My mother raised her eyebrows. “Really?” I nodded solemnly. “Well, don’t be up

too late. You don’t want to fall asleep during lessons tomorrow.”

The next time I looked at the clock on the wall, I realised that it was close to

2.00 a.m. I stretched, yawned and switched the lights off. I went over to the window
and opened it. Fresh air f owed into the room and I took a deep breath of it. As I was
about to turn away from the window, I noticed a shadow by the gate. I squinted and
was shocked to see a man trying to climb over it.


I blinked a couple of times. Yes, there’s no doubt about what I saw. I tiptoed
into my parents room and woke my parents up. My father walked quietly towards

the window. He looked grim by what he saw. Without wasting another moment, he
called the police. Then, he went into the living room and released Brownie, our German
shepherd, out into the porch.


Brownie growled menacingly and barked repeatedly. My father switched on the
lights and we saw the man cowering in a corner. Just then, the police arrived.
