I Read Mia’s travel journal and answer the questions below.




Today I'm in the city of Malacca. It's a historical city that was under the
inf uence of the Portuguese, the Dutch and the English. Over here is the Red
Square, also known as the Dutch Square. The red buildings like the Stadhuys
or townhall were built in 1650 during the Dutch inf uence. Look at the colourful
rickshaws. I would like to ride in one of those if only the music that's playing
in it isn't so loud!

In front of me now is the replica of Flor de la Mar, the ship that sailed and
sank in the Straits of Malacca. Inside the ship is a museum displaying the statue
of Hang Tuah, the legendary Malay warrior! Oh dear, my stomach's growling
and it's time to eat. I think I'll stop for some chicken rice balls now.

Lunch is over and I'm back on my feet. I'm climbing these steps to see the
ruins on Saint Paul's Hill. Oh, what a panoramic view from up here. I can see
the entire Malacca city! Alright, it’s time to go down. Here, at the bottom of the
hill is Porta de Santiago, which is one of the four main gates of the A Famosa
fortress, built in 1511 by the Portuguese.

As I walk along Jonker Street, I notice the
colourful buildings and the rows of shops. That
reminds me that I have to get some souvenirs for
my friends. Jonker Street's night market operates
on weekends. You can f nd a variety of things
from food to street performance here.

Guess that's all for today. One thing's for
sure, I'm having such a good time.
