Crowe, Former Louisiana State Senator5-9-26People typically choose a political party based on the values and beliefs they identify with. Likewise, they usually vote for the candidates they believe best represent those same values.Slidell is widely known as a conservative city with strong traditional values. The majority of its voters identify as Republicans because they believe the Republican Party more closely reflects those values and principles. Certainly, there are conservatives in other parties, but it is important to remember what many Republicans believe their party stands for and why those beliefs matter to them locally here in Slidell. Many conservatives point to several national issues that directly impact Slidell.• Border Security: WHAT DOES THAT HAVE TO DO WITH US HERE IN SLIDELL? Republicans argue that Democratic border policies allowed millions of illegal immigrants into the country, creating concerns about public safety, a strain on our local resources, and future political influence or votes. Illegal immigrants ARE showing up at our local Slidell hospitals and ARE enrolled in our public schools utilizing resources that are supposed to be reserved for citizens . WE are paying for that. Is that fair? What party is responsible for this problem? The Democrats and their open border policy, disguised as the “humane thing to do” but really designed to get more votes. Is that appropriate, especially when millions of people are legally in line waiting to come into the US the right way? Many residents believe immigration enforcement should be strengthened, including cooperation between local law enforcement and federal agencies through programs such as 287(g). ICE WORK IS STILL ON-GOING HERE LOCALLY. WILL A DEMOCRAT ELECTED IN SLIDELL OPENLY & CONSISTENTLY ENDORSE 287(g) ENCOURAGING SLIDELL POLICE TO WORK WITH ICE TO GET RID OF VIOLENT ILLEGAL OFFENDERS OR BE PRESSURED BY THE PARTY TO DO WHAT THEY DEMAND?• Support for Law Enforcement: Conservatives often criticize “defund the police” movements led by Democrats and believe law enforcement agencies should be fully supported, funded, and respected. Many voters deserve to know whether local elected officials will strongly support the Slidell Police Department and public safety initiatives. • Government Shutdowns and Political Conflict: Many conservatives believe Democrats have used government funding battles and political gridlock as leverage against President Trump and Republican policies, creating disruptions that affect everyday people right here in Slidell. REMEMBER THE LINES AT THE AIRPORT? WE CAN THANK THE DEMOCRATS. Political Violence: Democrats' aggressive anti-Trump rhetoric is inspiring unstable individuals to commit acts of violence. DO WE WANT TO BREATH LIFE IN TO THE PEOPLE THAT RECENTLY DEMONSTRATED AT THE MAYOR'S PRAYER BREAKFAST RIGHT HERE IN SLIDELL? DEMOCRATS FUELED THESE CONFLICTS ALL OVER THE COUNTRY AND RIGHT HERE IN SLIDELL! POLITICAL RHETORIC SPEWED NATIONALLY IS HEARD BY LOTS OF PEOPLE EVERYDAY RIGHT HERE IN SLIDELL.LET’S BE HONEST.EVERY LOCAL ELECTION MATTERS AND PARTY AFFILIATION MATTERS. PARTY LABELS ARE THERE FOR A REASON. IT IS FOR THE PURPOSE OF TELLING VOTERS WHAT YOU STAND FOR. IF YOU STAND FOR THE POLICIES OF THE DEMOCRAT PARTY THAT BELIEVES IN TAKING THE LIVES OF INNOCENT BABIES, MARRIAGE OTHER THAN ONE MAN AND ONE WOMAN AND RACIAL GEREMANDERING FOR POLITICAL GAIN, THEN VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT.Choosing a political party is a conscious decision. A candidate consciously chooses to identify with a party and the ideology that comes with it. Recently, a Democrat-appointed member of the library board voted against restricting age-inappropriate material in our Slidell library, material many parents believe could expose innocent children to pornographic content. Fortunately, enough conservative Republicans on the board voted in favor of restricting access to that material. IT WAS A DEMOCRAT THAT DID NOT WANT TO PROTECT OUR CHILDREN.And to those on the far left who have read this far........this is not about book banning or book burning. It is about protecting children from inappropriate content! Don’t use our innocent children to support your lies!So why should anyone be surprised when elected officials act consistently with the party and ideology they chose to align themselves with? That, my friends, is a Democrat who will predictably function, at every opportunity, as a Democrat. In today’s world, if you choose to be or vote for a Democrat, you are joining with the likes of Kamala Harris, Hakeem Jeffries, Chuck Schumer, Bernie Sanders, AOC, Gavin Newsom and Nancy Pelosi. Is that what we really want in our local leaders? WOULD THE CITZEN/VOTER OF SLIDELL ELECT SOMEONE WHO SHARES THE POLICIES AND BELIEFS OF THESE PEOPLE? I THINK NOT!If you are a Democrat and proclaim that you DO NOT believe as your national party advocates, THEN CHANGE YOUR PARTY OR OPENLY DENOUNCE THEIR POLICIES! Millions of people all across our nation have already done so.You can be the nicest, smartest, most popular and the most effective public servant on the planet but THESE ARE NOT THE REASONS TO VOTE FOR YOU. IT IS YOUR PARTY LABEL AND ITS POLICIES AND PLATFORM THAT IDENTIFIES YOU AND THE LABEL THAT YOU CHOSE TO PROUDLY WEAR.Studies have consistently shown that local races can influence the direction, values, and priorities of the broader political system. Every elected office at any level counts! No matter your political affiliation, study the issues carefully, ask candidates direct questions, and vote according to the values and principles you believe are best for Slidell, Louisiana, and the future of our country.I will end with this pledge since there is still time to vote. “If you are a Democrat candidate seeking any office in St. Tammany Parish and will publicly denounce the policies and direction of today’s Democrat Party and will sign an agreement to change your party affiliation from Democrat, I will personally pay for a full-page advertisement in the Slidell Independent endorsing your campaign.”

You thought you could stop any time. Next thing you know, you’re hooked. What went through your mind when you read my opening sentences? Likely, you thought about an addictive behavior you or someone you care about is struggling with. But did “hatred” also cross your mind? Think about it. In this politically caustic environment, how often do we give in to hateful thoughts about people with whom we disagree? We foolishly thought we could handle a hostile thought now and then. That we could stop any time. But … the next thing we knew … we were hooked. Before long, we couldn’t stop ourselves. Those who disagree with us are clearly the enemy. The first mean, malicious thought was so enticing that it led to another mean thought. Now, thinking this way has become all-consuming. We act as if we can’t get enough of believing the worst of “them.” Consequently, our lives have changed in a way we didn’t expect or want. With so much hate filling our thoughts, we’re no longer a credible witness of Christ to the lost. We can’t read our Bible the same way. Even our other relationships seem different somehow. Why? Because our meanspirited thoughts have compromised our hearts. Just as it would have been better for an alcoholic to avoid that first sip or a gambler to avoid that first wager, it would be better for us to avoid that first bitter thought. But even if we’ve already started down that road, meditating on Philippians 4:8 can transform our thinking: “Finally, brothers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is just, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think about these things” (ESV). What would happen if we asked God to make us aware whenever we think something lesst h a n - p r a i s e wo r t h y about others, including “them”? It’s possible to strongly disagree with people without spit-firing snarky remarks in our hearts. Degradation will never lead to mutual love and respect in relationships with those on the other side. Snark will never allow us to explain our point of view. Instead, it closes the door to open communication. Forever. Furthermore, bitterness can sabotage all our relationships, including with people we want to share Christ with. No addictive behavior will get us where we want in life, especially in our relationships. Unless, of course, we become hooked on behaving more like Christ. (Sheryl Hilker Boldt, a Slidell High graduate, author of the blog, www.TodayCanBeDifferent.net. She can be reached at [email protected].) Slidell InspirationI was driving toward a new job in Houston, Texas in 1967. The music on the radio was interrupted with a breaking story. “Israel recaptured the Old City of East Jerusalem on June 7, 1967, during the third day of the Six-Day War.” I couldn’t have cared less. Several days later I was watching an interview from Jerusalem. The reporter asked Moshe Dayen, the one eyed Israeli general, with a black patch over his eye, “When will Isreal return Jerusalem to Jordan?” He replied, “When every boy and girl over the age of 18 lies dead in the streets of Jerusalem.” He was stating: “It ain’t never gonna happen.” I had no idea what was happening. I was in a bible study discussion recently, and the subject was Israel’s ancient right of ownership of Jerusalem. I related the aforementioned experience I had in 1967. A Christian Jew in attendance said the Bible records that King David purchased the land where the Temple was built. I was challenged to look unto that possibility. I discovered, the account of the acquisition of Isreal’s Temple land as recorded in First and Second Chronicles. “So, David gave Araunah 600 pieces of gold in payment for the threshing floor… David built an altar there to the LORD and sacrificed burnt offerings and peace offerings. … “But the LORD said to me [David], ‘You have killed many men in the battles you have fought. And since you have shed so much blood in my sight, you will not be the one to build a Temple to honor my name.” … So, Solomon began to build the Temple of the LORD in Jerusalem on Mount Moriah, where the LORD had appeared to David, his father. The Temple was built on the threshing floor of Araunah the Jebusite, the site that David had selected.” (1 Chronicles 21:25–26, 22:8 NLT) (2 Chronicles 3:1 NLT) Today, the Dome of the Rock sits atop Mount Moriah. When it comes to land there are only two ways to acquire it: First capture it or second gain legal title. Ancient and recent History records that Isreal own’s the land on which the Jewish Temple was constructed and now is occupied by the Islamic Dome of the Rock. Isreal liberated it in 1967. God created the land and promised it to Abraham. Joshua took possession of it. David bought it and Moshe Dayen took it back. If I were a judge in a property dispute I would adjudicate it belongs to Israel. God, according to the Bible, still has plans for that contested piece of Real Estate. What does it have to do with us? Everything! It’s proof positive that God will do what He says, even if it takes thousands of years to accomplish. You, like Jerusalem, were created by God, captured by the devil, and delivered by Jesus. God will give you up, right after Isreal gives up Jerusalem. It ain’t never gonna happen. Is the devil claiming to own you? Ask King Jesus to set you free. He will! (Pastor Morris St Angelo, Lead Minister of Slidell Ministers Association. Email: [email protected] Search for Morris St Angelo on YouTube and Facebook.) By MORRIS ST. ANGELO SLIDELL MINISTERS ASSOCIATIONI was very impressed by the enthusiastic sign waver in front of the oil change business. Maybe you saw the same person I saw. This employee energetically waved a sign that invitingly declared, “No Lines; No Waiting!” What a clever marketing strategy to attract business. No one likes to be part of a long line (or any line for that matter!) and no one really likes to wait. This business operator promised you would not have to endure either inconvenience. What efficiency! Imagine if our churches posted sign wavers with the same sign out in front to attract business: “No Lines; No Waiting!” Instead of cleverly marketing oil change services such efforts could market God’s services. If our churches did so, perhaps that message would magically pull in the crowds like never before. What do you think of this idea? God thinks, “Yes, but…” about such an idea. On the one hand, there are no lines when you want to speak to God. He will never respond to you with a pre-recorded message that advises you, “The line to speak to God is long right now; the Lord will get to you later at His convenience and when He is able to do so. Sorry.” Oh, no, God’s capabilities are far greater. He sincerely invites, “Call upon me in the day of trouble, I will deliver you, and you will glorify me.” (Psalm 50) When it comes to God, be assured there are no lines you must endure to speak with Him. He is always available. He will immediately take your call. However (and here comes the “but”), God does not make the ironclad promise “No waiting.” Waiting, in fact, is a very important and very frequent part of our relationship with God. It is often the way He addresses our inquiries. He welcomes our conversations, to be sure. He listens, and compassionately so. However, He responds to our inquiries as He deems best for us, and sometimes this involves waiting on our part. This waiting is not a form of punishment God inflicts upon us. This waiting is not an indication of God’s laxity or incompetence in caring for us. Instead, waiting is one of the tools God lovingly employs to further strengthen our trust in Him. As such, with our Lord it is a matter of “No lines, and inspired, confident waiting.” The psalmist attests, “I wait for the Lord, my soul waits, and in His Word, I put my hope…for with the Lord is unfailing love.” (Psalm 100) The prophet testifies, “Blessed are all who wait for Him.” (Isaiah 30) Our gracious Lord promises, “I will never forsake you.” (Hebrews 13) And as we so wait upon Him, we trust, rejoice, serve, and share the news, “No lines, and inspired and confident waiting in Him.” (Rev. Jan Case is a retired Slidell Lutheran Minister and can be contacted at [email protected])Waiting and trustingBy JAN CASERetired Lutheran Slidell Minister To submit an article to the Slidell Inspiration page, e-mail [email protected] SHERYL HILKER BOLDT Guest ColumnistAre we constantly in a state of hatred? It ain’t never gonna happenIn this crazy world we’re living in, those of us who are Bible believers are scratching our heads wondering what is going on. People in several of our cities are now protesting law enforcement arresting criminals, threatening law enforcement, attacking law enforcement with force, and who knows what else. Law enforcement is here to protect us citizens but these protesters are fighting against the protection. Facts have changed. A lot has changed in our nation and our world in the last hundred years. It used to be that we knew the difference between facts and truth. Most people did not rely only on what they were witnessing but searched for the truth. There is such a thing as “facts” but “facts” aren’t always the truth. Our mainstream media has been overtaken by the Deep State who wants to overthrow our Constitutional Republic form of government and install a socialist, communist form of a One World Government ruled by a few people who think they are better than the common people of the world. They even think they should reduce the population of the world, which would include all the believers in Jesus, of course. Their “facts” are definitely not the truth. Their facts have changed. I choose to search for the truth in any situation or conversation. According to John 14:6, Jesus said, “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” John 16:13 says, “The Spirit of Truth will guide you into all truth.” 1 John 5:6b says, “And it is the Spirit that bears witness, because the Spirit is truth.” In John 8:32 it reads, “And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.” In John 17:17, speaking to His Father God, Jesus says, “Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy Word is truth.” To make it simple to understand, if we want to know what the truth of any situation or “fact” is, we must go to the Bible, the Word of God, and search for the truth. There are only two answers: the truth or a lie. Just as there are only two answers, there are only two choices that we can make: right or wrong, good or evil, life or death. God showed us in Deut. 28 what the results of our choices are: blessing or cursing. Jesus came to show us the truth of God’s Word. God’s Word is “life to those who find it and health to all their flesh.” Prov. 4:22. Only Truth remains. (Peggy R. Bogue Falaya Bank BiteWith the recent rains pushing the Bogue Falaya River higher than it had been before the latest fronts moved through, conditions have been a little tougher for bank anglers in Covington. Even so, Kevin Callahan still managed a good mess of bream during a recent morning trip to Bogue Falaya Park. “I haven’t been fishing in a while, but had a great morning at the Bogue Falaya Park in Covington,” Callahan said. Fishing from the bank near the entrance of the park, Callahan used a simple setup with red worms under a cork and stayed on fish throughout the morning. “The swinging bench in the middle is where I fish,” he said. “I kill them the majority of the time fishing with red worms from Walmart.” Callahan said he used 10-pound test line with a swivel and no added weight while keeping the cork set about two feet above the bait. The trip nearly became even more memorable when he hooked what he believes was a striped bass. “I fought him for 10 minutes,” Callahan said. “I just couldn’t get him out of the water.” While red worms continue producing steady bream action along the river, Callahan said anglers looking to target bass around the park may want to bring along live shiners as water temperatures continue warming deeper into spring. Trestles Trout Cleve Carpenter of Covington and his friend Luke made an early morning run to the Trestles this week hoping to take advantage of the morning tide around the bridge. Before heading out, the pair stopped at The Pointe to pick up live shrimp, then set up about a quarter mile down from the drawbridge. Carpenter said they fished drop shot rigs roughly 20 to 30 yards off the bridge while keeping a very slow retrieve about 10 feet down. “I found them at the Trestles between 6 and 9 this morning,” Carpenter said. The trout cooperated through most of the moving tide, and the two anglers managed close to two limits before things changed quickly. “The tide reversed and that was it,” Carpenter said. “It was a mass exodus after the tide turned.” The team ended the day with close to a 2-man limit of trout with a big croaker and flounder in the mix. Lock #3 Perch Jerkin’ Eddie Smith of Bush recently made an evening trip with his son to the Pearl River Navigational Canal at Lock #3. Smith said the recent rains has had an effect on the water in the canal. “The water was a bit muddier than normal, and the current was moving pretty good,” Smith said. Fishing worms under corks with small No. 6 hooks set about 12 to 15 inches deep, the pair picked away at bream along the bank throughout the evening. Smith said most of their fish came from behind structure where the water slowed down out of the main current. Even with the stained water, the action stayed steady enough to keep things interesting, and Smith’s son even added a nice catfish to the box. Kayak Launches Planned Construction continues on the new Lacombe Nature Park project, where kayak launch access is expected to become one of the biggest attractions for local fishermen once completed. The roughly 25-acre outdoor recreation area is being developed along Bayou Lacombe between the existing Bayou Lacombe Boat Launch and the Tammany Trace trailhead. Plans for the project include kayak launches, boardwalks and additional waterfront access that could eventually give kayak anglers another convenient spot to launch and explore Bayou Lacombe and nearby marsh areas. Parish officials say construction on the project is ongoing Tournament ResultsFPBA held its latest tournament at Bayou Liberty with seven boats competing. Fishing proved tough for most of the field, with anglers either catching numbers of small fish or only a handful of quality bites. Kyle Hills claimed the win with a five-fish limit weighing 11.39 pounds. His catch also included the tournament’s big bass, a 4.97-pounder. Hills reported getting just five keeper bites all day, but they were the right ones. John Seghers finished second with five fish totaling 10.47 pounds, anchored by a 4.62-pound bass. Darren Welch and Darrick Neale took the final money spot with a five-fish limit weighing 7.36 pounds.
