A forest is not only home to plants and animals but also provides us with valuable
resources such as food, oxygen, medicine and fuel. Therefore, we should take care of our
forests to preserve life on Earth. The following are simple ways to save our forests.
You can save more trees from being cut by using less paper. You can do this by
using cloth napkins instead of paper towels, using both sides of a piece of paper, using
recycled paper and of course, practising recycling. Books use paper. Instead of buying
new books, share, exchange or borrow books. You should also donate the books you no
longer want to a second-hand bookstore or library.
You should not wait to plant seedlings or trees on Earth Day. You should plant trees
or shrubs in your garden or join tree-planting activities in your neighbourhood. More trees
mean more clean air. If trees are removed for development, they should be replanted
elsewhere.
Finally, when visiting parks or trekking, stay on the trails. Do not damage or destroy
the plants in the jungle. Be careful if you are camping and have a campf re. Always watch
the f re and make sure that it is completely put out when you leave. Helping to prevent
forest f res will also help to save our forests.

Three dishes which are usually served during Hari Raya celebrations are lemang,
rendang and ketupat.
Lemang is made of glutinous rice, coconut milk and salt. It is cooked in a hollowed
bamboo stick. The inside of the stick is lined with banana leaves so the glutinous rice will
not stick to the bamboo. The bamboo sticks are placed facing up and leaned against
a wire rod over a small pit f re. The bamboo sticks are then cooked for about four or
f ve hours. They are turned often so the rice is evenly cooked.
Rendang is a meat dish which is rich in spices. The main ingredient is beef which
is cooked in thick coconut milk and spices. All the ingredients are cooked over a slow
f re for about one and a half hours so the meat will be tender and until the coconut milk
has fully evaporated. Rendang is best served with steamed rice.
Ketupat is a rice dumpling cooked inside a palm leaf casing. The casing is made
using two strips of palm leaves woven tightly so the rice does not spill out of the casing.
The ketupat is then cooked in boiling water. Once cooked, it is left to cool. It is cut
before serving. Ketupat is usually eaten with rendang or satay and peanut sauce.
1. Which of the following is not one of the ingredients used to make lemang?

C Meat. D Salt.

Dear Kenny,
金榜新焦点英文, 版权所有·侵权必究
I’m happy to hear that you’re going camping at the national park this holiday.
You must be very excited! I’d be happy to share some safety tips I learnt when I
went camping there last year.
First, never forget that the animals you see are wild. If you do see an animal,
do not try to approach it, feed it or take pictures with it. Second, bring plenty of bottled
water. Remember to drink a lot of water when you participate in strenuous activities
such as biking, kayaking or hiking. Don’t drink water from a stream or river. It will be
better to pack some high-energy snack foods such as nutrition bars or nuts in order
to keep up your strength.
If you have bought a new pair of hiking boots during your trip, use them a few
times f rst before wearing them to hike. This will help prevent injury. You also won’t get
painful blisters on your feet. If you haven’t used your camping equipment, practise
setting it up before you go on the trip. This way you can pitch your tent without any
problem at the campf re.
I hope my tips are useful and will help you prepare for your trip. I would love
to hear about your camping trip when you get back.
Your friend,
Yu Huan
1. Why did Yu Huan write to Kenny?
A To give Kenny some safety tips about camping at a national park.
B To help Kenny plan for his camping trip at a national park.
C To give Kenny a list of things to pack for the camping trip.

Subject Interesting activities to do in Taman Negara
金榜新焦点英文, 版权所有·侵权必究
Hello Marcus,
Thank you for your e-card. I had a good birthday celebration with my cousins. You must
be excited about your trip to Taman Negara this weekend. The fun activities my family and
I enjoyed when we went there last year are still fresh in my mind.
You must go on the canopy walkway. It is 40 metres above the ground so you will have a
bird’s eye view of your surrounding f ora and fauna. You should also go on a night-jungle
walk. Besides insects, you may catch a glimpse of a tapir or a deer. Another activity you
should include in your plans is a visit to an aborigine settlement. You can see how the people
live in the jungle. They will show you how they hunt using a blowpipe.
Riding the rapids is another must-do activity. A skilled boatman will steer a wooden boat
through seven rapids down Sungai Tembeling. My family and I loved every minute of the
ride and I am sure you will too. There is also a boat cruise up Sungai Tahan to Lata Berkoh.
Take time to enjoy the beauty of the f ora and fauna along the river.
I have to go now but I will write again. Bye.
Your friend,
Jehan
