FOREWORD

The mission in Malaya was founded in 1852. It is the first
mission on foreign soil after the founding of the Institute in France
almost two hundred years earlier in1662. The IJ Sisters were one of
the pioneers in formal and non-formal education in Malaya. The first
IJ Convent School as well as the Orphanage was established in Light
Street Penang.

In October 1860, Mother Mathilde, Mother Appolinaire and
Sister Gregory Connolly started a school in an attap house on this
site. From this humble beginning the Convent of the Holy Infant
Jesus Malacca grew and the legacy of providing holistic and quality
education continues.

The formation of CIJ Heritage Trail is the brain child of the
school’s Parent-Teacher Association led by Mr. Daniel Ang Yam Seng
and initiated by Mr. Wilson Wee Kam Poh, head of the CIJ(1)
Heritage Team. It was designed to educate and expose the
community and CIJ (1) students with the history of the school. It also
helps the future generation to instill a sense of appreciation towards
the founder of the school.
