The Environmental Science Center’s Fall 2016
NATURAL CONNECTIONS

ESC Named Organization of the Year!

We learn and teach from the environment and we hope to
inspire others to safeguard it. ESC’s community and school
programs are designed to promote environmental
stewardship and academic achievement through science-
based education. Personal stories and feedback from
students, teachers and residents have helped us judge our
impact and guide our programs.

Receiving the Outstanding Organization of the Year Award by
Northwest Aquatic and Marine Educators (NAME) reinforces
our efforts and strengthens our communal commitments.
NAME’s mission is to create, support and inspire an
international community of marine and aquatic educators
throughout the Pacific Northwest, so we are honored to
receive their recognition and partnership.

Congratulations to YOU, our supporters and community
leaders. With your help we are able to put our mission into
action. Join us in celebrating how the ESC community
contributes to a sustainable future through quality
environmental science education!

ESC is grateful to have New Editions
printing services provided by:
More Students = More Heroes for Salmon
Doug Head CLU®, ChFC®
Financial Advisor Threatened salmon may have more of a fighting chance thanks to students
from Renton and Kent. ESC has been turning south King County students into
6840 Fort Dent Way Ste #150 environmental stewards through salmon-related hands-on field study programs
Tukwila, Wa 98188-2557 for more than a decade. Word spread upriver to Renton and Kent districts and
Ph: 206-246-2686 98 classes registered for the Salmon Heroes program. This almost
doubled last year’s participants and doubled the positive impacts for salmon by
reaching nearly 2,500 students.

In addition to our Normandy Park site, we recently received funding from the
NOAA BWET grant to make Cedar River Park in Renton another outdoor
classroom. This provides a unique opportunity for students to witness spawning
Sockeye and Chinook and learn from ESC naturalists about their important role
of being Salmon Heroes for Pacific salmon species.

Of six hands-on stations, highlights for students include testing the water quality
of the river, identifying and touching the organs of a salmon cadaver and
becoming a salmon in a class-wide game of survival to see if they can handle
the natural and man-made obstacles local fish face.

“I liked testing the water,” “I touched a heart,” “It’s not easy
being a salmon. They have a lot of challenges” are all student
takeaways.

ESC Salmon Heroes gain a new understanding of the challenges our local fish
encounter and how their choices can impact a salmon’s survival. They promise
to protect them and share their knowledge with others on their Salmon Heroes
pledge card.

“I'm going to keep this card until I'm 48 and share it with my
children and say ‘when I was your age I learned about how to
help the salmon. They are very important and you should
learn about them too.’” - fourth-grade student

The NOAA BWET grant also funds a new Advanced Salmon Heroes option.
Classes receive the same water test kits they were trained to use during their
field study. Students conduct additional tests on water sources near their
school. They submit their data to ESC and are encouraged to share their results
with their school, families, and community. With such a high increase in classes
and a waiting list to fill more, ESC is proud to see their school programs
empowering local youth to make positive changes in their community.

Your Gift Makes Lasting Impressions

A generous philanthropist matched all gifts in October and ESC gives MANY
THANKS to everyone who donated during the month. Because of you,
960 students can have meaningful outdoor experiences, growing and
supporting their environmental stewardship. Thank you for investing in
the youth of our community!

This holiday season consider asking friends and family to make a gift in your
honor. A gift gives students, who would not otherwise have the opportunity, a
chance to study local issues affecting our economy and environment.

ESC Ambassadors

Brenda Sullivan

If you have been to an ESC event, you have likely seen Brenda
assisting with a fun activity. From dialing in microscopes for families
to donating native plants for restoration events, Brenda has used her
science background as a tool to share her love of nature with others.
An already active community member, she is someone ESC can count
on to work with others at events orbehind the scenes on our Board of
Directors. Join us in thanking her for her involvement and then join her
in the center as she continues to help out during our After Hours
Beach Walks.

“I got involved with ESC because the environment (the non-human world that surrounds me and sustains me
physically and mentally) is my passion and ESC is the most local environmental organization I know. And once
I found out what ESC does, the vital service it performs in educating the next generation about the environment,
I realized that, without this service, in the future there will be no environment worthy of my passion.”

world without waste is represented in various ways
within our community.
