  English Year 5B  Unit 2  Countable and Uncountable Nouns

Countable nouns are things which can be counted. They have both
singular and plural forms.
可数名词是可计算的事物,具有单数和复数形式。
e.g. a bird/one car (singular)   two glasses/four boys (plural)

Uncountable nouns are things which cannot be counted.
They have no plural forms.
不可数名词是不可计算的事物。不可数名词没有复数形式。
e.g. air   coffee   strength   heat

plenty of boats / water

• ‘Any’ is usually used in negative sentences and questions. ‘Some’ is usually used in
questions which expect a positive reply.

通常“any”用于否定句和疑问句,而“some”用于预料会得到肯定回答的疑问句中。
e.g. I do not want any cold drinks.

Is there any rice in the container?
No, there isn’t any rice in the container.

Will you please pass me some pepper?

A simile is a word or phrase used to compare one thing to another. The word
‘as’ or ‘like’ is usually used. An adjective is used in between ‘as’. A noun is used
to symbolise the thing we describe.
明喻应用词或短语来比较两件事物,通常与“as”或“like”连用。形容词用

An adjective describes a noun in three forms of comparisons:
the positive, the comparative and the superlative.

形容词以三个比较等级来描述名词:原级、比较级和最高级。

Here are more basic rules for forming the comparatives and superlatives of adjectives:
以下是更多有关比较级和最高级形容词的构成方式:

• For a single-syllable adjective that ends with a vowel and a consonant, its final
consonant is often repeated.

词尾是一个元音字母和一个辅音字母的单音节形容词,其最后一个辅音字母必须重复。
e.g. big – bigger – biggest

• For a two-syllable adjective that ends with a ‘-y’, replace the ‘-y’ with ‘-i’ and add
‘-er’ or ‘-est’.

• Some adjectives use different words in their comparative and superlative forms.
