INTRODUCTION

Communication is the key to social integration. Communication is the exchange of
information and feeling or ideas, which allow the majority of people to get the news of all sides.
In most cases, language poses a significant barrier to communication between different cultures
or communities. In the 21st century, the world has become a global community. This means
that different cultural backgrounds are now readily integrating than ever before. In the
workplace also, communication both verbal and non-verbal is at the foundation of everything
we do. No matter how poor one might be in communication, it is easy to learn the skill of
communication the right training.

Communication in the 21st century has significantly changed as compared to
communication in the 20th and 19th centuries. Keeping in touch with one another has been the
trademark of the 21st century. In addition, the people always used communication every day to
let people know what they are doing or thinking even feeling which people are received by voice,
picture or chat. Moreover, communication technologies have made it simple to communicate to
friends in the other side of the world by calling them using mobile phone, e-mailing them and
writing in our web pages using social networks, For example, WeChat, WhatsApp, KakaoTalk,
and Line. All of this applied communication in 21st century give a big impact and very helpful
towards the communication for example, learning process in education and even in
organization.

In addition, through technology, people from all corners of the world are able to
communicate with each other quickly and easily. It has changed our life for the better. In the

APPLIED COMMUNICATION IN 21ST CENTURY IN CONTEXT OF “WECHAT”

WeChat or Weixin is a tencent-developed Chinese multi-purpose messaging, social
media and mobile payment app. It was first launched in 2011, and in 2018 it became one of the
largest independent mobile apps in the world. WeChat has several apps including video chat,
voice calling, SMS, sports, and scanning QR code that will improve communication outcomes,
increase trust in the organization, reduce public anxiety and help key stakeholders to make
better decision.

According to the article “Applications of Mobile Social Media: WeChat Among
Academic Libraries in China”, I have found that around one third of libraries use WeChat as
a promotional tool to promote their collections and services to the users for example, searching
for catalogues, checking loans, renewals, recalls, browsing history messages, or inquiring about
talks.

There are several advanced features and functions of WeChat towards Libraries in
China that have been discussed in these article. First is, Navigation Features. With the
navigation features, the system automatically reacts to users ' input of information in the
absence of human intervention. If the navigation service is not given, the user does not know
what words, letters or numbers to enter in order to obtain information and may be unsure of
how to proceed, especially when first using the program.

Second advanced features and functions of WeChat towards Libraries in China is Self-
Inquiry Information. Users insert text, letters, or numbers in the dialog box based on navigation
instructions for requests for notes, talks, and seat information. The official account
management system of WeChat answers automatically according to specified modules, such
as "announcement," "reading," or "sitting" when followers insert words or letters in the chat
window. If the program does not suit a user's input of information, a one-to - one
communication may be sent by librarians. Welcome information, services offered, suggestions
and comments, and send a message to the mailbox. This is important for collecting feedback
through the library WeChat official account. Enter “h” or “help” to view more details.

Moreover, based on the article “Application of WeChat in English Teaching” have
stated about the function and use of WeChat as a communication tool to the users in English
Teaching. With the introduction of online learning at universities and colleges, English

education is increasingly concentrating on the combination of digital teaching theory and
teaching experience. Most importantly, the full implementation of online education creates a
good environment for learning English for students.

The characteristics and advantages of WeChat application in English teaching are to
form students’ learning center, and fully inspire the students’ subjective motivation. Different
teaching materials in the classroom can effectively enhance the learning enthusiasm of
students. However, the use of WeChat's voice feature can help students get rid of the fact's
nervous emotion of the face-to-face communication, which will better achieve the purpose of
oral practice.

Next, the characteristics and advantages of WeChat application in English teaching are
to improve the Content and Efficiency of English Teaching. The application of WeChat further
improves the interaction of learning experience by students through the mobile phone terminal
at any time, such as group chat feature, making it possible to provide a forum for class
discussion. Students can organize their research and study according to their actual situation
and educators can use WeChat to publish additional materials. Furthermore, in the discussion
phase, students will practice their writing skills and grammar points, improve listening abilities
through WeChat's voice feature. In this case, the learning effects of students are improved, and
the learning content and speed are very well arranged by teachers.

APPLIED COMMUNICATION IN 21ST CENTURY IN CONTEXT OF “KAKAO
TALK”

Kakao Talk application provides mobile lifestyle services that make everyday

The link social interaction and learning method give an effectiveness of improving the
English speaking ability of Korean university students through the medium of mobile devices.
According the article adopting smartphone-based blended learning: an experimental study of
the implementation of Kakao Talk and Mocafé focus on the delivery of blended learning in
private sector education, in the context of middle school level teaching at an English institute.
It were integrated with an offline class at a private language institute. According to Graham
(2006), blended learning can be defined as a combination of two models of learning such as
online and offline course. Through using Kakao Talk application it easy for lecturer and student
to communicate because it consists of associate in initial face-to-face meeting, weekly online

videos to lecturer within the chat room without having to leave the conversation hanging. It
provides convenient personalization features, helping students find video content of choice in
the fastest manner. This all methods help students to improving the ability of speaking in
English as it can be access anytime at anywhere.

Other than that, this online application consider in conduct of an online writing
activities for the university students subject. As it is one of the new technology that applies
communication in the 21st century that can help students in the modern era to enhance their
writing skills. Using this application which learners had a positive effect on language
development and gain self-efficacy. In previous studies, there is a lack of interaction between
teacher and student. So, to overcome these limitations, through smartphone applications it were
implemented in order to increase the ability of students to interact with the lecturer at their
leisure. (Kim & Kwon, 2012; Kukulska-Hulme, 2007; Sharples, 2006). As the students interact
with lecturer they can gain knowledge by asking to make them more understand, thus can
improve in the online writing activities. Besides, with online supplementary classes also which
allow students used smartphone applications to complete assignments as the Kokoa Talk also
serve educational content that is optimized for viewing on a mobile device of blended with
face-to-face offline classes. These application were primarily chosen because they were

APPLIED COMMUNICATION IN 21ST CENTURY IN CONTEXT OF “LINE”

According to article Enhancing College Students’ Environmental Protection Awareness
through a Mobile LINE Application in English Public Speaking Course by Ru-Chu Shih, 2013,
LINE are messaging applications created by Japan after the Tsunami invaded Japan in 2011.
As we know, after the natural disaster, there will be destruction of development that the
government has built including communication channels. Normal communication channels
have been broken down and Line applications have been developed by internet company
Naver. Initially, Naver Internet Company developed application LINE for its employees only
as an internet-based communications tool. However, Naver later opened his application to the
Japanese public at the end of the year where it quickly became very popular, before gaining
popularity in other Asian countries.

In addition, LINE is used in most Asian countries because LINE has grown and is based
in Japan. Most Japan people use this app on their smartphones, so many Asian countries with
strong ties to Japan started using this app around 2013. Since Japan is the most important
economy in the region, and the basic emotions come with this service is also made by Asian
designers to make it more friendly to Asian users, not Westerners. In line with this, Line
companies have also focused on Asian markets, such as Indonesia, Thailand, Vietnam and
other Asian countries. As a result, LINE is the No.1 Messenger app in Asia.

LINE application offers users very useful services. Among the services provided is
offering its users a way to call and message friends. Users can send free one-on-one and group
texts to friends or family anytime and anywhere. LINE application also available for a variety
of smartphone devices (iPhone, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and Nokia) and even
your PC. Other than that users can keep up with news and entertainment. Getting access to the
news users care about used to involve some work, but with the advent of the LINE application,
there are a million and one ways to keep abreast of even the most obscure of news sources.

According to news in Tokyo, Japan – December 16, 2014, included as a new feature
in this update, the mobile payment service “LINE Pay” has now been released globally.
Besides, LINE is used in a variety of scenes throughout users’ daily lives, and by capitalizing
on the LINE platform, with its impressive user base, LINE Pay’s release will provide a means
through which users can make secure and convenient payments anytime, anywhere, straight
through their smartphone.

The last one is LINE can stream music. According to news on Tokyo, Japan – June 11,
2015 – LINE Corporation, owner and operator of the free call and messaging app LINE,
announced the official launch of the on-demand music subscription service “LINE MUSIC,”
for Android and iPhone devices. Besides, LINE MUSIC is a music subscription service on
demand, different from the radio style subscription service commonly found in Japan. With
LINE MUSIC, users have the freedom to listen to the songs and artists of their choice,
whenever and wherever they are. They can also create their favorite music playlists. The first
wave of music to join the launch included Japanese music, Western music, K-pop, anime
music, and more.

With the development of Line applications throughout Asia, LINE now offers a number
of features that expand applications into the field of social networking. According to article
Big data analytics for investigating Taiwan Line sticker social media marketing by Shu-Hsien
Liao and Szu-Yu Hsu (2019) the service provides stickers and emoticons, many of which can
be purchased through Shop Theme and Sticker Shop. In addition, LINE has more stickers and
emoticons than Whatsapp. As we know, these adhesives as well as emoticons can appeal to
consumers, especially teenagers. Adolescents prefer to use stickers and emoticons to express
their feelings while chatting with their friends and it also allows users to exchange multimedia
files and engage in one-to-one and one-to-many communication with text, pictures, animation
and sound. However, LINE also includes timeline features such as Facebook and Twitter
timeline functions.

Additionally, LINE users can share multimedia files among LINE application users.
User-transferred files that can record voice, video and picture files. Voice and video files that
users send may be recorded on the spot and transmitted. Next, the free online camera photo
editor application helps users to take pictures and even edit them lightly before users save them
in the gallery or users can transfer to friends through the LINE application or users can share
the pictures to other social media accounts such as Instagram and Facebook.

LINE also use for education. This can be proven by article Enhancing College Students’
Environmental Protection Awareness through a Mobile LINE Application in English Public
Speaking Course by Ru-Chu Shih (2013), prior studies prove that blended learning or the blend
teaching approach is positive and effective on learning. In the present study, a blended
instruction combining LINE application and traditional in-class presentations are used in the
English Public Speaking (EPS) course to promote the students’ awareness of environmental

protection such as global warming and food safety as well as to enhance students’ foreign
language learning motivation and effectiveness.

In addition, following the 18-week instruction that combined classroom and LINE
presentations, most students have made significant progress in their English-language skills,
including attitude, articulation, and overall stage performance. From the student interviews, the
students also stated that using LINE to help learn English in a language is very interesting and
useful. They also think that EPS is less stressful and scary. In addition, students also
emphasized that they used LINE to record EPS assignments. This LINE application is very
simple and very time-consuming. This is because they can record assignments everywhere
regardless of where and when they have internet lines. This fact proves that the LINE
application has not only helped in communication in the 21st century but has also become very
popular in learning in this era of advanced technology.

In conclusion, with the global technology advancement, there is a great shift in
communication in the 21st century. There has been the development of social media platforms
where people engage in charts and exchange ideas and life experiences. These social media
platforms have changed the world into a global community. When used effectively, they are a
good way of communicating and relaying information between people.

WhatsApp for communicating with their friends during their leisure time. They also exchange
images, audio and video files with their friends using WhatsApp. It also showed that WhatsApp

Moreover, WhatsApp application contains WhatsApp Group Discussion. It is a
WhatsApp application feature that can form a group to discuss particular topic. This feature
basically used by students for education purpose. The use of WhatsApp will provide suitability
in communication between the lecturers and the students. It creates an encouraging atmosphere
in the classroom, forming a discussion and ease of sharing information. Hence, WhatsApp

respondents use this application during ward rounds, clinics, procedure rooms and during on
calls. Information giving, discussions, clinical questions, instruction on giving comments and
administrative question and responses are common reasons why they use WhatsApp.
Information technology has been advanced and extensively used for social interaction. This
same technology can be used in a medical setting to improve communication among medical
teams for patient safety. WhatsApp is the communication tool used by physicians too. This is
because when it comes to work of health care professionals, smartphones improve
communication between them. WhatsApp enable to decrease the response time in
communication and it is efficient during consultation. It also conveys fast information during
clinical communication that can reduce medical errors.

Last but not least, WhatsApp application is widely used for business purpose.
Nowadays, selling activities become much easier and simpler by using the online system. The
impact of WhatsApp on business has been significant. According founders of WhatsApp, Brian
Acton, “With encryption, anyone can conduct business or talk to a doctor without worrying
about eavesdroppers.” (Metz, 2016). With the new encryption capabilities of WhatsApp, its
use as a communication tool that can show to the outside countries and organizations. The
British have occupied the Chinese market using WhatsApp for marketing. High end retailers
such as Harrods or Selfridges and dealerships of luxury cars have penetrated the global markets
and they are applying WhatsApp technology to create a network of potential customers by

analyse the sales, production and economic trends to create appropriate marketing and sales
databases. Through WhatsApp, the users follow ups on the customers using WhatsApp instead
of direct phone calls. Business person also can use WhatsApp’s calling feature to talk with their
international customers. Meanwhile, in Brazil, WhatsApp has become more advanced from
small businesses to government agencies to manage everything from transactions to the
relationships. The users’ expectation changed to interact with companies and brands online,
and it makes many companies use WhatsApp messaging to fulfil customer expectations.

As a conclusion, WhatsApp application is widely used in this 21st century. Commonly
this application not only used by youth, but it also used by adult generation. Most of the
countries in world use this application for their own purpose. For instance, education,
healthcare, communication, business and others. It has been proved that WhatsApp is a good
communication tool for people to convey the information wherever they are. Free application
and use of internet network attracted more people to keep on using it. However, all people
should use this kind of application wisely and for good purpose. Hope this application always
keep improving time by time and gives more benefits to the users.

CONCLUSION

As a conclusion, there are many applied communications that have been used by all
people around the world. Wechat, Line, KakaoTalk and also WhatsApp give many advantages
to all people in their daily life. For example, in term of business or transactions, education and
others. The evolution of technology nowadays makes many software developers to develop
more applications to all people especially in context of communication. Through these
applications, the communications between them become easier and more effective. The
information also can be distributed easily in virtual platform to the users. We hope with this
era of modernisation, there are more applications that will be developed by the web
development companies for the new generation. The new features also can be improved in
these current applications to attract more people to use it as a tool for their long-distance
communication.
