Technology is a Good Servant But a Dangerous Master

Coursework GEEC 1052

TECHNOLOGY IS A GOOD SERVANT BUT A DANGEROUS
MASTER!

In his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech in 1921, Christian Louis Lange observed of
technological achievements in the twentieth century, "Technology is a good servant but a bad
master." That comment forewarned that technology could turn into an unmanageable tool,
despite the fact that it is a very valuable tool that aids humans in their daily lives. To put it
another way, technology can be a useful instrument that aids in the advancement of civilisation
or a deadly weapon that aids in the annihilation of a community. This is because technology can
be used to perform work in the same way that a slave can.

The world is becoming more modern by the day. Human hands generate more things as a result
of their creativity and invention. From a small child to a guy in his fifties, the majority of
individuals hold a smartphone. In reality, the child was exposed to technology at an early age.
Nowadays, technology, particularly smartphones, is extremely valuable for students'
assignments, coursework, and other tasks. They are not, however, permitted to bring their
smartphones onto school grounds. Their smartphones will be confiscated if they do so.

Student’s school issue

Why are students not permitted to bring their smartphones to class? Even the smartphone
simplifies and makes everything more easier for students? Regardless of the reasons for not
allowing students to bring their smartphones, this is due to the fact that smartphones can
distract kids. They will be distracted in class, cheat on exams, or, worst of all, become victims of
cyberbullying. To bolster the cause, Connie Fawcett, a high school teacher in Oklahoma (Keima
9), says, "students consistently use them for a great deal of personal contacts via social media
when they should be paying attention in class." One of the most popular ways to communicate
is through social media.

Child’s brain

The technology is also beneficial in the development of a child's brain. They can learn more by
tapping on the screen of their iPhones. With its animations, noises, and other features, an
application like 'You Tube' is immensely appealing. Even though they have yet to learn to spell

and speak, they appear to be really interested when viewing it. However, this circumstance must
be monitored by a parent or guardian. They will become obsessed with it if they do not observe
it. They will bring the smartphone with them everywhere they go, at any time of day or night.
The National Sleep Foundation (NSF) has developed age-specific recommendations for total
daily sleep needs:

What happens if they don't get adequate rest? This is a very serious situation. It can affect their
mental health if they don't get enough sleep. The scenario is similar to that of an intoxicated
person, in which decisions are delayed and impeded, attention is shortened, and memory
function is harmed. Parents should teach their children to sleep on time before it is too late by
turning off all devices one hour before bedtime, remaining them off until after breakfast, leaving
devices outside bedrooms overnight, and setting devices to non-blue light “night mode” from
supper to breakfast. As a result, the conclusion is that children's sleep patterns should begin at
a young age.

Like Frog Underneath Coconut Shell

Aside from that, technology is our servant when we utilise it to keep track of what our friends are
up to and celebrate their accomplishments. We can track their progress, how their lives are
going, what they do, and so on, even though we are a long way away. In addition, our bond with
them will grow stronger. We use ‘Instagram,' ‘Twitter,' and ‘Facebook,' for example, to upload
photos and status updates that can be seen by others. We can also utilise them to watch
movies, films, or dramas with family or friends when we are bored. Furthermore, we can use
technology to relieve tension by listening to music on Joox or Youtube, playing computer games
with others, or viewing live footage from a part of the world we only dream of.

Meanwhile, technology is our master when we are continuously looking for flaws in someone's
status post to make ourselves heard and despise seeing other people's joy. We are too busy to
keep up with other people's lives 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by reloading twitter, instagram,
and other social media platforms. Furthermore, when we constantly count every 'like' on our
most recent upload, have no time to enjoy time with family, and continually scrolling the phone
screen without limit.

Conclusion
In a nutshell, we need technology to serve as a servant, not a master. When it comes to
technology, we must exercise caution. As a result, we must divide our time wisely in order to
maximise the benefits of technology while minimising losses. If we are students, we should use
technology to expand our study resources. As parents, we should not allow our children to use
their phones without restriction. And, as teachers, we should be aware of our pupils' behaviour
in order to produce kids with a superior identity.
