Arshdeep Singh hails from Jalandhar, Punjab. He won the ‘2018 Young Wildlife
Photographer of the Year’ award at the age of ten. He f rst started photography when
he was f ve years old. He received a camera and lens from his father. He says that
his biggest inspiration is his father, Randeep Singh, who has been practising wildlife
photography for a long time. It was Arshdeep’s candid photo of two owlets peeping

out of a waste pipe that clinched him the title.
The shot was taken when he and his father went on a trip to the wetland in
Kanji, Kapurthala district, in Punjab. Initially, both of them thought that the pipe was
empty. However, Arshdeep rested his camera on the window of the car and when
the owlets popped out, he captured the moment.
According to Arshdeep, patience is virtue when it comes to wildlife photography.
Snapping the perfect shot may require the photographer to wait for a long period of
time and, sometimes, they may have to do so in uncomfortable situations.

Wahid : Boon, shall we go to the beach tomorrow?
Boon Siew : Sounds like a good idea! We’ve spent months in lockdown. I’ve
been so bored at home. I’m so glad that the number of cases is
decreasing.
Wahid : So am I! I’m over the moon that we are now allowed to go out.
Shall we take the bus? Bus 3A goes straight to the beach. We’ll
be there in less than 15 minutes.
Boon Siew : I don’t think it’s such a good idea at the moment. I don’t want to
get into a crowded bus when the Covid-19 isn’t completely gone
yet. Why don’t we just cycle there? It’s safer and we can do our
part to keep the environment clean. We can leave early in the
morning. It’ll only take us about half an hour to get there.
Wahid : You’re right. Also, there’s a special cycling lane which we can use.
It’ll keep us away from cars and motorcyles.
Boon Siew : Don’t forget to bring along your mask and hand sanitiser!
Wahid : I won’t. I’ll call you later and let you know if I’m given the green
light.
Boon Siew : Okay!
