I SUBJECT−VERB AGREEMENT
Read the text below. The words in bold are verbs and the words in italics are subjects.

Jane has a bicycle. Aiman takes out his tent.
She is riding her bicycle. He wants to pitch the tent.
The verb in a sentence must always agree with the subject.
1. A singular verb must be used with a singular subject.
• In the examples above, ‘Jane’, ‘She’, ‘Aiman’ and ‘He’ are singular subjects.
• So, the verbs ‘has’, ‘is’, ‘takes’ and ‘wants’ are also in the singular form.
Amir and Tien Zi are running.
The girls have bicycles.
They are riding their bicycles. They want to see who reaches
the f nishing line f rst.
2. A plural verb must be used with a plural subject.
• In the examples above, ‘The girls’, ‘Amir and Tien Zi’ and ‘They’ are plural subjects.
• So, the verbs ‘have’, ‘are’ and ‘want’ are also in the plural form.
Common English Mistakes
Use the subjects with the correct verbs:

1. Simple Sentence
A simple sentence has one subject and one verb in it. In the passage above, the f rst and second

2. Compound Sentence
A compound sentence is made up of two or more simple sentences. The simple sentences are
usually joined by conjunctions such as ‘and’, ‘or’, ‘but’, ‘because’ or ‘so’ to form a compound
sentence. In the passage above, the last sentence is a compound sentence because it is made
up of a few simple sentences joined by the word ‘and’.
