Retelling a Story
Sing the nursery rhyme “Mary had a Little Lamb”

Mary had a little lamb
Little lamb, little lamb
Mary had a little lamb
Its fleece was white as snow
And everywhere that Mary went
Mary went, Mary went
Everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go

He followed her to school one day
School one day, school one day

He followed her to school one day
Which was against the rule

It made the children laugh and play
Laugh and play, laugh and play

It made the children laugh and play
To see a lamb at school

And so the teacher turned him out
Turned him out, turned him out

And so the teacher turned him out
But still he lingered near
And waited patiently
Patiently, patiently
And wai-aited patiently
Til Mary did appear

Mary had a little lamb
Little lamb, little lamb
Mary had a little lamb
Its fleece was white as snow
And everywhere that Mary went
Mary went, Mary went
Everywhere that Mary went
The lamb was sure to go

Exercise 2: Joining the Parts

Events in a story must be in order. Readers will be confused if the events are
mixed up. This order is called a sequence. A good composition has a good
sequence of events. Just like we have a head, body and feet, a story has an
introduction, a body, and a conclusion.
The boxes below describe the parts of a story flow. Match each story part to
the story about Mary and her lamb. Write (I), (B) or (C) next to each part of
the story in the boxes given.

INTRODUCTION (I)
(Head)

classroom until class was over so
that it could follow Mary home.

DETAILS (B)
(Body)

but we were delighted to be able

to play with the lamb!

Our teacher was angry that we
