SELECTED HYMNS AND SONGS

1. COME, WE THAT LOVE THE LORD

Come, we that love the Lord, and let our joys be known;
join in a song with sweet accord, join in a song with
sweet accord and thus surround the throne, and thus
surround the throne.

We’re marching to Zion, beautiful, beautiful
Zion; we’re marching upward to Zion, the
beautiful city of God.

Let those refuse to sing who never knew our God; but
children of the heavenly King, but children of the
heavenly King may speak their joys abroad, may speak
their joys abroad.

The hill of Zion yields a thousand sacred sweets before
we reach the heavenly fields, before we reach the
heavenly fields, or walk the golden streets, or walk the
golden streets.
Then let our songs abound, and every tear be dry; we’re
marching through Emmanuel’s ground, we’re marching
through Emmanuel’s ground, to fairer worlds on high, to
fairer worlds on high.

2. AND ARE WE YET ALIVE

And are we yet alive, And see each other’s face? Glory
and praise to Jesus give, For His redeeming grace.

What troubles have we seen, What conflicts have we
passed, Fightings without, and fears within, Since we
assembled last!

But out of all the Lord Hath brought us by His love; And
still He doth His help afford, And hides our life above.

Then let us make our boast Of his redeeming power,
Which save us to the uttermost, Till we can sin no more.
Amen.

3. ROCK OF AGES, CLEFT FOR ME

Rock of ages, cleft for me; Let me hide myself in
Thee; Let the water and the blood, From Thy
wounded side which flowed, Be of sin the double
cure, Save from wrath and make me pure.

Could my tears for ever flow, Could my zeal no
languor know, These for sin could not atone; Thou
must save, and thou alone; In my hand no price I
bring, Simply to Thy cross I cling.

While I draw this fleeting breath, When my eyes
shall close in death, When I rise to worlds
unknown, And behold Thee on Thy throne, Rock of
ages, cleft for me, Let me hide myself in Thee.

4. MORE ABOUT JESUS

More about Jesus would I know, More of His grace to
others show, More of His saving fullness see, More of
His love who died for me.

More, more about Jesus, More, more about
Jesus; More of His saving fullness see, More of
His love who died for me.
More about Jesus let me learn, More of His holy will
discern; Spirit of God, my teacher be, Showing the
things of Christ to me.

More about Jesus – in His Word Holding communion
with my Lord, Hearing His voice in ev’ry line, Making
each faithful saying mine.

More about Jesus on His throne, Riches in glory all His
own, More of His kingdom’s sure increase, More of His
coming – Prince of Peace.

5. LORD, I WANT TO BE A CHRISTIAN

Lord, I want to be a Christian In-a my heart, in-a my
heart; Lord, I want to be a Christian, In-a my heart.

In-a my heart, (In-a my heart) In-a my heart, (In-a
my heart) Lord, I want to be a Christian, In-a my
heart.
Lord, I want to be more loving,…
Lord, I want to be more holy,…
I don’t want to be like Judas,…
But I want to be like Jesus,…

52

6. COME YE DISCONSOLATE
Come, ye disconsolate, wher –e’er ye languish, Come to
the mercy seat, fervently kneel; Here bring your
wounded hearts, here tell your anguish; Earth has no
sorrow that heaven cannot heal.

Joy of the desolate, Light of the straying, Hope of the
penitent, fadeless and pure! Here speaks the Comforter,
tenderly saying, “Earth has no sorrow that heaven
cannot cure.”

Here see the Bread of Life; see waters flowing Forth
from the throne of God, pure from above; Come to the
feast of love; come, ever knowing Earth has no sorrow
but heaven can remove. Amen.

7. BLESSED ASSURANCE, JESUS IS MINE

Blessed assurance, Jesus is mine! O what a foretaste of
glory divine! Heir of salvation, purchase of God, Born
of His Spirit, washed in His blood.

This is my story, this is my song, Praising my
Saviour all the day long, This is my story, this is my
song, Praising my Saviour all the day long.

Perfect submission, perfect delight, Visions of rapture
now burst on my sight; Angels descending, bring from
above, Echoes of mercy, whispers of love.

Perfect submission, all is at rest, I in my Saviour am
happy and blest, Watching and waiting, looking above,
Filled with His goodness, lost in His love.

8. WHEN WE ALL GET TO HEAVEN

Sing the wondrous love of Jesus, Sing His mercy
and His grace; In the mansions bright and blessed,
He’ll prepare for us a place.

53

When we all get to Heaven, What a day of
rejoicing that will be! When we all see
Jesus, We’ll sing and shout the victory.

While we walk the pilgrim pathway Clouds will
over spread the sky; But when trav’ling days are
over, Not a shadow, not a sigh.

Let us then be true and faithful, Trusting,
serving ev’ry day; Just one glimpse of Him in
glory Will the toils of life repay.

Onward to the prize before us! Soon His beauty
we’ll behold; Soon the pearly gates will open, We
shall tread the streets of gold.

9. GOD OF OUR FATHERS, WHOSE ALMIGHTY HAND

God of our fathers, whose almighty hand Leads forth in
beauty all the starry band Of shining worlds in splendor
through the skies, Our grateful songs before Thy throne
arise.

Thy love divine hath led us in the past; In this free land
by Thee our lot is cast; Be Thou our Ruler, Guardian,
Guide, and Stay; Thy word our law, Thy paths our
chosen way.

From War’s alarms, from deadly pestilence, Be Thy
strong arm our ever sure defense; Thy true religion in
our hearts increase, Thy bounteous goodness nourish us
in peace.

Refresh Thy people on their toilsome way; Lead us from
night to never ending day; Fill all our lives with love
and grace divine, And glory, laud, and praise be ever
Thine. Amen.

10. O FOR A THOUSAND TONGUES TO SING

1. O for a thousand tongues to sing My great
Redeemer’s praise, The glories of my God and
King, The triumphs of His grace!

54

2. My gracious Master and my God, Assist me to
proclaim, To spread through all the earth abroad The
honors of Thy name.

3. Jesus! The name that charms our fears, That bids
our sorrows cease; ‘Tis music in the sinner’s ears,
‘Tis life, and health, and peace.

4. He speaks, and, listening to His voice, New life the
dead receive, The mournful, broken hearts rejoice,
The humble poor believe.

5. He breaks the power of cancelled sin, He sets the
prisoner free; His blood can make the foulest clean,
His blood availed for me.

6. See all your sins on Jesus laid: The Lamb of God
was slain, His soul was once an offering made For
every soul of man.

11. HAVE THINE OWN WAY, LORD

(Verses 1-4) Have thine own way, Lord! Have thine
own way!

Thou art the potter; I am the clay, Mold me and make
me after thy will, while I am waiting, yielding and still.

Search me and try me, Savior today! Wash me just
now, Lord, wash me just now, as in thy presence
humbly I bow.

Wounded and weary, help me I pray! Power, all power,
surely is thine! Touch me and heal me, Savior divine!

Hold o’er my being absolute sway. Fill with thy Spirit
till all shall see Christ only, always, living in me!

12. AMAZING GRACE! HOW SWEET THE SOUND

1. Amazing grace! How sweet the sound, That saved a
wretch like me! I once was lost, but now am found,
Was blind, but now I see.

2. ‘Twas grace that taught my heart to fear, And grace
my fears relieved; How precious did that grace
appear The hour I first believed!

3. Thro’ many dangers, toils, and snares, I have
already come; ‘Tis grace hath brought me safe thus
far, And grace will lead me home.

55

4. The Lord has promised good to me, His word my
hope secures; He will my shield and portion be As
long as life endures.

5. Yes, when this flesh and heart shall fail, And mortal
life shall cease, I shall possess, within the veil, A
life of joy and peace.

6. The earth shall soon dissolve like snow The sun
forbear to shine; But God, who called me here
below, Will be forever mine.

7. When we’ve been there ten thousand years, bright
shining as the sun, we’ve no less days to sing God’s
praise than when we’d first begun.

13. HOLY, HOLY, HOLY! LORD GOD ALMIGHTY

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning
our song shall rise to Thee; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and
mighty! God in Three Persons, blessed Trinity!

Holy, holy, holy! All the saints adore Thee, Casting down
their golden crowns around the glassy sea; Cherubim and
seraphim falling down before Thee, Which wert, and art, and
evermore shalt be.

Holy, holy, holy! Tho’ the darkness hide Thee, Through the
eye of sinful man Thy glory may not see, Only Thou art holy,
there is none beside Thee, Perfect in power, in love, and
purity.

Holy, holy, holy! Lord God Almighty! All Thy
works shall praise Thy name, in earth, and sky, and
sea; Holy, holy, holy, merciful and mighty! God in
Three Persons, blessed Trinity. Amen.

14. I WANT TO BE A FOLLOWER OF
CHRIST

I want to be a follower of Christ.
I want to be one of His disciples.
I want to walk in the newness of life,
Just let me be a follower of Christ.

Chorus
What do I have to do?
What do I have to say?
How do I have walk

56

Each and everyday?
Tell me what does it cost
If I carry the cross?

Just let me be a follower of Christ.

I want to be a fisher, now for Christ.
I want to bring other souls to Him.
I want to help rid this world of its strife,
Just let me be a follower of Christ.

15. LIFT HIM UP

How to reach the masses, men of every birth? For
an answer Jesus gave a key, “And I, if I be lifted up
from the earth, Will draw all men unto Me.”

Lift Him up, Lift Him up,… Still He speaks
from eternity, “And I, if I be lifted up from
the earth, will draw all men unto Me.

O the world is hungry for the living bread, Lift the
Saviour up for them to see, Trust Him, and do not
doubt the words that He said, “I’ll draw all men unto
me.”

Lift Him up by living as a Christian ought, Let the
world in you the Saviour see, Then men will gladly
follow Him who once taught, “I’ll draw all men
unto Me.”

16. COME, THOU FOUNT OF EVERY BLESSING

1. Come, Thou Fount of every blessing, Tune my heart
to sing Thy grace; Streams of mercy never ceasing,
Call for songs of loudest praise: Teach me some
melodious sonnet, Sung by flaming tongues above;
Praise the mount, O fix me on it. Mount of God’s
unchanging love.

2. Here I raise my Ebenezer; Hither by Thy help I’m
come; And I hope, by Thy good pleasure, Safely to
arrive at home: Jesus sought me when a stranger,
Wand’ring from the fold of God; He, to save my
soul from danger, Interposed His precious blood.

57

3. O, to grace how great a debtor Daily I’m
constrained to be! Let that grace, Lord, like a fetter,
Bind my wand’ring heart to Thee. Prone to wander,
Lord, I feel it; Prone to leave the God I love; Here’s
my heart; Lord, take and seal it; Seal it from Thy
courts above. Amen.

17. THOU MY EVERLASTING PORTION

Thou my everlasting portion, More than friend or life to
me, All along my pilgrim journey, Saviour, let me walk
with Thee.

Close to Thee, Close to Thee, Close to Thee, Close
to Thee; All along my pilgrim journey, Saviour, let
me walk with Thee.

Not for ease or worldly pleasure, Nor for fame my
prayer shall be; Gladly will I toil and suffer, Only let me
walk with Thee.

Close to Thee, Close to Thee, Close to Thee, Close
to Thee; Gladly will I toil and suffer, Only let me
walk with Thee.
Lead me through the vale of shadows, Bear me o’er
life’s fitful sea; Then the gate of life eternal May I enter,
Lord, with Thee.

Close to Thee, Close to Thee, Close to Thee, Close
to Thee; Then the gate of life eternal May I enter,
Lord with Thee. Amen.

18. SAVIOUR, MORE THAN LIFE TO ME

Saviour, more than life to me, I am clinging, clinging
close to Thee; Let Thy precious blood applied, Keep me
ever, ever near Thy side.

Every day, every hour, Let me feel Thy cleansing
power; May Thy tender love to me Bind me closer,
closer, Lord, to Thee.

Thro’ this changing world below, Lead me gently,
gently as I go; Trusting Thee, I cannot stray, I can never,
never lose my way.

58

Let me love Thee more and more, Till this fleeting,
fleeting life is o’er; Till my soul is lost in love, In a
brighter, brighter world above.

19. FATHER, I STRETCH MY HANDS TO THEE

Father, I stretch my hands to Thee; No other help I
know: If Thou withdraw Thyself from me, Ah!
Whither shall I go?

What did Thine only Son endure, Before I drew my
breath! What pain, what labor, to secure My soul from
endless death!

Surely Thou canst not let me die; O speak, and I shall
live; And here I will unwearied lie, Till Thou Thy Spirit
give.

Author of faith! To Thee I lift My weary, longing eyes:
O let me now receive that gift! My soul without it dies.
Amen.

20. JESUS IS TENDERLY CALLING
Jesus is tenderly calling thee home – Calling today,
calling today; Why from the sunshine of love wilt thou
roam Farther and farther away?

Calling today,…. Calling today,…. Jesus is calling,
is tenderly calling today.

Jesus is calling the weary to rest – Calling today, calling
today; Bring Him thy burden and thou shalt be blest; He
will not turn thee away.
Jesus is waiting; O come to Him now – Waiting today,
waiting today; Come with thy sins; at His feet lowly
bow; Come, and no longer delay.

Jesus is pleading; O list to His voice: Hear Him today,
hear Him today; They who believe on His name shall
rejoice; Quickly arise and away.

59

21. GOD BE WITH YOU TILL WE MEET AGAIN

God be with you till we meet again! By His counsels
guide, up hold you, With His sheep securely fold you;
God be with you till we meet again!

Till we meet!…. Till we meet! Till we meet at Jesus’
feet; Till we meet!…. Till we meet! God be with you
till we meet again!

God be with you till we meet again! ‘Neath His wings
securely hide you, Daily manna still provide you; God
be with you till we meet again!

God be with you till we meet again! When life’s perils
thick confound you, Put His arms unfailing round you;
God be with you till meet again!

God be with you till we meet again! Keep love’s banner
floating o’er you, Smite death’s threat’ning wave before
you; God be with you till we meet again!

22. BE STILL MY SOUL

Be still, my soul: the Lord is on thy side; Bear patiently the
cross of grief or pain; Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain. Be still my soul: thy
best, thy heavenly Friend Thro’ thorny ways leads to a joyful
end.

Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake To guide the future
as He has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing
shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last. Be still, my
soul: the waves and winds still know His voice who ruled
them while He dwelt below.

Be still, my soul: the hour is hastening on When
we shall be forever with the Lord, When
disappointment, grief and fear are gone, Sorrow
forgot, love’s purest joys restored. Be still, my
soul: when change and tears are past, All safe and
blessed we shall meet at last. Amen.

60

23. PRAISE HIM! PRAISE HIM!

Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Sing, O earth, His wonderful love proclaim! Hail Him!
Hail Him! Highest archangels in glory; Strength and
honor give to His holy name! Like a shepherd, Jesus
will guard His children, In His arms He carries them all
day long:

Praise Him! Praise Him! Tell of His excellent
greatness; Praise Him! Praise Him! Ever in joyful
song!

Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
For our sins He suffered, and bled, and died; He our
Rock, our hope of eternal salvation, Hail Him! Hail
Him! Jesus the Crucified. Sound His praises! Jesus
who bore our sorrows, Love unbounded, wonderful,
deep and strong:

Praise Him! Praise Him! Jesus, our blessed Redeemer!
Heavenly portals loud with hosannas ring! Jesus,
Saviour, reigneth forever and ever; Crown Him! Crown
Him! Prophet, and Priest, and King! Christ is coming!
Over the world victorious, Power and glory unto the
Lord belong:

24. A MIGHTY FORTRESS IS OUR GOD

A mighty Fortress is our God, A Bulwark never
failing; Our Helper He, amid the flood Of mortal
ills prevailing: For still our ancient foe Doth seek
to work us woe; His craft and power are great,
And, armed with cruel hate, On earth is not his
equal.

Did we in our own strength confide, Our striving
would be losing; Were not the right Man on our
side, The Man of God’s own choosing: Dost ask
who that may be: Christ Jesus, it is He; Lord
Sabaoth His name, From age to age the same, And
He must win the battle.

And though this world, with devils filled, Should
threaten to undo us, We will not fear, for God hath
willed His truth to triumph through us: The Prince

61

of Darkness grim – We tremble not for him; His
rage we can endure, For lo! His doom is sure, One
little word shall fell him.

That word above all earthly powers, No thanks to
them, abideth; The Spirit and the gifts are ours
Through Him who with us sideth: Let goods and
kindred go, This mortal life also; The body they
may kill: God’s truth abideth still, His Kingdom is
forever. Amen.

25. ALAS! AND DID MY SAVIOUR BLEED?

Alas! And did my Saviour bleed? And did my
Sovereign die? Would He devote that sacred head For
such a worm as I?

Was it for crimes that I have done He groaned upon the
tree? Amazing pity! Grace unknown! And love beyond
degree!

Well might the sun in darkness hide, And shut His
glories in, When Christ, the mighty Maker, died, For
man, the creature’s sin.

Thus might I hide my blushing face, While His dear
cross appears; Dissolve my heart in thankfulness, And
melt mine eyes to tears.

But drops of grief can ne’er repay The debt of love I
owe: Here, Lord, I give myself away, -‘Tis all that I
can do. Amen.

26. ALL HAIL THE POWER OF JESUS’ NAME!

All hail the power of Jesus’ Name! Let angels prostrate
fall; Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown Him
Lord of all’ Bring forth the royal diadem, And crown
Him Lord of all.

Ye chosen seed of Israel’s race, Ye ransomed from the
fall, Hail Him who saves you by His grace, And crown
Him Lord of all; Hail Him who saves you by His grace,
And crown Him Lord of all.

Sinners, whose love can ne’er forget The worm-wood
and the gall, Go, spread your trophies at His feet, And

62

crown Him Lord of all; Go, spread your trophies at His
feet, And crown Him Lord of all.

Let every kindred, every tribe, On this terrestrial ball,
To Him all majesty ascribe, And crown Him Lord of
all; To Him all majesty ascribe And crown Him Lord
of all.

O, that with yonder sacred throng We at His feet may
fall! We’ll join the everlasting song, And crown him
Lord of all; We’ll join the everlasting song, And crown
Him Lord of all. Amen.

27. ONCE MORE WE COME BEFORE OUR GOD
(St. Agnes C.M.)

Once more we come before our God; Once more His
blessings ask: O may not duty seem a load, Nor
worship prove a task!

Father, Thy quickening Spirit send From heaven in
Jesus’ name, To make our waiting minds attend, And
put our souls in frame.

May we receive the word we hear, Each in an honest
heart, And keep the precious treasure there, And never
with it part!

To seek Thee all our hearts dispose, To each Thy
blessing suit, And let the seed Thy servant sows
Produce abundant fruit. Amen.

28. I LOVE THY KINGDOM, LORD
(St. Thomas S. M.)

I love Thy kingdom, Lord, The house of Thine abode,
The Church our blest Redeemer saved With His own
precious blood.

I love Thy Church, O God! Her walls before Thee
stand, Dear as the apple of Thine eye, And graven on
Thy hand.

For her my tears shall fall, For her my prayers ascend,
To her my cares and toils be given, Till toils and cares
shall end.

63

Beyond my highest joy I prize her heavenly ways, Her
sweet communion, solemn vows, Her hymns of love
and praise.

Sure as Thy truth shall last, To Zion shall be given The
brightest glories earth can yield, And brighter bliss of
heaven. Amen.

29. GUIDE ME, O THOU GREAT JEHOVAH

Guide me, O Thou great Jehovah, Pilgrim through this
barren land: I am weak, but Thou art mighty; Hold me
with Thy powerful hand; Bread of heaven, Feed me till
I want no more. Bread of heaven, Feed me till I want
no more.

Open now the crystal fountain, Whence the healing
waters flow; Let the fiery, cloudy pillar, Lead me all
my journey through: Strong Deliverer, Be Thou still
my strength and shield. Strong Deliverer, Be Thou still
my strength and shield.

When I tread the verge of Jordan, Bid my anxious fears
subside; Bear me through the swelling current; Land
me safe on Canaan’s side: Songs of praises I will ever
give to Thee. Songs of praises I will ever give to Thee.
Amen.

30. ARE YE ABLE, SAID THE MASTER

“Are ye able,” said the Master, “To be crucified with
me?” “Yea,” the sturdy dreamers answered, “To the
death we follow Thee.”

“Lord, we are able.” Our spirits are Thine. Remold
them, make us, Like Thee, divine. Thy guiding radiance
Above us shall be A beacon to God, To faith and
loyalty (Amen).

“Are ye able” to remember, When a thief lifts up his
eyes, That his pardoned soul is worthy Of a place in
paradise?

“Are ye able” when the shadows Close around you
with the sod, To believe that spirit triumphs, To
commend your soul to God?

64

“Are ye able?” Still the Master Whispers down
eternity, And heroic spirits answer Now, as then, in
Galilee.

31. TAKE MY LIFE, AND LET IT BE

Take my life, and let it be Consecrated, Lord, to Thee;
Take my hands, and let them move At the impulse of
Thy love, At the impulse of Thy love.

Take my feet, and let them be Swift and beautiful for
Thee; Take my voice, and let me sing Always, only, for
my King, Always, only, for my King.

Take my lips, and let them be Filled with messages
from Thee; Take my silver and my gold, Not a mite
would I withhold, Not a mite would I withhold.

Take my will and make it Thine; It shall be no longer
mine; Take my heart, it is Thine own! It shall be Thy
royal throne, It shall be Thy royal throne.

Take my love; my Lord, I pour At Thy feet its treasure-
store; Take myself, and I will be, Ever, only, all for
Thee, Ever, only, all for Thee. Amen.

32. OUR PROMISE, PRAISE AND PETITION

We pledge our all in service to the master. We’ll
give to Him our best in ev’ry way. The road is
hard, Lord, keep us from disaster, And guide our
feet, lest we should go astray. O, thank you Lord
for the many ways that you can bless, And calm
our hearts when life seems all up hill. Keep us
forever in the path of righteousness Give us the
faith we need to do your precious will.

Too many hearts don’t know your love and
eminence. Many the naked, hungry suff’ring soul.
O, make us vessels of your great omnipotence, To
show them that Your power can make them whole.
Our world is full of pain and tribulation Satan is
there to quickly take control. But Lord with You

65

we’ll conquer ev’ry opposition Teach us to let
Your Holy Spirit flood each soul.

And then one day this rugged journey’s end will
come. We’ll join the saints who labored long ago.
We’ll have to stand before You in Your kingdom.
There to be judged for deeds done here below. O,
Gracious Lord, forgive the times that we did err.
So that the record will be white as sno’. And may
we hear You say: “My children enter.” Where we
shall dwell with Thee forever mo.’ Amen.

33. SPIRIT OF THE LIVING GOD

Spirit of the living God, fall a-fresh on me. Spirit
of the living God, fall fresh on me. Melt me, mold
me, fill me, use me. Spirit of the living God, fall
fresh on me.

34. SWEET, SWEET SPIRIT

There’s a sweet, sweet Spirit in this place, and I
know that it’s the Spirit of the Lord; there are
sweet expressions on each face, and I know they
feel the presence of the Lord.

Refrain
Sweet Holy Spirit, sweet heavenly Dove, stay right
here with us, filling us with your love; and for
these blessings we lift our hearts in praise; without
a doubt we’ll know that we have been revived
when we shall leave this place.

35. THEY’LL KNOW WE ARE CHRISTIANS

We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,
We are one in the Spirit, we are one in the Lord,
And we pray that all unity may one day be
restored:

And they’ll know we are Christians by our love, by
our love, Yes, they’ll know we are Christians by
our love.

66

We will walk with each other, we will walk hand
in hand, We will walk with each other, we will
walk hand in hand, And together we’ll spread the
news that God is in our land:

We will work with each other, we will work side
by side, We will work with each other, we will
work side by side, And we’ll guard each one’s
dignity and save each one’s pride:

All praise to the Father, from whom all things
come, And all praise to Christ Jesus, His only son,
And all praise to the Spirit, who makes us one:

36. ALL TO JESUS I SURRENDER

All to Jesus I surrender, All to Him I freely give; I will
ever love and trust Him, In His presence daily live.

I surrender all, I surrender all; All to Thee, my blessed
Savior, I surrender all.

All to Jesus I surrender, Humbly at His feet I bow;
Worldly pleasures all forsaken, Take me, Jesus, take
me now.

All to Jesus I surrender, Make me, Savior, wholly
Thine; Let me feel the Holy Spirit, Truly know that
Thou art mine.

All to Jesus I surrender, Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power, Let Thy blessings fall
on me.

All to Jesus I surrender, Now I feel the sacred flame;
Oh, the joy of full salvation! Glory, glory to His name!

37. MY HOPE IS BUILT ON NOTHING LESS

My hope is built on nothing less Than Jesus’ blood
and righteousness; I dare not trust the sweetest
frame, But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

67

On Christ, the solid rock I stand; All other ground
is sinking sand, All other ground is sinking sand.
(Amen).

When darkness veils His lovely face I rest on His
unchanging grace; In every high and stormy gale,
My anchor holds within the veil.

His oath, His covenant, His blood, Support me in
the whelming flood; When all around my soul
gives way, He then is all my hope and stay.

When He shall come with trumpet sound, O may I
then in Him be found! Dressed in His
righteousness alone, Faultless to stand before the
throne!

38. THE CHURCH’S ONE FOUNDATION

The Church’s one foundation Is Jesus Christ her
Lord; She is His new creation By water and the
word: From heaven He came and sought her To
be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought
her, And for her life He died.

Elect from every nation, Yet one o’er all the earth,
Her charter of salvation, One Lord, one faith, one
birth; One holy Name she blesses, Partakes one
holy food, And to one hope she presses, With
every grace endued.

‘Mid toil and tribulation, And tumult of her war,
She waits the consummation Of peace for
evermore; Till, with the vision glorious, Her
longing eyes are blest, And the great Church
victorious Shall be the Church at rest.

Yet she on earth hath union With God the Three in
One, And mystic sweet communion With those
whose rest is won: O happy ones and holy! Lord,
give us grace that we, Like them, the meek and
lowly, On high may dwell with Thee. Amen.

68

39. LOVE LIFTED ME

I was sinking deep in sin, Far from the peaceful shore,
Very deeply stained within, Sinking to rise no more;
But the Master of the sea Heard my despairing cry,
From the waters lifted me – Now safe am I.

Love lifted me, Love lifted me, When nothing else could
help, Love lifted me.

All my heart to Him I give, Ever to Him I’ll cling, In
His blessed presence live, Ever His praises sing. Love
so mighty and so true Merits my soul’s best songs;
Faithful, loving service too To Him belongs.

Souls in danger, look above, Jesus completely saves;
He will lift you by His love Out of the angry waves.
He’s the Master of the sea, Billows His will obey; He
your Savior wants to be – Be saved today.
40. IT IS WELL WITH MY SOUL

When peace like a river attendeth my way, When
sorrows like sea billows roll, Whatever my lot, Thou
has taught me to say: “It is well, it is well with my
soul.”

It is well (It is well) with my soul, (with my soul), it is
well, it is well with my soul!

Tho’ Satan should buffet tho’ trials should come, Let
this blest assurance control, That Christ hath regarded
my helpless estate, And hath shed His own blood for
my soul.

My sin – oh, the bliss of this glorious tho’t – My sin –
not in part but the whole, – Is nailed to His cross, and I
bear it no more; Praise the Lord, praise the Lord, O my
soul!

And, Lord, haste the day when the faith shall be sight,
The clouds be rolled back as a scroll, The trump shall
re-sound, and the Lord shall descend, – “Even so – it is
well with my soul.

41. TAKE THE NAME OF JESUS WITH YOU

Take the Name of Jesus with you , Child of sorrow and of
woe, It will joy and comfort give you; Take it then, where’re
you go.

Refrain

Precious Name, O how sweet! Hope of earth and joy of
Heav’n. Precious Name, O how sweet! Hope of earth and
joy of Heav’n.

Take the Name of Jesus ever, As a shield from every snare;
If temptations round you gather, Breathe that holy Name in
prayer.

Refrain

O the precious Name of Jesus! How it thrills our souls with
joy, When His loving arms receive us, and His songs our
tongues employ!

Refrain

At the Name of Jesus bowing, Falling prostrate at His feet,
Kings of kings in Heav’n we’ll crown Him, When our
journey is complete.

Refrain

42. BREAK THOU THE BREAD OF LIFE

Break Thou the bread of life, Dear Lord, to me, As
Thou didst break the loaves Beside the sea; Beyond the
sacred page I seek Thee, Lord; My spirit pants for
Thee, O living Word!
Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord, To me – to me, As
Thou didst bless the bread By Galilee; Then shall all
bondage cease, All fetters fall; And I shall find my
peace, My All – in – all. Amen.

43. JESUS, SAVIOUR, PILOT ME
Jesus, Saviour, pilot me Over life’s tempestuous sea;
Unknown waves before me roll, Hiding rock and

70

treacherous shoal; Chart and compass came from Thee:
Jesus, Saviour, pilot me.

As a mother still her child, Thou canst hust the ocean
wild; Boisterous waves obey Thy will When Thou
sayest to them, “Be still!” Wondrous Soverign of the
sea, Jesus, Saviour, pilot me.

When at last I near the shore, And the fearful breakers
roar ‘Twixt me and the peaceful rest, Then, while
leaning on Thy breast, May I hear Thee say to me,
“Fear not, I will pilot thee.” Amen.

44. JESUS, KEEP ME NEAR THE CROSS

Jesus, keep me near the Cross; There a precious
fountain, Free to all – a healing stream – Flows from
Calvary’s mountain.

In the cross, in the cross, Be my glory ever, Till my
raptured soul shall find Rest beyond the river.

Near the cross, a trembling soul, Love and mercy found
me; There the bright and morning Star Shed its beams
around me.

Near the cross! O Lamb of God, Bring its scenes before
me; Help me walk from day to day With its shadow
o’er me.

Near the cross I’ll watch and wait, Hoping, trusting
ever, Till I reach the golden strand Just beyond the
river.

45. MORE LOVE TO THEE, O CHRIST

More love to Thee, O Christ, More love to Thee! Hear
Thou the prayer I make On bended knee; This is my
earnest plea, More love, O Christ, to Thee, More love
to Thee, More love to Thee!

Once earthly joy I craved, Sought peace and rest; Now
Thee alone I seek, Give what is best: This all my
prayer shall be, More love, O Christ, to Thee, More
love to Thee, More love to Thee!

Then shall my latest breath Whisper Thy praise; This
be the parting cry My heart shall raise; This still its

71

prayer shall be, More love, O Christ, to Thee, More
love to Thee, More love to Thee! Amen.

46. MY FAITH LOOKS UP TO THEE

My faith looks up to Thee, Thou Lamb of Calvary,
Saviour divine, Now hear me while I pray, Take all my
guilt away, O let me from this day Be wholly Thine!

May Thy rich grace impart, Strength to my fainting
heart, My zeal inspire; As Thou hast died for me, O
may my love to Thee Pure, warm, and changeless be, A
living fire!

While life’s dark maze I tread, And griefs around me
spread, Be Thou my guide; Bid darkness turn to day,
Wipe sorrow’s tears away, Nor let me ever stray From
Thee aside.

When ends life’s transient dream, When death’s cold,
sullen stream Shall o’er me roll; Blest Saviour, then, in
love, Fear and distrust remove; O bear me safe above,
A ransomed soul! Amen.

47. HOW FIRM A FOUNDATION

How firm a foundation, ye saints of the Lord, Is laid for
your faith in His excellent Word! What more can He
say than to you He hath said, To you who for refuge to
Jesus have fled?

“Fear not, I am with thee, O be not dismayed, For I am
thy God, and will still give thee aid; I’ll strengthen
thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, Upheld by My
righteous, omnipotent hand.

“When through the deep waters I call thee to go, The
rivers of woe shall not thee overflow; For I will be with
thee thy troubles to bless, And sanctify to thee thy
deepest distress.

“When through fiery trials thy pathway shall lie, My
grace, all sufficient, shall be thy supply, The flame
shall not hurt thee; I only design Thy dross to consume,
and thy gold to refine.

“The soul that on Jesus still leans for repose, I will not,
I will not desert to his foes; That soul though all hell

72

should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no, never, no,
never forsake. Amen.

48. O THOU, IN WHOSE PRESENCE

O Thou, in whose presence my soul takes delight, On
whom in affliction I call, My comfort by day, and my
song in the night, My hope, my salvation, my all!

Where dost Thou, dear Shepherd, resort with Thy
sheep, To feed them in pastures of love? Say, why in
the valley of death should I weep, Or alone in this
wilderness rove?

O why should I wander an alien from Thee, Or cry in
the desert for bread? Thy foes will rejoice when my
sorrows they see, And smile at the tears I have shed.

Restore, my dear Saviour, the light of Thy face; Thy
soul-cheering comfort impart; And let the sweet tokens
of pardoning grace Bring joy to my desolate heart.

He looks! and ten thousands of angels rejoice, And
myriads wait for His word; He speaks! and eternity,
filled with His voice, Re-echoes the praise of the Lord.
Amen.

49. VICTORY IN JESUS

I heard an old, old story, how a Saviour came from
glory, how he gave his life on Calvary to save a wretch
like me; I heard about his groaning, of his precious
blood’s atoning, then I repented of my sins and won the
victory.

O victory in Jesus, my Saviour forever! He sought me
and bought me with his redeeming blood; he love me
ere I knew him, and all my love is due him; he plunged
me to victory beneath the cleansing flood.

I heard about his healing, of his cleansing power
revealing, how he made the lame to walk again and
caused the blind to see; and then I cried, “Dear Jesus,
come and heal my broken spirit,” and some how Jesus
came and brought to me the victory.

73

I heard about a mansion he has built for me in glory,
and I heard about the streets of gold beyond the crystal
sea; about the angels singing and the old redemption
story, and some sweet day I’ll sing up there the song of
victory.

50. O Worship the King

O worship the King, all glorious above,
O gratefully sing His power and His love;
Our Shield and Defender, the Ancient of Days,
Pavilioned in splendor, and girded with praise.

O tell of His might, O sing of His grace,
Whose robe is the light, Whose canopy space,
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form,
And dark is His path on the wings of the storm.

The earth with its store of wonders untold,
Almighty, Thy power hath founded of old;
Established it fast by a changeless decree,
And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.

Thy bountiful care, what tongue can recite?
It breathes in the air, it shines in the light;
It streams from the hills, it descends to the plain,
And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

Frail children of dust, and feeble as frail,
In Thee do we trust, nor find Thee to fail;
Thy mercies how tender, how firm to the end,
Our Maker, Defender, Redeemer, and Friend.

O measureless might! Ineffable love!
While angels delight to worship Thee above,
The humbler creation, though feeble their lays,
With true adoration shall all sing Thy praise.

51. LET US BREAK BREAD TOGETHER

Let us break bread together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us break bread together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

74

Let us drink wine together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us drink wine together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

Let us praise God together on our knees, (on our knees)
Let us praise God together on our knees. (on our knees)
When I fall on my knees with my face to the rising sun,
O Lord, have mercy on me.

52. JOYFUL, JOYFUL WE ADORE THEE

Joyful, joyful, we adore Thee, God of glory, Lord of love;
Hearts unfold like flowers before Thee, opening to the sun
above. Melt the clouds of sin and sadness; drive the dark of
doubt away; Giver of immortal gladness, fill us with the
light of day!

All Thy works with joy surround Thee, earth and heaven
reflect Thy rays, Stars and angels sing around Thee, center
of unbroken praise. Field and forest, vale and mountain,
flowery meadow, flashing sea, Singing bird and flowing
fountain call us to rejoice in Thee.

Thou art giving and forgiving, ever blessing, ever blessed,
Wellspring of the joy of living, ocean depth of happy rest!
Thou our Father, Christ our Brother, all who live in love are
Thine; Teach us how to love each other, lift us to the joy
divine.

Mortals, join the happy chorus, which the morning stars
began; Father love is reigning o’er us, brother love binds
man to man. Ever singing, march we onward, victors in the
midst of strife, Joyful music leads us Sunward in the
triumph song of life.

53. JESUS THE LIGHT OF THE WORLD

1. Hark! The Herald angels sing,
Jesus, the Light of the world;
Glory to the newborn King,
Jesus, the Light of the world.

75

We’ll walk in the light, beautiful light,
Come where the dew drops of mercy are bright,
Shine all around us by day and by night,
Jesus the Light of the world.

2. Joyful all ye nations rise,
Jesus, the Light of the world;
Join the triumphs of the skies,
Jesus, the Light of the world,

3. Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Jesus, the Light of the world,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Jesus, the Light of the world,

4. Hail! The heaven born Prince of peace,
Jesus, the Light of the world;
Hail! The sun of righteousness,
Jesus, the Light of the world,

54. BREATHE ON ME, BREATH OF GOD

Breathe on me, breath of God,
Fill me with life anew,
That I may love what Thou dost love,
And do what Thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
Until my heart is pure,
Until with Thee I will one will,
To do and to endure.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
Blend all my soul with Thine,
Until this earthly part of me
Glows with Thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, breath of God,
So shall I never die,
But live with Thee the perfect life
Of Thine eternity.

76

55. TRUST AND OBEY

When we walk with the Lord in the light of His Word,
What a glory He sheds on our way!
While we do His good will, He abides with us still,
And with all who will trust and obey.

Refrain

Trust and obey, for there’s no other way
To be happy in Jesus, but to trust and obey.

Not a shadow can rise, not a cloud in the skies,
But His smile quickly drives it away;
Not a doubt or a fear, not a sigh or a tear,
Can abide while we trust and obey.

Not a burden we bear, not a sorrow we share,
But our toil He doth richly repay;
Not a grief or a loss, not a frown or a cross,
But is blessed if we trust and obey.

But we never can prove the delights of His love
Until all on the altar we lay;
For the favor He shows, for the joy He bestows,
Are for them who will trust and obey.

Then in fellowship sweet we will sit at His feet.
Or we’ll walk by His side in the way.
What He says we will do, where He sends we will go;
Never fear, only trust and obey.

56. ‘TIS SO SWEET TO TRUST IN JESUS

’Tis so sweet to trust in Jesus,
And to take Him at His Word;
Just to rest upon His promise,
And to know, “Thus says the Lord!”

Refrain

77

Jesus, Jesus, how I trust Him!
How I’ve proved Him o’er and o’er
Jesus, Jesus, precious Jesus!
O for grace to trust Him more!

O how sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just to trust His cleansing blood;
And in simple faith to plunge me
’Neath the healing, cleansing flood!

Yes, ’tis sweet to trust in Jesus,
Just from sin and self to cease;
Just from Jesus simply taking
Life and rest, and joy and peace.

I’m so glad I learned to trust Thee,
Precious Jesus, Savior, Friend;
And I know that Thou art with me,
Wilt be with me to the end.

57. YACM Theme Song

It only takes a spark, to get a fire going.
And soon all those around, can warm up it it's glowing.
That's how it is with God's love,
Once you've experienced it,
You spread His love to everyone;
You want to pass it on

What a wondrous time is Spring
When all the trees are budding.
The birds begin to sing,
the flowers start their blooming;
That's how it is with God's love,
Once you've experienced it,
You want to sing, it's fresh like spring,
You want to pass it on

I wish for you my friend
this happiness that I've found
You can depend on him

78

It matters not where your bound;
I'll shout it from the mountain tops
I want the world to know;
The Lord of Life has come to me
I want to pass it on.

58. WHEN I SURVEY THE WONDROUS CROSS

When I survey the wondrous cross
On which the Prince of glory died,
My richest gain I count but loss,
And pour contempt on all my pride.

Forbid it, Lord, that I should boast,
Save in the death of Christ my God!
All the vain things that charm me most,
I sacrifice them to His blood.

See from His head, His hands, His feet,
Sorrow and love flow mingled down!
Did e’er such love and sorrow meet,
Or thorns compose so rich a crown?

His dying crimson, like a robe,
Spreads o’er His body on the tree;
Then I am dead to all the globe,
And all the globe is dead to me.

Were the whole realm of nature mine,
That were a present far too small;
Love so amazing, so divine,
Demands my soul, my life, my all.

[Added by the compilers of Hymns Ancient and Modern]

To Christ, Who won for sinners grace
By bitter grief and anguish sore,
Be praise from all the ransomed race
Forever and forevermore.

59. HE LEADETH ME

He leadeth me, O blessèd thought!
O words with heav’nly comfort fraught!

79

Whate’er I do, where’er I be
Still ’tis God’s hand that leadeth me.

Refrain

He leadeth me, He leadeth me,
By His own hand He leadeth me;
His faithful follower I would be,
For by His hand He leadeth me.

Sometimes mid scenes of deepest gloom,
Sometimes where Eden’s bowers bloom,
By waters still, over troubled sea,
Still ’tis His hand that leadeth me.

Refrain

Lord, I would place my hand in Thine,
Nor ever murmur nor repine;
Content, whatever lot I see,
Since ’tis my God that leadeth me.

Refrain

And when my task on earth is done,
When by Thy grace the vict’ry’s won,
E’en death’s cold wave I will not flee,
Since God through Jordan leadeth me.

Refrain

60. GO LIGHT YOUR WORLD

There is a candle in every soul, Some brightly burning,
Some dark and cold. There is a spirit who brings a fire,
Ignites a candle and makes HIS home

Chorus
Carry Your Candle, Run to the Darkness
Seek out the Hopeless Confused and Torn
Hold out your Candle for all to see it
TAKE YOUR CANDLE AND GO LIGHT YOUR
WORLD
TAKE YOUR CANDLE AND GO LIGHT YOUR
WORLD

80

Frustrated brother, see how he’s tried to
Light his own candle some other way
See how your sister, she’s been robbed and lied to
Still holds a candle without a flame

Chorus 2
Carry Your Candle, Run to the Darkness
Seek out the Lonely, the Tired and Worn
Hold out your Candle for all to see it
TAKE YOUR CANDLE AND GO LIGHT YOUR
WORLD
TAKE YOUR CANDLE AND GO LIGHT YOUR
WORLD

We are a family whose hearts are blazing
So let’s raise our candles and light up the Sky
Praying to OUR FATHER, in the name of JESUS
Make us a beacon in darkest times

Chorus 3
CARRY YOUR CANDLE Run to the darkness;
Seek out the Helpless Deceived and Poor
Hold Out your CANDLE for all to see it
TAKE YOUR CANDLE AND GO LIGHT YOUR
WORLD
Carry Your Candle, Run to the Darkness
Seek out the Hopeless Confused and Torn
Hold out your Candle for all to see it
TAKE YOUR CANDLE AND GO LIGHT YOUR
WORLD
TAKE YOUR CANDLE AND GO LIGHT YOUR
WORLD

61. JESUS SPREADS HIS BANNER O’ER US

Jesus spreads his banner o’er us,
Cheers our famished souls with food;
He the banquet spreads before us,
Of His mystic flesh and blood.
Precious banquet, bread of heaven,
Wine of gladness, flowing free;

81

May we taste it, kindly given,
In remembrance, Lord, of Thee.

In Thy holy incarnation,
When the angels sang Thy birth;
In Thy fasting and temptation,
In Thy labors on the earth,
In Thy trial and rejection,
In Thy sufferings on the tree,
In Thy glorious resurrection,
May we, Lord, remember Thee.

62. 2007 – 2011 WHOMS QUADRENNIAL THEME

SONG

“Everything He Said, We Will Do”

Verse:
Victorious living, prayer and fasting
Jesus has promised everlasting life
Praise and worship, purpose and power
His love grows greater hour by hour

Chorus:
Everything He said, we will do

His word speaks volumes and is true
He’s always with us and we’ll make it through

Everything He said, we will do.

Special Chorus:
Because He is awesome, almighty and glorious
Because He is our God and in Him is victory
Because He is awesome, almighty and glorious
Everything He said, we will do.

63. MUST JESUS BEAR THE CROSS ALONE

Must Jesus bear the cross alone,

And all the world go free?
No, there’s a cross for everyone,
And there’s a cross for me.

How happy are the saints above,
Who once went sorrowing here!
But now they taste unmingled love,
And joy without a tear.

82

The consecrated cross I’ll bear
Till death shall set me free;
And then go home my crown to wear,
For there’s a crown for me. A-men.

64. LEAD ME, GUIDE ME…..ALONG THE WAY

I am weak and I need Thy strength and power,
To help me over my weakest hour.
Let me through the darkness Thy face to see,
Lead me, oh Lord lead me.

Chorus
Lead me, guide me along the way,
For if you lead me I cannot stray.
Lord let me walk each day with Thee.
Lead me, oh Lord lead me.

Help me tread in the paths of righteousness.
Be my aid when Satan and sin oppress.
I am putting all my trust in Thee:
Lead me, oh Lord lead me.

Chorus
Lead me, guide me along the way,
For if you lead me I cannot stray.
Lord let me walk each day with Thee.
Lead me, oh Lord lead me.

I am lost if you take your hand from me,
I am blind without Thy light to see.
Lord, just always let me thy servant be,
Lead me, oh Lord lead me.

Chorus
Lead me, guide me along the way,
For if you lead me I cannot stray.
Lord let me walk each day with Thee.
Lead me, oh Lord lead me.

65. WE’VE HEARD THE JOYFUL SOUND

We have heard the joyful sound:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

83

Spread the tidings all around:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Bear the news to every land,
climb the steeps and cross the waves;
onward! ’tis our Lord’s command:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Waft it on the rolling tide:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Tell to sinners far and wide:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Sing, you islands of the sea!
Echo back, you ocean caves!
Earth shall keep her jubilee:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Sing above the battle strife:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
By his death and endless life,
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Sing it softly through the gloom,
when the heart for mercy craves;
sing in triumph o’er the tomb:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

Give the winds a mighty voice:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Let the nations now rejoice:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!
Shout salvation full and free,
highest hills and deepest caves;
this our song of victory:
Jesus saves! Jesus saves!

66. GREAT IS THY FAITHFULNESS

"Great is Thy faithfulness," O God my Father,
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not, Thy compassions, they fail not
As Thou hast been Thou forever wilt be.

"Great is Thy faithfulness!" "Great is Thy faithfulness!"
Morning by morning new mercies I see;
All I have needed Thy hand hath provided—
"Great is Thy faithfulness," Lord, unto me!

84

Summer and winter, and springtime and harvest,
Sun, moon and stars in their courses above,
Join with all nature in manifold witness
To Thy great faithfulness, mercy and love.

Pardon for sin and a peace that endureth,
Thy own dear presence to cheer and to guide;
Strength for today and bright hope for tomorrow,
Blessings all mine, with ten thousand beside!

67. WE’VE COME THIS FAR BY FAITH

We've come this far by faith
Leaning on the Lord
Trusting in His Holy word
He never failed me yet
Oh' Can't Turn Around
We've come this far by faith

(Repeat)

Just the other day, I heard a man say
He did not believe in God's word
But I can truly say, the Lord has made a way
He's never failed me yet

Chorus

Oh' Oh' Oh' Oh' Oh' Oh' Oh
Can't Turn Around
We've come this far by faith

68. THE LORD IS BLESSING ME

The Lord is blessing me, Right now, oh right now
I said The Lord is blessing me, Right now, oh right now
He woke me up this morning
And started me on my way
The Lord is blessing me, Right now, oh right now

Chorus

85

He woke me up this morning
I was clothed in my right mind
He didn't let me sleep too late
He woke me, woke me, work me, right on time
He woke me up this morning
And started me on my way
The Lord is blessing me, Right now, oh right now

Chorus

Tenor
The Lord is blessing me right now
The Lord is blessing me right now

The Lord is blessing me
Right now, oh right now

The Lord is blessing me
Right now, He is blessing me

He woke me up this morning
And started me on my way
The Lord

Right now
Ohhhhh
Right now!

69. WOUNDED FOR ME

Wounded for me, wounded for me, Wounded for me, He
was wounded for me. Gone my transgressions and now I
am free, All because Jesus was wounded for me.

Dying for me, dying for me, Dying for me, He was dying for
me. Gone my transgressions and now I am free, all because
Jesus was dying for me.

86

Risen for me, risen for me, Risen for me, He is risen for me.
Gone my transgressions and now I am free, all because Jesus
is risen for me.
Coming for me, coming for me, Coming for me, He is
coming for me. Then with what joy His dear face I shall
see, Oh, how I praise Him, He’s coming for me.
70. O SACRED HEAD, NOW WOUNDED
O sacred Head, now wounded, With grief and shame
weighed down, Now scornfully surrounded With thorns,
Thine only crown; How pale Thou art with anguish, With
sore abuse and scorn! How does that visage languish Which
once was bright as morn!
What Thou, my Lord hast suffered Was all for sinners’ gain:
Mine, mine was the transgression, But Thine the deadly
pain. Lo, here I fall, my Saviour! ‘Tis I deserve Thy place;
Look on me with Thy favor, Vouch – safe to me Thy grace.
What language shall I borrow To thank Thee, dearest Friend,
For this Thy dying sorrow, Thy pity without end? O make
me Thine for ever; And should I fainting be, Lord, let me
never, never Out-live my love to Thee.

87

THE RITUAL OF HOLY
COMMUNION

THE GREAT INVITATION

If any man sin, we have an Advocate with the Father,
Jesus Christ the righteous; and He is the propitiation for
our sins; and not for ours only, but for the sins of the
whole world.

Wherefore ye that do truly and earnestly repent of your
sins, and are in love and charity with your neighbors,
and intend to lead a new life, following the
commandments of God and walking from henceforth in
His holy way; drawn near with faith, and take the Holy
Sacrament to your comfort: and, devoutly kneeling,
make your humble confession to Almighty God.

THE GENERAL PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Almighty God, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,
maker of all things, Judge of all men, we
acknowledge and bewail our manifold sins and
wickedness, which we from time to time most
grievously have committed, by thought, word, and
deed, against thy Divine Majesty, provoking most
justly thy wrath and indignation against us. We do
earnestly repent, and are heartily sorry for these
our misdoings; the remembrance of them is
grievous unto us. Have mercy upon us, have mercy
upon us, most merciful Father; for Thy Son, our
Lord Jesus Christ’s sake, forgive us all that is past;
and grant that we may ever hereafter serve and
please Thee in newness of life, to the honor and
glory of Thy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
AMEN.

88

THE PRAYER OF PARDON

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who of thy great
mercy hast promised forgiveness of sins to all them that
with hearty repentance and true faith turn unto thee,
have mercy upon us, pardon and deliver us from all our
sins, confirm and strengthen us in all goodness, and
bring us to everlasting life through Jesus Christ our
Lord. AMEN.

THE COLLECT

Almighty God unto Whom all hearts are open, all
desires known, and from Whom no secrets are hid,
cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration
of Thy Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love Thee,
and worthily magnify Thy Holy Name, through
Jesus Christ our Lord. AMEN

THE PRAYER OF HUMBLE ACCESS

We do not presume to come to this Thy holy table, O
merciful Lord, trusting in our own righteousness, but in
Thy manifold and great mercies. We are not worthy so
much as to gather up the crumbs under Thy table; but
Thou art the same Lord, whose property is always to
have mercy; grant us therefore, gracious Lord, so to eat
the flesh of Thy dear Son, Jesus Christ, and to drink
His blood, that we may live and grow thereby, and that,
being washed through His most precious blood, we
may evermore dwell in Him, and He in us. AMEN.

THE PRAYER OF CONSECRATION

Almighty God our heavenly Father who of Thy tender
mercy didst give Thine only Son Jesus Christ to suffer
death upon the cross for our redemption; who made
there, by His oblation, and satisfaction for the sins of
the whole world; and did institute, and in his holy
Gospel command us to continue, a perpetual memory
of His precious death until His coming again; hear us,
O merciful Father, we humbly beseech Thee, and grant

89

that we, receiving these Thy creatures of bread and
wine, according to Thy Son our Savior Jesus Christ’s

holy institution, in remembrance of His death

and passion, may be partakers of His most blessed

body and blood; Who in the same night He was

betrayed, took bread, and when He had given thanks

He broke it, and gave it to His disciples, saying, Take,

eat; this is My body which is given for you; do this in

remembrance of Me.

Likewise after supper He took the cup; and when He
had given thanks, He gave it to them, saying Drink ye
all of this! For this is My blood of the New Testament,
which is shed for you, and for many, for the remission
of sins; do this, as oft as ye drink it, in remembrance of
Me. AMEN, AMEN, AMEN.

THE SURSUM CORDA & SANCTUS WITH
PREFACE

It is very meet, right, and our bounden duty, that we
should at all times, and in all places, give thanks
unto Thee, O Lord, Holy Father, Almighty,
Everlasting God. Therefore, with angels and
archangels, and all the company of heaven, we laud
and magnify Thy glorious name, evermore praising
Thee, and saying, Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God of
hosts, heaven and earth are full of Thy glory, Glory
be to Thee, O Lord most high. AMEN.

THE ADMINISTRATION OF SACRAMENTS
THE LORD’S PRAYER

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy
name. Thy kingdom come,
Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven. Give us
this day our daily bread; and forgive us our
trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against
us: and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us
from evil; for thine is the kingdom, and the power,
and the glory forever. Amen.

THE PRAYER OF THANKSGIVING

O Lord, our heavenly Father, we Thy humble servants
desire Thy fatherly goodness mercifully to accept this
our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving; most humbly
beseeching Thee to grant that, by the merits and death
of Thy Son, our Saviour Jesus Christ, and through faith
in His blood, we and Thy whole Church may obtain the
remission of our sins, and all other benefits of His
passion. And we offer and present unto Thee, O Lord,
our souls and bodies, to be a reasonable, holy, and
living sacrifice; humbly beseeching Thee that all we
who are partakers of this holy communion may be
filled with Thy grace and heavenly benediction. And
although we are unworthy, through our manifold sins,
to offer unto Thee any sacrifice, yet we beseech Thee
to accept this our bounden duty and service; not
weighing our merits, but pardoning our offenses,
through Jesus Christ our Lord; by Whom, and with
Whom, in the unity of The Holy Ghost, all honor and
glory be unto Thee, O Father Almighty, world without
end. Amen.

THE GLORIA IN EXCELSIS

Glory be to God on high, and on earth peace,
goodwill toward men! We praise Thee, we bless
Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give
thanks to Thee for Thy great glory. O Lord God
heavenly King, God the Father Almighty! O Lord,
the only begotten Son Jesus Christ: O Lord God,
Lamb of God, Son of the Father, that takest away
the sins of the world, have mercy upon us. Thou
that takest away the sins of the world, have mercy
upon us. Thou that takest away the sins of the
world, receive our prayer. Thou that sittest at the
right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.
For Thou only art Holy; Thou only art the Lord;

91

Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most
high in the glory of God the Father. AMEN.
May the peace of God, which passeth all
understanding, keep your hearts and minds in the
knowledge and love of God, and of his Son Jesus
Christ our lord; and the blessing of God Almighty, the
Father, the Son, and the Holy Ghost, be among you and
remain with you always. Amen.
