PRG-P3: Highly effective catalyst for organic dyes removal
My STIE 10X10 Science & Technology Driver
ADVANCED MATERIALS
Problem Statement
Removal of persistent organic dyes from wastewater are difficult, not
cost effective and problematic.
Product Description
Degradation of organic pollutants using wide bandgap semiconductor
nanoparticles such as TiO2 and ZnO as photocatalysts have been
widely studied in the past few years. Nevertheless, application of these
photocatalysts in waste water treatments is hindered by many short
comings such as:
i. poor removal efficiency due to fast recombination of charge carriers,
ii. photocorrosion,
iii. high cost to develop visible light response photocatalysts as additional
processes such as doping or coupling of narrow bandgap semiconductor is
needed,
iv. reliability issue of re-engineered photocatalysts.
v. require optical excitation source such UV light in order to trigger the
photocatalysis process. In order words, no light → no photocatalysis process
→ no removal of organic compounds. As a consequence, it is highly desired to
seek for catalyst (i.e. not requires UV light or visible light) as an alternative to
TiO2 and ZnO. PRG-P3 is a suitable candidate due to its nontoxicity, low cost,
easy obtainment and most importantly its narrow bandgap (1.3eV) which allow
it to be activated by visible light and theoretically even infrared light. An excellent
removal of organic pollutants by PRG-P3, at least 10x more effective than TiO2
particles have been demonstrated.
Usefulness and Novelty
Can remove persistent dyes from wastewater under dark condition. Sunlight
or visible light is not required. 2. Low production cost and low operational
cost. 3. Highly effective. At least 10 times faster than the most common used
photocatalyst, i.e. TiO2 under identical test condition.

The Story of Khamdy - An Pictorial Narrative Teaching and
Parent Training Module for Autism
Problem Statement
Worldwide, many teachers lack knowledge about autism and the skills
to accommodate the learning needs of students with autism in their
schools. The Story of Khamdy, is a teacher and parent training resource
to empower teachers and parents to apply effective inclusive strategies to
support students with autism in inclusive learning environments.
Product Description
The Story of Khamdy offers a new method for parents and educators to learn
about strategies that help children with autism in inclusive environments. Through
a pictorial narrative method, parents and educators are introduced to more than
100 strategies to help children with autism communicate and learn effectively. The
strategies are introduced according to a solution-focused approach. Based on a
story centred on a boy named Khamdy, challenging learning situations are presented,
followed by solutions applied by fictional parent and teacher characters who support
Khamdy in inclusive learning environments. The training resource consists of a pictured
story book, an online self-paced learning platform, and a professional-facilitated training
program. Parents and educators who access to this training resource can learn about
challenging situations for children with autism, as well as evidence-based strategies to
help them in different social situations and developmental stages. This training resource
is also suitable for parents and educators of children with other special learning needs.
Usefulness and Novelty
Through The Story of Khamdy, more than 100 effective strategies to assist the development
of social communication skills and behavioural management among children with autism
are introduced based on the solution-focused approach. The Story of Khamdy features
challenging situations commonly encountered by children with autism as well as solutions
that parents and teachers can use to help and support children with autism in such
situations. The strategies introduced in this resource are based on naturalistic techniques
that parents and teachers can use to help children with autism in natural settings. More
than 100 effective research evidence-based strategies were selected by the author
in conjunction with a consultative panel that comprised inclusive education experts
from Universiti Sains Malaysia, University of Nottingham Malaysia, and University of
Nottingham UK. In this training resource, the effective strategies are delivered through a
pictorial narrative approach—an innovative method that has proven effective in a short
time. This allows parents and educators to get a direct picture of the application of
these strategies in real situations. This approach is one of the most relevant methods
for the transfer of knowledge in the community because storytelling is undeniably
one of the most original and effective ways of transferring knowledge since ancient
times. The design of this resource is also based on the dual-coding theory which
emphasises on the integration of both verbal and visual approaches to reduce
the cognitive load in learning new information and also to facilitate retrieval of
information from memory. The Story of Khamdy is a new effort that employs this
learning theory in presenting a large-scale collection of strategies. In this effort,
more than 400 photographs have been produced by a team that specializes in
the production of educational materials.

Puncture Proof Self Healing Tyre
My STIE 10X10 Science & Technology Driver
ADVANCED MATERIALS
Problem Statement
• Statistics from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, US estimate that tire blow-
outs cause over 78,000 accidents every year. This results in approximately 10,000 injuries and
400 deaths.
• In Malaysia approximately 20% of road accident root cause is due to tyre blowout
• Tire blowouts can occur in a variety of situations. The debris such as broken glass and nails
can compromise the integrity of a tire, increasing the chance that it will blow out while on the
road.
• Rubber is the main material for tyre manufacturing. Indeed to the properties of rubber which
can sustain large deflections with little or no permanent deformation, rubbers still fail through
fracture, puncture and fatigue.
Product Description
Puncture Proof Self-healing Tyre engineered in this invention has the capability to repair itself
and to recover functionality when it is damaged without the need for detection or repair by
manual intervention of any kind. The material was developed based on natural rubber and vul-
canized using self-developed self-healing curative agent. This makes possible to immediately
transfer the technology to industry rendering high added value products.
Usefulness and Novelty
Self-healing rubber forms a sealing layer, which is placed inside the tyre in the area correspond-
ing to the tread pattern. In case of penetration by external objects such as nails, there is no
need for immediate roadside tyre changes, the material deals immediately with the hole and, in
most cases, its fast and effective action means that the driver won’t even realize that the tyre
has been punctured The material immediately repair itself, recover the tyre functionality and
blocks every possible air leakage in the event of a puncture that passes through the tyre, with
or without an external object still present. Self-healing rubber can be used to manufacture new
tyre or adhered into inner layer in existing tyre and does not need special rims or Tyre Pres-
sure Monitoring System; it can be used on any kind of vehicle and tyre sizes. Puncture Proof
Self-healing Tyre provides the following benefits and features: – Resist sharp objects while driv-
ing on different road conditions. – Save cost of spare tyre and reduce fuel consumption. – Save
your valuable time and increase your personal safety. – High network service on general wheel
mounting instrument. – Environmentally friendly-natural rubber.

ENVIRO Conductive Ink
My STIE 10X10 Science & Technology Driver
SENSOR TECHNOLOGY
Problem Statement
To create stretchable printed electronics, a major challenge
is to develop functional ink that is stable and able to be
printed by ink-jet printer. Traditional carbon-based material
such as carbon nanotubes (CNT) are widely used in
formulating printable conductive ink or paste for stretchable
conductors. Previous studies have shown that the use
of organic solvents, such as Dimethylformamide (DMF)
and N-methylpyrrolidone (NMP) able to produce good
dispersion of CNTs. However, these organic solvents are
toxic, and this brings environmental and safety concerns.
Product Description
Aqueous ENVIRO Conductive ink was developed
by adopting a specific preparation method which is
the most simplified process. The solvent of the ink is
merely water, free of other complex solvent, which
is usually necessary in the metallorganic conductive
ink. Surfactant is used as dispersant to improve the
stability of multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT)
and make it easy to preserve. Furthermore, the
ink can meet other key requirements such as low
temperature processability, appropriate viscosity and
surface tension, so it is suitable for the application
on various fexible and stretchable plastic substrate by
inkjet printing.
Usefulness and Novelty
We have developed a simple method for the production
of highly concentrated, stable, and inkjet-printable water-
based conductive ink. In the production of the ink, no
solvent exchange, chemical treatment or harsh conditions
are used. The ink contains MWCNT as the conductive
material to form a percolation network at low loading
density. Deionized water was selected as a solvent due to
its environmental friendliness and surfactant was used to aid
in the stability of MWCNT dispersion
