smoke signals carrier pigeon telegraph wireless radio telephone

handheld
devices e-mail Internet mobile phone fax

In the past, communication was diff cult. People found it hard to send a message to
other people, especially when they were far from each other. In ancient China, people
used to use smoke signals to alert other people if there was a war. As time passed by,
people started to use carrier pigeons to send messages. However, some carrier pigeons
could be shot to death or even got lost on their way to the receivers.

In the early 20th century, people stopped using carrier pigeons as radio telegraphy
and telephony had been developed. During that time, the most popular method of
long-distance communication was using the Morse code developed by Samuel Morse.
People used dots, dashes and spaces to encode and decode a message. Soon, the
Morse code was phased out and replaced by technologies such as the wireless radio,
the telephone, the fax and the Internet.

Over the years, technology has changed how we communicate. Today, people
make good use of the Internet and handheld devices to do the shopping online, attend
online classes and hold virtual meetings, just to name a few. It is very convenient. We
can even keep ourselves updated on the latest news without stepping out of our homes.

Circle the correct answer.

1. Which is the best title for the article above?
A The Internet B The History of Communication
C The Importance of Communication D The Greatest Scientist of All Time

2. What was the means of communication before the invention of the telephone?
A The fax B The e-mail
C The telegraph D The mobile phone
