THE WILLOWS

Support for people with learning disabilities
and complex additional needs

Our Service

The Willows is a purpose built bungalow where we support ten
individuals with learning disabilities and complex additional needs. The
service currently supports individuals with an Autism Spectrum
Disorder, an acquired brain injury, Cerebral Palsy, epilepsy and visual
impairments. Each person requires a high level of support and we also
support individuals who may be at risk of self harming or who present
with behaviours that can challenge the service provision.

The gentlemen living at The Willows lead active and busy lives, with
each person having compiled their own programme of leisure pursuits.
Individuals are able to spend some time at The Grove Resource
Centre, which is within the same grounds, where a variety of options
are available for them to choose from whilst also accessing community
based facilities in the local area. The gentlemen enjoy a wide range of
activities from ice skating and trips to the theatre, safari parks and
zoos, to a massage in their own home. One of the favourite activities
at present is rambling through the stunning local countryside, followed
of course by a pint in the pub!

Our Environment

The Willows is wheelchair accessible throughout, with adaptations
suited to each person’s needs to promote independence in everyday
tasks.

One individual loved having a bath and water play but appeared more
nervous near a swimming pool and didn’t want to get in, although it
appeared that he wanted to join in the fun that others were having. The
staff team worked intensely with him on a 1 to 1 basis, gradually increasing
his exposure and therefore tolerance of the pool environment from talking
about the pool at home where he was relaxed and comfortable; to visiting
the pool; to standing next to the pool – firstly fully dressed, and latterly in
swimwear; to ‘dipping his toes in’ and slowly moving into the water over a
number of weeks. He is now first into the water and thoroughly enjoys his
session in the pool, happily splashing anyone within reach!

Our Staff

The manager and deputy manager at The Willows are ‘Autism
Champions’ – supported by the National Autistic Society. They have
undergone extensive training and have a passion for supporting people
with an ASD. This passion runs throughout the team at The Willows
and staff are always looking for innovative and imaginative ways to
support people to achieve their aspirations and dreams. The senior
support workers have all achieved diploma 3.

Our Location

The Willows are located in a semi rural area of Surrey, close to the
villages of Grayshott, Haslemere and Hindhead.
