last day, Campbell asked who favored Christianity. Out of the 1200 in attendance, all but three supported Christianity.
The conflict was heightened via Charles Darwin’s “On Origin of the Species” in 1859. It served as a springboard of organic evolution (nothing became something by itself) as the beginning of this universe vs the bib- lical six-day creation account by the God of heaven. However, Darwin even expressed reservation. “...a crowd of difficulties will have oc- curred....Some of them are so grave that to this day I can never reflect on them without being staggered; but, to the best of my judgment, the greater number are only apparent, and those that are real are not, I think, fatal to my theory.”
During Darwin’s day “most eminent living naturalists and geologists re- jected this view of the mutability of species,” i.e., they did not accept the possibility of mutations of a specie that could evolve into another specie. Darwin argued in the same paragraph from a negative rather than a posi- tive position. “It cannot be asserted that organic beings in a state of nature are subject to no variation; it cannot be proved that the amount of varia- tion in the course of long ages is a limited quantity; no clear distinction has been, or can be, drawn between species and well-marked varieties.” Dar- win essentially asserted that no one can prove that evolution did not occur. The burden rests upon the theorist to prove it happened by showing evi- dence, rather than assume it can happen even lacking evidence.
What would be the impact going into the 20th century. If the founda- tions be destroyed....
