When living things reproduce, the young will inherit some characteristics or traits of their
parents. These traits are passed on through structures called genes found in the nuclei of cells.

The traits that are passed on from the parents to the young vary. Some are more obvious than
others, some are unique and some can be affected by the environmental factors.

3. Alisha prepared two cell specimens X and Y, from a flowering plant. The diagram below
shows the parts of the plant where the specimens were obtained.

part from which cell
specimen X was obtained

part from which cell
specimen Y was obtained

The diagram below shows three different types of cells P, Q and R.

(a) Alisha claimed that cell P was obtained from specimen Y. Do you agree with her?

Give a reason for your answer. [1]

(b) Which cell, P, Q or R would Alisha be observing under the microscope when she

looked at the specimen X? Explain your answer [1]

Alisha then soaked each cell, P, Q and R in a beaker of water for 5 hours. At the end of
the 5 hours, she observed that only one of the cells became swollen and burst while the
rest did not burst.

(c) Which cell would swell and burst after being soaked for 5 hours? Give a reason for

your answer. [1]
