Last week, we glanced at Jesus’ opening message to the Jews at the beginning of His three year announcement that He is the prophesied Messiah. He said, “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel” (Mark 1:15). John the bap- tizer was His one man advance team, preparing the folks for Jesus’ ar- rival. His announcement was “bear fruits worthy of repentance, and do not begin to say to yourselves, ‘We have Abraham as our father’” (Lk 3:8). Why was Abraham significant to the Jews?
As the Bible opens, God gave a three-fold promise to Abram (later named Abraham). (1) His descendants would become a great nation; (2) One descendant would be a blessing to every family on earth; (3) Their homeland would be Canaan (Genesis 12:2-3, 7; 15: 7,18-21; 22:15-18). After Abraham died (Gen 25:7-8), he was referred to in 63 verses in the Old Testament. Thirty-three of these verses refer to this promise being given to Abraham, then to Isaac (Abe’s son), and then to his son, Jacob, and to no one else. Some 400 years later, the nation would finally be formed from the descendants of the 12 sons of Jacob, each having a tribal territory in Canaan. Because God personally made the promise to the three, they are called Israel’s fathers nine times in Exodus and Deuteronomy. That the promise was first given to Abraham ( Gen 12:1- 3), the Jews rightly rightly him called Israel’s father. Further, his name was Abram, meaning “exalted father.” God changed it to Abraham – fa- ther of a multitude (father of nations) (Gen 17:5-6). That God did this prompted the Jews to call him “Father Abraham.”
Just months before inheriting the promised land for the newly formed nation, Moses, declared to the people, “For you are a holy people to the Lord your God; the Lord your God has chosen you to be a people for Himself, a special treasure above all the peoples on the face of the earth” (Deuteronomy 7:6).
It must have been a shock of earthquake proportions when John the baptizer admonished them to repent but don’t appeal to your 1400 year national heritage beginning with Father Abraham. John had been call- ing the people to repent. Now six months later, Jesus was also calling them to repent. What did they mean?
