"Last year the Georgetown High School PTSA approved an on-campus Leadership academy
module for rising 9th and 10th graders, which would point the students to other opportunities to get
involved with on campus groups and off campus groups. The module would comprise of inviting
speakers from the community organizations, other community and district leaders, and group leaders
of GHS student organizations. The cost will be minimal mostly comprised of printing of materials."

This is the proposal that was approved in 2016.

Proposal: To develop a program on campus to empower 9th/ 10th grade students to become leaders by
presenting to them, opportunities within campus organizations, and community groups.

THE GHS PTSA STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY

The GHS PTSA Student Leadership Academy is a new leadership program open to all GHS PTSA Student
members in the 9th and 10th grades. This leadership program uses a holistic approach to provide a solid
foundation in leadership philosophies, skills, and growth through collaboration and learning. This
program is designed for both current and aspiring student leaders interested in gaining in-depth
knowledge and training in leadership.

Program Mission: To transform students into exceptional leaders empowered to create solutions for a
healthier community.

BENEFITS OF THE STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY:

• Students can expect special speakers and interactive topic sessions.
• Students will gain knowledge of the local community and opportunities that exist for leadership.
• Students learn, grow, and develop alongside fellow colleagues in areas of leadership foundation

and philosophies, as well as, personal and professional development.

Upon program completion, each participant will receive a program certificate.

Eligibility Requirements
Members must be GHS students in the 9th -10th grades interested in pursuing leadership roles in
clubs and activities and / or enhancing their leadership skills in the community.

Time Commitment
1 meeting per month (or other time frame - TBD). Must attend at least 4 of 7 (or a majority) of
offered sessions.

Meets
Wednesdays during Flex (2pm) concurrent with PTSA meetings, Place TBD

Procedure For Joining
Interested students must fill out an application to join and be current members of the GHS
PTSA. Membership Applications & program sign up will be available online or at the counselor’s
office (or other on campus location).

Description
The Student Leadership Academy is designed to develop student’s leadership and management
skills. This course is made up of a series of seminars that explore the theoretical and practical
side of leadership development. Lectures and discussions will be facilitated by education,
business, and community leaders.

Community service hour opportunities may be available for GISD PTA Projects and other
activities if approved by the campus team as appropriate.

Membership Limit
None

Completion
Completion of the course (at least 4 of 7 meetings, or a majority of the seminars offered) will
result in a certificate of completion and listing on the PTSA website (depending on parent
permission waivers, etc.).

LO: Student will learn how to manage conflict and different personalities to achieve the best results
for their group.

Communication Styles

LO: Students will learn about different communication styles and how they work together

Topics:

• Professional Communication basics
• Email/Phone communication
• Communication in the workplace
• Public Speaking
