Introduction

Malaysia is the home for five of Asia’s most elaborate cultures. For example Malay,
Chinese, Indian , Sabah and Sarawak cultures. Most of the world’s major religions, all
coexisting together in harmony. Malaysia’s diversity traces its roots way back to the
glorious era of the Malacca Sultanate in the 1400s, and the colonization under the british

in the 1800s.

Chinese
Temple

● Chinese temple architecture refer to a type of structures used as place of worship of Chinese Buddhism, Taoism
or Chinese folk religion, where people revere ethnic Chinese gods and ancestors.

● 宫 “Gōng” palaces, larger buildings used as imperial residences, temples, or centers for cultural activities.

● Chinese temples, be they Buddhist, Daoist or Confucian, share the same design features, and are built to the
same principles as palaces and wealthy traditional Chinese homes – laid out on a central north–south axis, with
entrances facing the auspicious south and protected by a spirit wall.

● Walled compounds, raised pavilions, wooden columns and panelling, yellow glazed roof tiles, landscaped
gardens, and a careful application of town planning and use of space are all notable features of the
architecture of ancient China, with many of them still playing an important part in modern architecture.

● Buddhist temples include a temple, pagoda and grotto, which are called Si, Ta, and Shiku in Chinese
respectively. Taoist architecture is variously called Gong, Guan or An in Chinese.

● As the center of the Potala Palace, the red palace is the soul of the architecture complex. Red is the symbol
of bravery. Nowadays, people paint red on the temple walls in deference to ancient people painting red on
the tombs. Red is the color of blood.The color blue symbolized heaven and heavenly blessings with the best
example being the deep cobalt tiles adorning the rooftops of structures at the Temple of Heaven.

Thean Hou Temple

The Thean Hou Temple is a six-tiered temple of the Chinese sea
goddess Mazu located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. It is located
on 1.67 acres of land atop Robson Heights on Lorong Bellamy,
overlooking Jalan Syed Putra.

Kek Lok Si Temple

The Kek Lok Si Temple is a Buddhist temple situated in Air
Itam, Penang, Malaysia. It is the largest Buddhist temple in
Malaysia, and is also an important pilgrimage centre for
Buddhists from Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore
and other countries in Southeast Asia.

Cheng Hoon Teng Temple

The Cheng Hoon Teng Temple is a Chinese temple
practising the Three Doctrinal Systems of Buddhism,
Confucianism and Taoism located at Malacca. It is the
oldest functioning temple in the country.

Leong San Tong Khoo Kongsi

The Khoo Kongsi is a large Chinese clan house with elaborate and
highly ornamented architecture, a mark of the dominant presence of
the Chinese in Penang, Malaysia. The famous Khoo Kongsi is the
grandest clan temple in the country. It is also one of the city's major
historic attractions.

Snake Temple

The Snake Temple is a Chinese temple situated in Bayan Lepas,
Southwest Penang Island District, Penang, Malaysia.It was built for
Master Qingshui or Chor Soo Kong, a deified Buddhist monk.

Mosque

● Mosque a building which Muslims worship God. Throughout the Islamic history, mosque
was the centre of the community and towns formed around this pivotal building.

● Architecturally, it often features a minaret, or onion-shaped dome, on top.

● This building is very important religiously and politically, and can be a modest
structure or an architectural masterpiece, such as the Great Mosque of Córdoba in
Spain.

● Muslims, or practitioners of Islam, come together here and pray in rows facing in the
direction of the holy city of Mecca.

Putra Mosque,Putrajaya

● Putra Mosque is the principal mosque of Putrajaya,
Malaysia. It is located next to Perdana Putra, which
houses the Malaysian Prime Minister's office and man
made Putrajaya Lake.

● Putra Mosque was crafted with unique and rose-tinted

granite . Inside of the mosque there is an elegant and

beautiful prayer hall, the Sahn courtyard, and various

learning facilities.

● The building of this mosque Its 380 feet and 116 meter tall minaret which is one of the

tallest in the region. The design of the Sheikh Omar Mosque in Baghdad, structure a

beautiful marriage between traditional Malay and Middle Eastern architectural styles.

Crystal Mosque,Kuala Terengganu

● The Crystal Mosque or Masjid Kristal is a mosque in Wan Man, from
Terengganu, Malaysia. A grand structure made of steel, glass and
crystal.

● the mosque is located at the Islamic Heritage Park on the island of
Wan Man it was constructed between 2006 and 2008, and was
officially inaugurated on 8 February 2008 by the 13th Yang di-Pertuan
Agong,

● The Crystal Mosque is cover an area of 2,146 square meters. It is coated with steel, glass and crystal
which are the three main materials in the development of this magnificent piece of the architecture. Inside
of the mosque it look like the glass domes are shining.

Masjid Lapan Kubah,Terengganu

● Situated in Kampung Lapan Kotak, a village in Besut, Terengganu, it's
easy to be enchanted by the bright colourful domes of Masjid Lapan
Kubah. Also known as Masjid Russia due to the architectural
resemblance to St. Basil's Cathedral in Russia, it was built to replace
an old wooden century-old mosque that once stood on the same site.

● The Lapan Kubah also known as “The Russian Mosque” a
colourful architecture that attracted the attention of the public.

● Its architecture and colours were inspired by St. Basil’s Cathedral in Moscow, hence, this mosque is known
locally as Masjid Russia.This iconic mosque was the brainchild of Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, Besut Member of
Parliament .

Masjid Kampung Laut,Kelantan

● The building material of this mosque consists of hard and
solid wood that can last for many years.

● The architecture and the carvings found in the construction

of the Kampung Laut Mosque it shows the skills and wisdom
of Malay craftsmen who combine traditional art with superior
Islamic art.
● The Kampung Lautian Mosque is a mosque located in the southern part of Kota Bharu, the capital of
Kelantan, Malaysia, off Federal Highway 8, Ninampuri.

● It is considered one of the oldest mosques in Malaysia, It was originally built with a three-storey roof made of
four pillars supported by leaves from the Sokolang tree, but was later expanded to 20 pillars and the leafy
roof was replaced with tiles, and was relocated from Kampung Lautian to its present location after flooding in
1966-67.

Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Mosque, Shah Alam

● The design of Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah Mosque is a combination
of Malay and Modernist style. The Arabic calligraphy showed the inner curve
of the dome and parts of the walls. The work was executed by the Egyptian
calligrapher Shiekh Abdel Moneim Mohamed Ali El Sharkawi.

● The main dome of the mosque measures 51.2 m
(167 ft) in diameter and 106.7 m (350 ft) in height
from the ground level. It is constructed primarily
from aluminium. The minarets are placed at each
of the four corners and are 142.3 m (460 ft) tall.

Hindu
Temple

● Hindu temple was designed to bring human beings and gods together, using symbolism to express the ideas and
beliefs of Hinduism.

● The temple incorporates all elements of the Hindu to presenting the good, the evil and the human, as well as the
elements of the Hindu sense of cyclic time and the essence of life to symbolically presenting dharma, kama,
artha, moksa, and karma.

● The building process recite ancient rituals, geometric symbolisms, and reflect beliefs and values innate within
various schools of Hinduism.

● Hindu temples come in many styles, are situated in diverse locations, deploy different construction methods and
are adapted to different deities and regional beliefs

Sri Poyatha Moorthi Temple, Melaka

● Sri Poyyatha Vinayagar Moorthi Temple the oldest
Hindu Temple in Malaysia. The temple is 230 years
old.

● The building shows a rectangular land where it
stands was donated by Kapitan Thaivanayagam
Chitty, the head of the community

● It was built for the Hindu population of the area to practice their religion,
especially the veneration of Lord Vinayagar also known as Lord Ganesha a deity
with the head of an elephant, body of a man, and four arms.

Waterfall Temple, Penang

● Elaborate white marble columns hold up a ceiling decorated with
colourful round centrepieces. The floor is of light brown marble
with black square inlays.

● On each side of the main door way stands giant temple
guard statues, each more than ten feet tall.

Sri Mahamariamman Temple, Kuala Lumpur

● The Sri Mahamariamman Temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Kuala
Lumpur, Malaysia. It was founded in 1873, it is situated at the edge of
Chinatown in Jalan Bandar . In 1968, a new structure was built, featuring
the ornate 'Raja Gopuram' tower in the style of South Indian temples.

● Built in the South Indian style, the temple's most amazing feature is the
impressive 5 tiered gopuram tower . It is the tallest structure in the temple.

● The 22.9 m (75 ft) high pyramid-shaped gate tower is decorated with
depictions of Hindu gods sculpted by artisans from southern India.

Tebrau Glass●Temple, Johor Bahru

● The Arulmigu Sri Rajakaliamman Glass Temple is a Hindu temple
in Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. The temple was listed in the
Malaysian Book of Records as the first and only glass temple in
the nation on 12 May 2010

● Nearly the whole temple is embellished with an array of about
30,000 pieces of glass of various shades and colors.

● The colors range from blue, to green, red, yellow, purple or any other
color that you can think of is found here because the mixture of colors
will always create new colors. This makes the temple to be truly
colorful.

Sri Shakti Devasthanam Temple,Kuala Selangor

● The royal entrance tower that stands 74 feet tall.
Dedicated to the goddess Sakthi Maari Amman, this
monument is the only place with all 51 forms of goddess
Shakti carved along the temple’s internal corridor.

● The main entrance of the temple has a sculptured
granite frame that is said to weigh as much as 4 tonnes
and is 18 feet tall.

Church

● A church building or church house is a building used for Christian worship services and
other Christian religious activities. The earliest identified Christian church is a house church
founded between 233 and 256. From the 11th through the 14th centuries there was a wave of
church construction in western Europe.

● In traditional Christian architecture, the plan view of a church often forms a Christian cross;
the center aisle and seating representing the vertical beam with the bema and altar forming
the horizontal. Towers or domes may inspire contemplation of the heavens. Modern
churches have a variety of architectural styles and layouts. Some buildings designed for
other purposes have been converted to churches, while many original church buildings have
been put to other uses.

Christ Church, Melaka

● Christ Church Malacca is an 18th-century Anglican church in the city of Malacca City, Malaysia. It is the oldest
functioning Protestant church in Malaysia.

● The church is built in Dutch Colonial architecture style and is laid out in a simple rectangle of 25 m by 13 m.

● The ceiling rises to 12 m and is spanned by wooden beams, each carved
from a single tree. The roof is covered with Dutch tiles and the walls were
raised using Dutch bricks built on local laterite blocks then coated with
Chinese plaster.

● The floors of the church are paved with granite blocks originally used as
ballast for merchant ships.

St Francis Xavier Church, Melaka

● The church is a twin-spired neo-gothic structure. It is believed that the
church was modeled after the Cathedral of St. Peter in Montpellier,
Southern France.

● The Church of St. Francis Xavier is a church in Malacca City, Malacca,
Malaysia.

● The church was built in 1849 on the site of an old Portuguese church.

St.Mary Cathedral ,Kuala Lumpur

● The building consists of a nave 87 feet long by 28 feet wide, and a
chancel 29 feet long by 22 feet wide with an octagonal end, together with
a vestry and organ chamber.

● The Cathedral of St. Mary the Virgin or St. Mary's Cathedral is the
cathedral of the Diocese of West Malaysia of the Anglican Church of the
Province of South East Asia, located in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

St. George’s Church, Penang

● St. George's Church is a 19th-century Anglican church in the city of
George Town in Penang, Malaysia. It is the oldest purpose built
Anglican church in Southeast Asia.

● The church is built with a combination of Neo-Classical , Georgian and
English Palladian architecture styles. Built entirely by Indian convict
labour, it was built of brick on a solid plastered stone base.

● The Church features a portico of Doric columns. The original roof was
flat but was converted to a gable in 1864 as the original flat roof was
found to be unsuitable in the tropical climate. The apex of the roof is
topped by an octagonal shaped steeple.

St. Michael's and All Angels Church, Sandakan

● St. Michael's and All Angels Church or for short St. Michael is an Anglican church in the Malaysian city of
Sandakan in the state of Sabah in northern Borneo. St. Michael is the oldest stone church in Sabah.

● The church was initially made of Belian planks, followed by a
stack of bricks and stones.

● It is said that the windows of the church near Samson Avenue
were decorated with white stones sent by ocean from Hong Kong.

Church of the Holy Rosary,kuala Lumpur

● The church is built in the Gothic style, which is characterized by pointed arches, ribbed vaults and flying arches,
giving the building a sharp, lean and cold appearance.

● This is an ancient architectural style often found in Europe.It was mapped and built by a French missionary named
Francis Emile Terrien, with the assistance of Father Lambert.

● The church, with no steeple and no wings, was completed after eighteen months.
The architecture was semi-gothic with flying buttress arches but the roof was flat.
The parsonage was an attap building behind the church.. She was blessed by the
then new bishop Monsignor Emile Barillon MEP. Her title: Church of Our Lady of the
Rosary.

Conclusion

Because Malaysia have a deep and diverse history since 1400s ,
Most of the religious buildings influenced by many cultures and

this makes all them to coexist and tolerate each other.
