1 1.0 INTRODUCTION The University of Malaya's Central Library opened its doors in 1959 in a four-story building with a 17372 square meter floor area. This library was a part of a network and was able to use a discipline-based strategy to offer comprehensive services and facilities. While the second level was for the Theses and Dissertations Collection, Pendeta Discovery terminals, and study space, the ground floor included service counters, a self-charging machine, reference desks, free range readings, and satellite TV (Astro). Bound journals and the reference area are located on the third floor, whereas the Media Collection and bound journals were located on the last floor. The collection was developed in accordance with the university's needs for teaching, learning, and research. There are 73 online databases, 254383 digital collection (without PQPT), 486452 non-printed materials (total copies), and 876060 printed materials (total titles). In addition, there are 91 classes in the Central Library and 96 at the Branch Libraries, with 1987 students registered. Additionally, they have 1188 articles and 565 books for internal users, while 144 articles and 75 books are provided for external users. The library is a vital institution in a society that is constantly evolving, and it must adapt to meet those requirements. The appearance of modern libraries has altered because of information technology. Libraries have developed into information sources rather than just storage for documents. The transformation from material to digital libraries needs more than just technological advancement. It also calls for a transformation in the way that users interact with and access knowledge. The essential function of the library is also changed by the transformation from a traditional to an academic database. Additionally, libraries provide people with employment opportunities with the highest working conditions and salaries. Because of this, libraries are advantageous to both users and staff. We cannot abandon libraries in the era of digital technology. There will never be a replacement for the authenticity and dependability that one gets from a library. 2 2.0 CORPORATE INFORMATION An organization should be required to establish its Objective, Vision, and Mission. It serves this function to implement a strategic plan in order to accomplish organizational objectives and goals. 5 4.0 DEPARTMENTS AND SERVICES 4.1 Departments i. Acquisition Division It is the division's responsibility to purchase library items like printed books, electronic books (eBooks), non-book materials, and local and foreign newspapers. The division completed the acquisitions through purchases, subscriptions, gifts, and exchange agreements with other information management or libraries. The division is mostly done through regional organizations or directly from publishers to buy and subscribe to the materials. ii. Cataloguing and Metadata Division The division organized, described, and supplied the efficient and precise tools so that students and their staffs could access the academic materials to serve the UM community. It will make it easier for the teachers and students to find the information resources they require. The division is in charge of creating and maintaining the UM Library Catalogue as well as formulating and enforcing rules and guidelines for the generation and upkeep of metadata that describes the collection. By giving users the most recent information, they required, they must satisfy their needs as users. The division offered a wide range of services, including the transaction of library materials, interlibrary loans and document delivery, registration of library users, information desk services, and services for locating lost library materials. iv. Academic Services Division The division's goal is to support library and university research initiatives. the department in charge of compiling reports, including those with statistics on library resources. Every month, they compile a report based on information from Web of Science and Scopus publications at universities. v. Information Skills Division For students and staff, the division offered information literacy and user education seminars. They are dedicated to making sure that information skills training is provided for users of all ability levels.


6 vi. Information Systems Division The division oversees making sure the computer system in the Library Network is completely functional. Additionally, they offer high-quality ICT services. vii. Conservation & Preservation Division The division is in charge of looking after and maintaining the library's collection. They will shield the collection from harm, increase its useful life, or fix any that has already occurred. The procedures to prevent damage are binding serials and paperbacks into hard covers for the first time, rebinding, deacidification, restoration of materials in the general collections, and thorough treatment of rare and special collection materials. 4.2 Services i. Borrowing and Returning Library Materials Users were able to borrow materials from the UM Library. The users' borrowed materials will be located. Borrowing Kindle The UM Library also enabled users to borrow the kindle. A small hand-held electronic gadget called a Kindle is used for reading books. iii. Reference Service The UM Library provides reference desks for users. Users can ask the librarian at the reference desks for help with their materials. iv. Membership Registration Students will be automatically registered as library members at UM Library. External users must apply for membership. External users of the application will be charged. v. Interlibrary Loan & Document Supply Service When your required materials are unavailable in the UM Library, you will be charged if you want to borrow books or obtain papers from another library.

Services and Facilities for Special Disable Users For special disabled users (SDU), the UM Library offers a number of services and facilities to ensure that they can use the library's resources. The UM Library offers a variety of amenities and services, including Collection, Reserved Carrel, Braille Lift, Computer Lab S, Track and Ramp, Accessible Toilet, Special Parking, and Volunteer Reader. vii. Library Visit The UM Library welcomes library tours as well as high school visits. The tours and visits are only accessible on weekends for 45 minutes to an hour. In order to ensure discipline, chaperons will be with the pupils at all times. viii. User Education Program The UM Library offers users a variety of guided sessions so they can identify their materials and develop their research-related abilities. Users at computer labs will receive weekly step-by-step instructions to guarantee better understanding. The Spectrum library's online instructions are also available to users for download. ix. Discussion Room Reservation The UM Library can also reserve the discussion room for users. Users will be able to talk with other members about their works.


8 5.0 COLLECTIONS/RESOURCES General Collection is the open stack collection consists of textbooks and monographs of various subjects acquired to support learning, teaching and research needs of the University. All academic staff, students and valid registered members of the library are allowed to borrow from this collection. Next, Academic Reserve Collection consists of text book, suggested by lecturer for their students. Furthermore, reference sources such as dictionaries, encyclopedias, handbooks, directories and resource guides to research are available. The Universiti Malaya Library is offering its users the opportunity to sample this increasingly popular technology. UM Library Kindles are preloaded with Bestsellers, Popular, Motivational and Inspirational titles and more. Current library students and staff are eligible to borrow a Kindle for two weeks. Besides that, is Microfiche and Microfilm. This collection contains articles, books, research syntheses, conference papers and technical reports, newspapers in microfiche & microfilm format. The collection available at the Central Library. The collection consists of theses and dissertations of postgraduate students of the Universiti Malaya and also selected titles from the National University of Singapore. This is a closed access collection. In addition is Free Range Reading Collection. This collection contains popular fiction and non-fiction books to browse and borrow. Light novels and reading collection such as motivational, biography, poetry collections, young adult fiction, humor, popular science writing, and much more written in English or Malay language. Last but not least, The Universiti Malaya Library has a collection of media to support research and teaching and learning. Among the collections in the media unit are VHs, CDs, black plates, and blue-rays. There is a collection that can only be used in the library using the equipment provided. 9 6.0 PROFESSIONS / STAFFING The University of Malaya, which has its headquarters in Kuala Lumpur, was founded in 1949. They are the oldest university and employ more than 2,500 people. The Chief Librarian oversees the library, which also has a full complement of technical, support, and professional employees. They provide classes in education, engineering, the social sciences, and more. The librarian and staff are also present. The staffing that we choose is Mahbob Yusof. He is Senior Deputy Chief Librarian at University of Malaya. He has Diploma in Information Library and Science in UiTM. Mahbob Yusof also handles several aspects namely Cooperate, Finance, Human Resources and Training their staff. Mahbob Yusof's duty as senior deputy chief librarian entails planning for managing and overseeing the complete network of libraries, as well as for laws and regulations. 10 7.0 ROLES/RESPONSIBILITIES This library's responsibility to students and faculty are to fulfill their information, research, and educational requirements. A Central Library serves as the campus's main library and buildings the rest of the UM Library. There are now more over a million current volumes in the UM Library's collection. The material available in this library can be used for research by both faculty and students due to this. This library's collection includes theses, dissertations, audiovisual materials, conference proceedings, books, periodicals, and microforms. To support its users in fulfilling their assessments, UM Library also provides access to electronic resources such e-journals, databases, citation indexes, and bibliographic management software. Next, the UM Library responsible with offering users’ active information services or professional consultations that seem to go above and beyond what is typically provided. The library already offers qualified knowledge, a variety of information sources, and knowledgebased services to improve its high-quality research, teaching, and learning. With the assistance of the professional, users also may improve their work. After that, the UM library also responsibility of offering users comfortable and appropriate study spaces. Students will be able to study more effectively as a result of this, and they won't need to borrow books from the library in order to read there. For users who want to have a private discussion for their study group or gathering, the library offers discussion rooms. In addition, the UM Library offers a single, disabled carrel for students who like to study quietly. This helps the user study more effectively. Every floor of the UM Library has a reading room that is accessible. Lastly, the UM Library also responsible for giving them access to user-level reference materials. This will make it easier for them to find the particular information they need for their research or academic work. To fulfill the specific requirements of the various faculties, there is also a network of branch and special libraries. The Chief Librarian is in charge of the library, which also has a full complement of technical, support, and professional employees. The main goal of the UM library is to keep up its services and infrastructure so that it can continue to meet the reading-material requirements of its diverse user base.


11 8.0 TARGET USER As we know Central Library is the main library at Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur. The Central Library is set up to assist students and faculty in learning, and research needs the teaching, learning, and research needs of faculty members and students in higher education institutions. To complement the educational environment, academic libraries offer a variety of information services. Accordingly, in the Central Library. Students who study there are the main category of target users. For instance, the library provides various services to enhance students’ educational experience, such as a physical location where students can find various materials like books, dictionaries, and encyclopedias as well as a space where they can decompress and relax while reading or listening to music. Other than that, there is also an ICT support section for students where they can use the computer for their study, and it is for students who do not have a computer or laptop. There are many resources that students can find for doing the assignments. International publications are available for the students to read, independent study spaces, as well as group workplaces where they may meet up with other students to work on group projects. Furthermore, the next target user is the lecturers who teach there. They can do their class with the students in the library. Especially when the lecturer wants the students to do the test. It is suitable because the library is so restful. Not only that, but the lecturers can also find resources for creating interactive modules and online learning materials for students to gain a lot of knowledge. Lastly, a third of the target user is the visitor and children because there are provided free zone. There are three sections for visitors which are the tv area, the children’s corner, and the gadget floor. It can make the visitor interested in coming to the library because there are many services.


12 9.0 FACILITIES This library has several facilities for its patrons, ensuring their comfort while utilizing the space. 39 carrel rooms are one of the facilities offered at this library for postgraduate students, academic staff, and researchers. For pupils who are blind or visually challenged, there are 21 carrel rooms provided for them. These carrel rooms will provide their users with some privacy in the library so they may concentrate on their work without being distracted by other patrons. During the library's operating hours, a locker is accessible. The user will be able to concentrate better on their task and stop worrying about belongings thanks to this. Next, this library has a wireless Internet connection, or WIFI. Users who bring a laptop or other devices that can connect to the Wi-Fi signal can access the signal. Students can access the Wi-Fi network by using their registered UM email address and password. For guests, the information desk is where they may obtain the temporary password. This library also provides two Self Charging Machine. The student can charge their book on their own. They must keep the receipt for reference. After that, students can utilize the reading areas of this library to complete their assignments. There are reading rooms on every floor of the library. The librarian gave the students the advice to leave library books on the carts after use and not try to shelve old books. It's because incorrectly shelved goods will make retrieving extremely difficult. Additionally, this library features a self-returning book kiosk that is open 24/7. With this option, users may return books whenever they choose, and their records will be updated instantly. Finally, a discussion room is offered by this library. These services allow any member who want to host a private conversation to do so by reserving a discussion room for a maximum of two hours. There are discussion rooms on the second, third, and fourth levels. Users can complete a reservation at the Level 1 service counter starting a day before the scheduled use. Only library members who are registered may use the discussion room. The users can obtain the key from the service counter on the day of use. This library also provides photocopying service for user. The photocopy services operating by commercial suppliers. Both staff-operated and self-service photocopying options are available. The library advises patrons that the current copyright legislation in Malaysia regarding photocopies of reading materials must be observed. ([email protected]., Universiti Malaya library, n.d.)


13 10.0 CONCLUSION While doing the assignment, we realized that we had gotten a lot of knowledge about the Information Agencies Organization. It also teaches us that cooperation and commitment are very important things for us to finish this assignment. This assignment helps us to improve our skills in searching for information. In addition, Perpustakaan Universiti Malaya accomplishes a variety of functions for users, especially students, for their interests. The library also offers a wide range of services including internet access, automation sections, study spaces and another service. Not only do students benefit from libraries but also academics. Librarians and lecturers can collaborate to develop interesting programs, modify curricula, and organize learning activities. Furthermore, there is a calmness that helps the students focus and study, so the students are set up for success. Throughout life, libraries serve a very important function. They are important in encouraging the advancement of knowledge. The treasure trove of knowledge is found in libraries. Finally, libraries are vitally important, especially for students.
