2019 Annual Report
Sally J. Altman, Board President
Message from the
President, Board of
Directors of Crown Center
In Crown Center, the dining room tables are bare.
The library is locked. The benches in the lobby
have been removed and the halls are silent.
This is Crown Center as I never imagined it.
We offer programming every day throughout the
day. We greet our residents with warm hellos.
We offer opportunities to learn and volunteer.
We encourage residents to gather and socialize.
But today, and for the past few months, our
residents are socially-distanced. However,
they are not socially-isolated. They receive
meals delivered to their doors. Jigsaw puzzles
are left at the doors of known enthusiasts.
They get surprise baskets with snacks and
games. Staff members and volunteers check
in by telephone and with cards and letters.
This is the Crown Center I’ve always loved.
Our staff members and volunteers rise to every
challenge, responding with creativity and flexibility.
Their highest priority is the dignity and well-being
of our residents. We continue to encourage our
residents and staff to wear masks and to stay
physically distanced while much of St. Louis
County is opening up. We understand that older
adults are especially vulnerable to the novel virus,
so as others take risks, we will be more cautious.
No one knows what our world will look like
when we get to the other side of this pandemic.
However, I am confident that we will continue
to offer a diverse, stimulating, caring and
affordable home to older adults. I’m so lucky
to be a part of this community.
What is Humans of…?
It started with Humans of
New York, and now includes
Humans of St. Louis, Humans
of Judaism, and Humans of
USA. We have created Humans of Crown
Center to tell our story using real
people – sharing their experiences, the
friendships, interactions, and journeys
that brought them to Crown Center.
All of these people are a vital part of
our community. 224 per year

Having lived overseas for more than 10 years,
Sharon Stone found her 2015 move into
culturally diverse Crown Center a natural fit.
Others are definitely surprised to learn
that Sharon is fluent in 8 different languages
and works part time as a translator; so it’s
no surprise that she enjoys speaking with
Crown residents for whom English is a second
language. Sharon says that moving into
Crown Center brought her the comfort in her
life that she needed. Her priority was to live in
a community and not to be alone. While she
greatly appreciates Crown’s ideal location and
wide variety of programs, it is the company of
her neighbors and the caring support of social
work staff that she cherishes most.

When asked to share the first three words that
come to mind when describing her connection
with Crown Center, Sally says activity, food
and friends. It was an Oasis Better Balance
class that originally brought her to Crown;
and it’s the people in the class, an enjoyable
kosher meal and friendly people that keep her
coming back. She wants to be sure that people
know that the Crown Center programs are
open to all - even if you’re not a resident. Sally
knows and since she lives nearby, she takes
full advantage of the offerings; attending an
a capella concert or participating in a cooking
class featuring a local chef. Spending time with
friends is her favorite thing to do, and her circle
of friends has easily expanded thanks to the
Oasis/Crown connection.

As the doors open each morning at the
Circle@Crown Cafe, you’ll be greeted by
the smiling Pamela Dern, cafe volunteer
extraordinaire. If you’re a regular, she’ll know
your name. Pamela has made it her mission
to know as many people as possible. Pamela
describes volunteering at the café as “work”
she feels privileged to undertake, is passionate
about, and is excited to do every day.
Learning the life stories of café customers is
one of her favorite job perks. And when peo-
ple ask Pamela about her story, they may be
surprised to learn that this city girl was actually
raised on a horse farm. Regardless of the top-
ic, Pamela knows how to make everyone feel
special. She’s made the Circle@Crown Cafe a
place where you can not only count on a great
cup of coffee but find a caring community.

Moving to Crown Center was the obvious
choice for Bernice Johnson. Upon retirement
from a career in nursing, Bernice became
friends with other retirees who were living at
Crown Center. When it became too difficult
to maintain her house in U. City, she toured
Crown and decided to make it her new home.
Not one to sit around, Bernice jumped right in
to a meaningful volunteer role at the bustling
welcome desk. She appreciated the diversity
and friendliness of people she encountered as
she got to know her neighbors and others from
the surrounding community. Her feeling is that
Crown is well managed - residents are kept
informed, and able to feel safe. She’s so glad
she made this her new home.

Mark Rubin Board Member

Mark Rubin has, as they say, “a full plate”. With
two school age children, volunteer commitments
and a demanding career as a Vice President at
KDG, a real estate development firm, it’s hard
to believe he ever gets a chance to sleep. Yet,
he actively serves on Crown Center’s Board of
Directors and has done so for the past 6 years.
In fact, he describes his Board experience as
invigorating, collaborative and fun. Mark is
spearheading Crown’s upcoming major con-
struction project, so Crown Center gets a lot
of his attention. Why has he made this tremen-
dous investment in Crown Center? He says it’s
because Crown is “the real deal”– a well-run
agency in business to benefit residents and
community seniors. Being on the board gives
him a sense of accomplishment and he likes
working with such a devoted team of staff and
volunteers. Mark recognizes Crown is worthy
of his time, energy and resources, and he’s the
“real deal” when it comes to giving of himself.
