Kenya is a
diverse
country with a
wide range of
landscapes
and climates

Kenya physical features

• Its terrain rises from a low coastal plain on the Indian
Ocean to mountains and plateaus (areas of level
high ground) at its centre. Most Kenyans live in the
highlands, where Nairobi, the capital, sits at an
altitude of 1,700 metres.

• Within this basic framework, Kenya is divided into the
following geographic regions: the Lake Victoria basin,
the Rift Valley and associated highlands, the
eastern plateau forelands, the semiarid and arid
areas of the north and south, and the coast.

Kenyas climate zone

• Kenya is an African country,
bisected by the Equator, yet it has
three types of climate: hot and
humid along the coast (zone 1 on
the map), temperate in the west and
south-west, where there are
mountains and plateaus (zone 2 on
the map), and finally, hot and dry in
the north and east (zone 3 on the
map).

how was the great rift
valley formed

• Geologists know that the Rift
Valley was formed by violent subterranean
forces that tore apart the earth's crust. These
forces caused huge chunks of the crust to sink
between parallel fault lines and force up molten
rock in volcanic eruptions.

why did the great rift
valley occur

• It was formed by the Thingvellir rift,
where the North American and
Eurasian tectonic plates are tearing,
or rifting, apart over a hotspot on the
island of Iceland. A rift valley is a
lowland region that forms where
Earth's tectonic plates move apart,
or rift.

Kenyan’s traditional homes

.

What doe’s Kenyan’s • People in big cities like Nairobi live in
house look like modern houses or apartments made of
stone or cement. In more remote areas
of Kenya, people live in homes made of
thatch and dried mud with no modern
conveniences. There are many tribes of
people that live simply like their ancestors
once did.

what does Kenya homes made out of?

• About 15 percent of new homes are now built with mud bricks, compared to less
than 1 percent in 2010, according to Aidah Munano, a senior official at
the Kenyan ministry of land, housing and urban development. ... They also cost
about half as much as bricks made from stone quarrying, he added
